North Dakota today and tonight, a few may be strong to severe. The
main hazards will be hail up to quarter size and damaging wind
gusts up to 60 mph.
Additional thunderstorm development Thursday
afternoon near a stalled frontal boundary. Storms could pulse up
and produce hail up to 1 inch and brief gusts to 60 mph, and an
isolated funnel or landspout type tornado report is not out of
the question. In addition, brief heavy rainfall could cause some
minor ponding on roadways. Storms will lose intensity after
sunset.
Additional thunderstorm activity will be possible Friday, mainly
north of Highway 2. At this point, storms look like they will stay
sub-severe with lightning and perhaps pea sized hail the main
threats. Additional shower and thunderstorm development will
continue into the weekend and early next week. Much will depend on
how previous day`s thunderstorms play out, so stay tuned for
updates.

Arizona has been outscored 16-4 in losing the first three games of the series. Baltimore fell to a majors-worst 6-17 at home.
— Jack Flaherty earned his major league-leading eight win of the season as the St. Louis Cardinals scored five runs in the second inning to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-5. The Royals swept the two-game set for their first series win over Milwaukee since June 2015. Their two-run rally in the seventh rendered moot six dazzling innings by Brewers ace Corbin Burnes. The Giants got a great outing from a starter in beating the Reds for the third straight night. Mike Tauchman had an RBI single in the fifth for NL West-leading San Francisco.
— Alex Verdugo and J.D. Martinez hit back-to-back homers during a five-run first inning, Garrett Richards won his fourth straight decision and the Boston Red Sox beat the Toronto Blue Jays 7-3. Kiké Hernández and Christian Vázquez also went deep for the Red Sox, who are 13-6 on the road. Boston has outhomered its opponents 57-32. Toronto, which lost for only the second time in eight games, got a two-run homer from Marcus Semien. A victory would have moved the Blue Jays past Boston into first place in the AL East. Verdugo hit a two-run drive and Martinez then ended a 12-game homerless drought with an opposite-field shot as the first five batters reached safely against Ross Stripling.

Record-setting sprinter, ’68 Olympic activist Lee Evans dies
LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) — Lee Evans, the record-setting sprinter who wore a black beret in a sign of protest at the 1968 Olympics, died Wednesday. He was 74.
Evans became the first man to crack 44 seconds in the 400 meters, winning the gold medal at the Mexico City Games in 43.86. His victory came shortly after his teammates, Tommie Smith and John Carlos, were sent home from the Olympics for raising their fists on the medals stand.
In later interviews, Evans said an official warned him not do anything similar. He took a different approach, wearing a black beret to show support for the Black Panther Party and other civil rights organizations.

(AP) German Chancellor Angela Merkel says that “indirect contacts” with the Hamas militant group are necessary to defuse the situation in the Middle East. Speaking in Berlin as her foreign minister visited Israel and the West Bank on Thursday, Merkel downplayed how much Germany alone can do to help defuse the situation. Meanwhile, China says it has been “actively engaged in mediation” toward ending the ongoing violence between Israel and the Palestinians. Israel unleashed another wave of airstrikes across the Gaza Strip early Thursday, killing at least one Palestinian and wounding several. It pushed ahead despite U.S. calls to wind down the offensive against Gaza’s militant Hamas rulers, who have fired thousands of rockets at Israel.
BRUSSELS (AP) — European Union and U.S. top trade officials have a virtual meeting to cement recent advances in settling some key differences that have soured trans-Atlantic relations over the past years. Germany’s Trade Minister Peter Altmaier spoke of the scent of spring in the air when it came to relations with the Biden administration following four years of divisive relations under President Donald Trump. Over the past weeks, both sides have already hit the pause button on two of the most divisive trade disputes and hope Biden’s visit to the EU next month will further increase cooperation.
BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Union’s executive arm has signed a third vaccine contract with Pfizer and BioNTech through 2023 for an additional 1.8 billion doses of their COVID-19 shots. The European commission said the deal will allow the buying of 900 million doses of the current shots and of a serum adapted to the virus’ variants, with an option to purchase an extra 900 million shots. To avoid delivery delays, the deal with Pfizer-BioNTech stipulates that the production of doses must be based in the EU and that essential components are sourced from the region.
PARIS (AP) — A French appeals court has ruled that around 2,700 victims of a breast implant scandal are entitled to compensation. The court said that German company TUV Rheinland committed negligence by certifying them as safe. The scandal first emerged in 2010 after doctors noticed abnormally high rupture rates in women with implants produced by the French company Poly Implant Prothèse or PIP, affecting hundreds of thousands of women worldwide. Thursday’s ruling, which might not be final and could go to another higher court, was announced by France-based association PIPA, which represents victims.
BANGKOK (AP) — World shares are mixed after Japan reported strong trade data signaling a recovery in demand from the pandemic. The price of Bitcoin steadied. Stocks rose in Paris, London, Tokyo and Sydney but fell in Hong Kong, Seoul and Shanghai. U.S. futures were lower. Japan’s government reported exports rose 38% in April from a year earlier while imports climbed nearly 13%, indicating a recovery in overseas demand even as the country weathers its worst bout of coronavirus outbreaks so far. Exports to the U.S. rose 45% and those to China jumped nearly 34% in a strong rebound from the shocks of the pandemic.
