This annual event, hosted by the North Dakota National Guard, honors all deceased American servicemen and women and is free to the public. This year’s theme is “Korean War – Never Forgotten.

Participants are asked to observe COVID-19 precautions and arrive early due to anticipated large crowds and motorcycle honor run. Lawn chairs are encouraged due to limited seating and attendees are encouraged to sit with family members and friends in clusters while practicing social distancing.

Jamestown  (JRMC) – During our nation’s pandemic, one nurse put the needs of others before her own.

The nurses at Jamestown Regional Medical Center selected Jessica Linderman, registered nurse and surgery center manager, as its 2021 Nora Melvold Paulson Excellence in Leadership Award recipient.

Linderman joined the JRMC family in 2018.

JRMC Chief Nursing Officer Trisha Jungels, says, “Jess is a servant leader; she puts other people’s needs before her own and positively influences those around her. She actively contributes to the personal development and performance of her team.”

Linderman supported the hospital and the community throughout the pandemic by acting as a steward for the organization’s resources. Jungels said she planned and managed all available resources for the betterment and prosperity of the organization, employees, and patients.

Jungles says, Jess is successful in pulling people together for a common purpose. She creates a feeling of belonging to something bigger than each individual and fosters team spirit and a sense of community.  A great example of this was during the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). Jess’ leadership and relationships allowed the Surgery Center to remain safe for patients to receive care, employees to work and providers to practice.”

Linderman lives in Carrington with her husband and three children.

Jamestown (KFGO) – It was a first for the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

A trooper made a traffic stop for speeding on I-94 near Jamestown and cited a woman for going 90 in a 75 MPH zone. The woman told the officer she was driving across the country with two goats in her car and they were distracting her.

Another trooper stopped the same driver for speeding later near Casselton.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The coronavirus pandemic did not slow North Dakotans’ appetite for gambling, with more than $881 million wagered on games of chance in the state in fiscal 2020. Data shows that’s a more than 50% increase from the previous year. North Dakota gambling regulator Deb McDaniel says “the pandemic has not hurt gaming whatsoever.” Electronic pull tab gambling accounted for nearly $711 million of wagers in fiscal 2020. That amount has grown nearly tenfold in just two years. McDaniel believes gambling wagers will easily exceed $1 billion in the current fiscal year.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Recent rain has been beneficial for North Dakota’s drought conditions, but hasn’t been enough to make a significant impact. This week’s U.S. Drought Monitor map shows much of southwestern North Dakota has been downgraded from extreme drought to severe. Extreme drought covers 59% of the state, down from 68% last week. The worst of four drought categories is exceptional That is up slightly from the previous week and now covers about 18% of the state. North Dakota is the only spot in the country, outside of the Desert Southwest, with exceptional drought.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — June will be a critical month for Enbridge Energy’s Line 3 crude oil pipeline as the company resumes construction and opponents mobilize for large-scale protests and civil disobedience. Winona LaDuke of Honor the Earth says she expects thousands of people from across the country to join the protests in northern Minnesota. Both sides are also waiting for a major ruling in June from the Minnesota Court of Appeals. The Canadian and Wisconsin replacement segments are already carrying oil, and Line 3 also clips a corner of North Dakota. The Minnesota segment is about 60% complete as a planned construction pause ends June 1. Enbridge plans to put the line into service in the fourth quarter.

In world and national news…

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — A jury has found a farm laborer guilty of murder in the abduction and killing of a University of Iowa student who vanished while out for a run in 2018. The jury on Friday found Cristhian Bahena Rivera guilty of first-degree murder in the stabbing death of Mollie Tibbetts, a friendly and bright 20-year-old who was studying to become a child psychologist. Bahena Rivera, who came to the U.S. illegally from Mexico as a teenager, will be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The verdict comes after a two-week trial at the Scott County Courthouse in Davenport, in a case that inflamed public anger over illegal immigration and concerns about random violence against women.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) — President Joe Biden started the Memorial Day weekend by visiting a rock climbing gym in northern Virginia as the state lifted all COVID-19 distancing and capacity restrictions at private businesses and much of the nation pushes toward a greater sense of normalcy. Biden sought to use the stop on Friday at Sportrock Climbing Centers to celebrate progress made as the country looks to turn the corner on the coronavirus pandemic. Biden later traveled to Joint Base Langley Eustis to thank troops for their service. After beginning with an emotional remembrance of his late son Beau, a veteran, Biden acknowledged the unheralded sacrifices that the service members and their families make.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Vice President Kamala Harris focused on the challenges of the pandemic, climate change and cybersecurity threats during her keynote speech to graduates at the U.S. Naval Academy. The speech Friday was the first by a woman in the history of the 175-year-old institution. Harris says while a pandemic can spread throughout the world in a matter of months, a gang of hackers can disrupt the fuel supply and one country’s carbon emissions can threaten the sustainability of the Earth. She told the graduating midshipmen that the world is “fragile,” and the challenge “is how to mount a modern defense to these modern threats.”

FREEHOLD, N.J. (AP) — Beachgoers at three popular Jersey Shore spots will be able to get vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus over the Memorial Day weekend. Gov. Phil Murphy on Friday announced the “Shots At The Shore” campaign that will offer free vaccinations Saturday and Sunday at Sandy Hook, Long Branch and Asbury Park. The announcement came on the day that New Jersey dropped its indoor mask mandate, which Murphy called “one of the biggest steps we can take to move forward with our recovery.” Atlantic City’s casinos can now operate at full capacity, and slot machines that had been intentionally disabled to create space between players were open again.

NEW YORK (AP) — Kids at summer camps can skip wearing masks outdoors, with some exceptions. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention posted the guidance Friday. Children who aren’t fully vaccinated should still wear masks outside when they’re in crowds or in sustained close contact with others – and when they are inside. But fully vaccinated kids need not wear masks, indoors or outside. It’s the first in a wave of guidance updates that seek to incorporate recent CDC decisions to tell Americans they don’t have to be as cautious about using masks and social distancing outdoors.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Actor Bill Cosby has been denied parole after refusing to participate in sex offender programs during his nearly three years in state prison in Pennsylvania. The 83-year-old Cosby has long said he would serve the full 10-year sentence rather than acknowledge wrongdoing and take part in the programs. This is the first year he was eligible for parole under the three- to 10-year sentence handed down in 2018. Cosby meanwhile hopes the state Supreme Court will reverse his conviction. His lawyers say the judge erred in letting five other accusers testify and letting the jury hear his damaging testimony from a related lawsuit.
