Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Jul 10, 2013) – At a special meeting Tuesday evening, (Jul 9, 2013) at the All Vets Club in Jamestown, no “concrete” suggestions were offered to keep the Club open.
The meeting was called by Vets Club Chairman, LeRoy Wegenast.
He says, about 75 individuals attended Tuesday’s meeting, which included members of local veterans organization and auxiliaries, along with Vets Club employees, and patrons and community members.
Wegenast said he was disappointed that no definitive suggestions were made by those in attendance, that would keep the financially struggling club open.
A suggestion was made to borrow money to keep the club open.
He added that at the meeting donations were taken, but were little more than a “band-aid,” of what is need to keep the club open.
He said a possible option to inject finances into the operation could be establishing a capital campaign.
He said the Vets Club Board will meet informally to discuss the club’s future.
If a decision is made to close, the closure will be immediately.
He said the next formal board meeting is in October this year, but the club will not able to stay open until that time, given the present financial circumstances if the board would decide at that time to have a fundraiser.
The Club’s financial shortfall has been about $2,500 per month.
Wegenast pointed out that two people have applied for the vacant manager’s position.
A search this spring for a paid manager was unsuccessful with no applications received.
The club had been managed on a volunteer basis by Carol Martin.
The All Vets Club employs two people full time and about 11 part-time workers.
North Dakota law requires counties to furnish veteran’s groups with a meeting place, but not a bar or restaurant.
The building is owned by Stutsman County and All Vets Club owns the bar fixtures and restaurant equipment.

The vehicle entered a ditch and tipped onto its side, when the operator, Nicholas Docktor failed to negotiate a turn.

The report says Docktor and passenger 24 year old Chelsea Axtman, of Ypsilanti, were injured.
They were transported by Jamestown Area Ambulance Service to the Jamestown Regional Medical Center.
Axtman was then flown to Bismarck for treatment.

Thirty-three-year-old Teresa Steen, of Williston, had been wanted since Monday on a warrant for facilitation of murder. Williams County Sheriff’s Detective Amanda McNamee says Steen turned herself in Tuesday night.
Steen is one of six people charged in the fatal shooting of 58-year-old hobby rancher Jack Sjol (shohl). The other five already are in custody.
Sjol’s body was found May 14 in a garbage dump, three weeks after his family reported him missing. Authorities haven’t discussed a possible motive in his death.
Court documents do not list an attorney for Steen. Her bond was set Wednesday at $25,000. She’s due back in court on Aug. 13 and could enter a plea at that time.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota judge has awarded $9.6 million to the family of a Fargo dentist who was killed in a murder-for-hire scheme.
The brother of Philip Gattuso (guh-TOO’-soh) filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Gene Kirkpatrick, who’s serving life in prison for arranging the October 2009 death of Gattuso, his son-in-law.
Roy Gattuso and his brother’s orphaned daughter are named as plaintiffs.
Judge Lisa Fair McEvers on Monday issued a ruling that calls for Kirkpatrick to pay more than $4.4 million for economic damages, $5 million for non-economic damages, and $250,000 for other damages.
Roy Gattuso says the loss of his brother will be “felt by his family and friends forever.”
The hit man, Michael Nakvinda, is serving life in prison for beating Philip Gattuso to death with a hammer.
GRAFTON, N.D. (AP) – The sheriff in northeastern North Dakota’s Walsh County is defending his decision to kill more than a dozen dogs after a pack attacked a man who was walking by a Warsaw farm.
Sheriff Lauren Wild says the size and aggressiveness of the animals ruled out capturing and quarantining them. He says he wasn’t about to endanger his officers or anyone else.
Wild says the dogs’ remains have been sent to the state Health Department to be tested for rabies. Authorities also are cautioning the public that two dogs might have gotten away.
Nineteen-year-old John Munoz, of Fargo, says he was attacked by at least eight dogs along a rural road Sunday. He says he blames the owner, not the dogs.
MINTO, N.D. (AP) – Officials in the northeastern North Dakota town of Minto are considering raising the fines for owners whose animals get loose, but they say it has nothing to do with a recent dog attack in the area.
The City Council has given initial approval to raising the fine for an animal-at-large first offense from $25 to $100, and for subsequent offenses from $45 to $400.
The Monday vote came a day after a Fargo man said he was mauled by a pack of dogs east of Warsaw, which is near Minto. But Minto Mayor Lane Kelley says that had nothing to do with the council’s discussion. He says the issue initially came up months earlier.
The council will discuss the matter further in August.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A Minnesota couple has gone to federal court to recoup $2,100 in automobile repairs for an accident allegedly caused by a mail carrier in Fargo.
Craig and Tamela Schmuck say the accident happened in December when a postal worker backed out of a driveway and struck their daughter’s 2010 Toyota Corolla.
The Schmucks say Jeffrey Borgrud operated the vehicle in a “negligent, careless and reckless manner.”
The lawsuit accuses the postal service of denying the claim for damages.
A judge earlier this week granted the government an extra month to file its response to the complaint. The U.S. attorney’s office declined comment because it’s an open case.
