Montpelier, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) — Montpelier High School will host a preliminary pageant for the Miss America 2014 Pageant, this Saturday July 13, 2013.
On Thursday’s (Jul 11, 2013) Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, the 8th Annual Montpelier Pageant, Director, Kristen Lynch said the pageant is at 7-p.m.
Prior to the pageant, Miss North Dakota 2013, Laura Harmon will be available for a Meet & Greet at the Montpelier High School, lobby from 6:30-p.m., to 6:50-p.m.
Miss North Dakota will serve as Master of Ceremonies and perform her talent.
She added that the Montpelier Pageant is the second of several preliminary pageants in the state.
On Saturday, will have 13 contestants and three contestants will be crowned to go to the state pageant, later this year in Williston, to compete for Miss North Dakota. To be crowned on Saturday will be Miss Fort Abercombie, Miss Peace Garden, and Miss James River Valley.
Ms. Lynch said areas of the Montpelier competition will include Talent, interviews, Evening Wear, Lifestyle and Fitness in Swim Wear, and on-stage interviews.
Scholarships in various amounts are given to each contestant and the three winners.
Also on our show was April Hendrickson a school guidance counselor in area, who said she encourages, and works with young ladies who are interested in competing, to help them gain self- confidence, professionalism and leadership, and more.

Bismarck, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) — The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) is alerting North Dakota residents about fraudulent telephone calls claiming to be from representatives of the driver’s license division.
Residents have reported receiving telephone calls that their driving privileges are in jeopardy and that fees must be paid in order to keep their driving privileges. The caller asks for personal information and then directs money to be sent to a California address. Some calls appear to be spoofing the phone number for the NDDOT.
The NDDOT does NOT make this type of phone call about driving privileges. This is a scam, designed to trick the recipient into giving out information to a scam artist.
The NDDOT urges North Dakotans to hang up on this type of phone calls. Residents who have questions about their driver’s license or these calls should contact the NDDOT at (701) 328-2601 or email their questions to the NDDOT email address: dot@nd.gov

WHEATLAND, N.D. (AP) – Cass County sheriff’s deputies say they have seized 170 dogs from two people at a rural property near Wheatland.
Sgt. Tara Morris says the dogs were being kept in “very poor conditions” in dirty cages. They were taken to a Casselton veterinarian. Morris says the sheriff’s department already is receiving donations from concerned citizens who want to help with medical costs.
There was no immediate word Thursday on any criminal charges against the dogs’ owners.
Law officers were holding a meeting Thursday on finding temporary homes for the dogs while their fate is determined.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The U.S. attorney in North Dakota says proposed cuts in a federal drug prevention program that provides money to the state crime lab could hurt efforts to beef up law enforcement in the oil patch.
The program is known as the Midwest High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area. Its director says that funding for the North Dakota lab – and others in the region – likely will be trimmed in the next fiscal year and possibly eliminated after that because of pressure to reduce the federal budget.
The North Dakota lab received about $78,000 from the program for 2013.
U.S. Attorney Timothy Purdon says the projected cuts come at a “particularly bad time here in North Dakota” because of dramatic increases in criminal cases tied to increasing population in western counties.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The latest forecast for North Dakota’s winter wheat crop is down 10 percent from the previous month’s forecast.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture says in its crop reduction report that the forecast, based on July 1 conditions, stands at 229.6 million bushels. Average yield is forecast at 41 bushels per acre. This is down four bushels from last year. Acreage to be harvested for grain is estimated at 5.6 million acres, down 2 percent from a year ago.
Durum wheat production is forecast at 26.6 million bushels, down 38 percent from last year. Winter wheat production is forecast at 12.8 million bushels, down 18 percent from last month’s forecast and 68 percent below last year’s record crop.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The Greater North Dakota Chamber is taking a billboard campaign touting the state’s superiority over Minnesota in job creation to the Twin Cities.
Greater North Dakota Chamber CEO Andy Peterson says a billboard soon will be going up on Interstate 94 to grab the attention of people heading west out of Minneapolis-St. Paul.
The state chamber group initially put up a bright yellow billboard along I-94 just across the Minnesota border in Moorhead. It reads, “North Dakota. Open for Business.” It angered some officials on both sides of the border who think it’s too confrontational.
That billboard has since been moved down I-94 to Fergus Falls. Peterson said it will be retired, but he didn’t say when.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – Grand Forks International Airport is planning a $2.3 million expansion, to add more parking and expand a FedEx sorting facility.
The airport plans to fund the project through bonds, using the city’s bonding authority. It could mean higher parking fees. The City Council is scheduled to vote on the proposal Monday.
Airport Executive Director Patrick Dame says passenger traffic at the airport has grown by about 53 percent since 2008. He expects 150,000 passengers this year.
A new $21 million terminal opened at the airport in August 2011.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Delta Air Lines is adding seasonal flights between Fargo and Atlanta.
The carrier says the Saturday flights will run from Dec. 21 through March 29. Delta official Joe Esposito says there is growing demand from customers wanting to connect to points in the Southeast and in Latin America during the winter.
The flights will be on 76-seat planes operated by ExpressJet.

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. Sports) — The Jamestown community will have the opportunity to support the Minnesota Vikings Children’s Fund, with an appearance Saturday (Jul 13, 2013) by two of the Vikings Cheerleaders, at Grizzly’s Grill and Saloon in Jamestown.
The cheerleaders will be in the bar area from 5:30-p.m., to 8:30-p.m.
Vikings Cheerleader calendars feature all 35 ladies, and will be for sale, for $20 each with the proceeds going to the fund.
The cheerleaders will be available to sign autographs, and have pictures taken with.
Since it’s creation, The Minnesota Vikings Children’s Fund has raised a total of $7.65 million dollars for children in the upper midwest.

SANFORD, Fla. (AP) – A prosecutor is telling jurors at the George Zimmerman trial that Zimmerman profiled 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, assuming he was up to no good — and that it led to the shooting death of the teenager. In closing arguments, prosecutor Bernie de la Rionda told jurors in Sanford, Fla., “A teenager is dead. He is dead through no fault of his own.” He said Martin was killed “because a man made assumptions” — and “because his assumptions were wrong.”
WASHINGTON (AP) – House Speaker John Boehner (BAY’-nur) says the “vast majority” of House Republicans believe they need to deal with immigration. But he says they’ll take a methodical, step-by-step approach and won’t be held to any deadlines. Boehner says legislation to secure the border and enforce immigration laws will come first. As for whether the House could ever agree to provide a path to citizenship for immigrants already in the country illegally, Boehner says, “We’re going to find that out.”
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) – A Democrat in the Texas state legislature says efforts to block passage of new abortion restrictions are over. He says abortion rights activists will now turn to the courts. A state Senate subcommittee Thusday approved the new restrictions, setting up a Senate vote expected before the weekend. The bill bans abortions after 20 weeks, and would require abortion providers to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals.
WASHINGTON (AP) – The federal government is reporting a rare surplus for the month of June — in the amount of $116.5 billion. The gain keeps the nation on track for its lowest annual deficit in five years. The Congressional Budget office forecasts the annual deficit will be $670 billion when the budget year ends in September.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Country music star Randy Travis remains in critical condition, after surgery early Thusday to relieve pressure on his brain following a stroke. The singer had earlier been improving while being treated at a Texas hospital for heart failure caused by a viral infection.
