BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The state Historical Society is mulling the purchase of Lawrence Welk’s boyhood home in Strasburg, in south central North Dakota.
Historical Society Director Merl Paaverud (PAH’-vur-ood) says the agency’s board is meeting today in Strasburg to decide whether to buy the bandleader’s birthplace. The site also would be used to tout the importance of agriculture and the region’s German-Russian heritage.
The Legislature this year included $100,000 in the Historical Society’s budget for the purchase.
The idea comes two decades after Congress earmarked $500,000 in federal funds to develop a tourist industry in Strasburg. The money included a museum of German-Russian heritage that was intended to draw visitors to the bandleader’s birthplace. Lawmakers later withdrew the money when the idea was mocked as a symbol of wasteful spending.
Bismarck, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) — The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) is alerting North Dakota residents about fraudulent telephone calls claiming to be from representatives of the driver’s license division.
Residents have reported receiving telephone calls that their driving privileges are in jeopardy and that fees must be paid in order to keep their driving privileges. The caller asks for personal information and then directs money to be sent to a California address. Some calls appear to be spoofing the phone number for the NDDOT.
The NDDOT does NOT make this type of phone call about driving privileges. This is a scam, designed to trick the recipient into giving out information to a scam artist.
The NDDOT urges North Dakotans to hang up on this type of phone calls. Residents who have questions about their driver’s license or these calls should contact the NDDOT at (701) 328-2601 or email their questions to the NDDOT email address:

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The mayor of a North Dakota city that has battled major flooding for four of the last five years says area residents should be blaming Congress rather than squabbling among themselves about a proposed Red River diversion project.
Fargo Mayor Dennis Walaker told fellow members of the Red River Diversion Authority board Thursday that he doesn’t understand recent complaints by some members of the neighboring city council in Moorhead, Minn., who are upset about spending increases on the design of a project that has not been authorized by Congress.
Walaker says the issue is about a “dysfunctional” federal government and it’s “not our problem” that the proposal isn’t further along.
The 36-mile channel would protect the Fargo-Moorhead metropolitan area in times of serious flooding. Cost is nearly $2 billion.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The latest forecast for North Dakota’s winter wheat crop is down 10 percent from the previous month’s forecast.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture says in its crop reduction report that the forecast, based on July 1 conditions, stands at 229.6 million bushels. Average yield is forecast at 41 bushels per acre. This is down four bushels from last year. Acreage to be harvested for grain is estimated at 5.6 million acres, down 2 percent from a year ago.
Durum wheat production is forecast at 26.6 million bushels, down 38 percent from last year. Winter wheat production is forecast at 12.8 million bushels, down 18 percent from last month’s forecast and 68 percent below last year’s record crop.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The Greater North Dakota Chamber is taking a billboard campaign touting the state’s superiority over Minnesota in job creation to the Twin Cities.
Greater North Dakota Chamber CEO Andy Peterson tells The Forum newspaper that a billboard soon will be going up on Interstate 94 to grab the attention of people heading west out of Minneapolis-St. Paul.
The state chamber group initially put up a bright yellow billboard along I-94 just across the Minnesota border in Moorhead. It reads, “North Dakota. Open for Business.” It angered some officials on both sides of the border who think it’s too confrontational.
That billboard has since been moved down I-94 to Fergus Falls. Peterson said it will be retired, but he didn’t say when.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The famous faces of Mount Rushmore remain in western South Dakota – not in North Dakota as one vacation mailer on the East Coast claims.
The AAA advertisement for “Great American Vacations” features a postcard of the chiseled presidential visages of Jefferson, Lincoln, Washington and Teddy Roosevelt emblazoned with “North Dakota.” The Mid-Atlantic AAA club sent the mailing to thousands of members in Delaware; Maryland; Washington, D.C.; and parts of Virginia, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Club spokesman Lon Anderson says he’s embarrassed about the mistake, and the marketing team is “humbled by the error.” He says he didn’t see the ad before it went out and would have noticed the mistake.
North Dakota Tourism Director Sara Otte (AW’-tee) Coleman says the mistake is actually fairly common.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – The Minnesota Timberwolves have secured their veteran shooting guard. The Wolves acquired Kevin Martin via a sign-and-trade maneuver with the Oklahoma City Thunder and dealt Luke Ridnour to the Milwaukee Bucks. The Thunder also sent an undisclosed amount of cash to both the Wolves and the Bucks.
The Minnesota Timberwolves and veteran power forward Ronny Turiaf have agreed to a two-year, $3.2 million contract. He played sparingly with the Clippers last season.
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) – Peace is not at hand for the Los Angeles Lakers. They waived Metta World Peace under the NBA’s amnesty provision, which will save the team about $15 million in luxury tax. He was set to earn $7.7 million next season, which the Lakers still must pay.
A person with knowledge of the deal says the Brooklyn Nets have agreed to a contract with forward Andrei Kirilenko. The Russian forward opted out of his $10.2 million deal for next season with the Minnesota Timberwolves and found a home with the Nets.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – The New England Patriots say they are “extremely disappointed” after learning their defensive back Alfonzo Dennard (DEH’-nurd) was arrested and accused of driving drunk in Lincoln, Neb., where he once starred as a Nebraska defensive back. MLB-ALL-STARS…
NEW YORK (AP) – Atlanta first baseman Freddie Freeman and Toronto reliever Steve Delabar have won the fan voting for the last spots in the All-Star game.
Freeman’s victory means Los Angeles Dodgers sensation Yasiel Puig (pweeg) will not get to play in the July 16 game at Citi Field unless he is added as an injury replacement. Puig is off to a terrific start in his first stint in the majors, but he’s only been up for five weeks, leading some to question whether he belongs on the NL team.
Freeman set a record with 19.7 million votes, and Puig was second. Delabar won with 9.6 million votes
In another All-Star note, Pedro Alvarez of the Pittsburgh Pirates has replaced Carlos Gonzalez of the Colorado Rockies for the NL team in the All-Star Home Run Derby. MLB says Gonzalez pulled out because of a sprained middle finger on his right hand.

UNDATED (AP) – Germany’s Marcel Kittel won the 12th stage of the Tour de France. England’s Chris Froome finished 14th but remains the overall leader by 3:25 over Spain’s Alejandro Valverde (ah-leh-HAHN’-droh val-VEHR’-dee).
THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) – Marianne Vos has Olympic gold medals and the road race world champion’s rainbow jersey in her trophy cabinet. Now she wants the chance to add a yellow jersey.
The Olympic road race champion is among a group of cyclists, including British Olympian Emma Pooley, who have launched an online petition urging Tour de France organizers to let women participate in next year’s race.
In an online letter to Tour director Christian Prudhomme, the riders say that after a century “it is about time women are allowed to race the Tour de France, too.”
A “Tour Feminin” women’s race in France that was staged in the past “lacked parity, media coverage, and sponsorship” the letter to Prudhomme says.

Wrigley…
CHICAGO (AP) — The proposed modernization of historic Wrigley Field overcame an important hurdle Thursday when the Chicago Cubs and the city reached an agreement allowing the team to build a first-ever electronic Jumbotron and another sign above the ivy-covered outfield walls.
The city’s landmarks commission unanimously voted to approve the deal, overcoming opposition from the local alderman and the owners of rooftop businesses who fear their negotiated views of the field will be obstructed.
The matter now goes to the City Council.
The landmarks commission’s approval was needed because it must sign off on any changes to historic structures.
