BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The state Historical Society has tabled the purchase of Lawrence Welk’s boyhood home in the south central North Dakota town of Strasburg.

Historical Society Director Merl Paaverud (PAH’-vuhr-ood) says the agency’s board met Friday in Strasburg to decide whether to buy the bandleader’s birthplace.

Paaverud says the board needs more information on the costs to upgrade and maintain the homestead.

The Legislature this year included $100,000 in the Historical Society’s budget for the purchase.

The idea comes two decades after Congress earmarked $500,000 in federal funds to develop a tourist industry in Strasburg. The money included a museum of German-Russian heritage that was intended to draw visitors to the bandleader’s birthplace.

Lawmakers later withdrew the money when the idea was mocked as a symbol of wasteful spending.

WHEATLAND, N.D. (AP) – The owner of 170 dogs seized from an apparent puppy mill in southeastern North Dakota says he is cooperating with authorities.

Fifty-one-year-old dog breeder Darcy Smith declined further comment to The Forum newspaper.

Smith has not been charged with a crime, though Cass County prosecutors are reviewing the case.

Authorities on Wednesday seized the dogs from what they said were cramped and filthy conditions at a rural property near Wheatland. The dogs were taken to a veterinarian in Casselton.

Fargo pet store owner Shaun Evanson says he bought dogs from Smith but didn’t know about the alleged poor conditions on Smith’s property. He says he won’t buy from Smith anymore.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A judge has set bond at $10,000 for a Bismarck man accused of burglarizing three Burleigh County bars in June.

Derald Horn Jr. faces three felony counts that each carry a maximum punishment of five years in prison upon conviction. Court documents do not list an attorney for him.

Horn is accused of burglarizing Flashes Bar in Sterling and the Moffit Bar in Moffit on June 9 and of breaking into Uncle Jesse’s in Driscoll later in the month.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A retired Hess Corp. manager has been tapped by Gov. Jack Dalrymple to serve as western North Dakota’s energy impact coordinator.

The governor says Rory Nelson, of Williston, will work in the state’s oil and gas region to help meet the challenges that come with rapid development.

Nelson replaces Wayne Biberdorf who is retiring.

Dalrymple says Nelson’s extensive experience in the petroleum industry and his lifelong roots in the Williston Basin will be a great asset.

Nelson grew up ranching and farming on the north bank of the Missouri River near Bainville, Mont., about nine miles west of the North Dakota border. He worked for Hess for 30 years, holding engineering and management positions until he retired in November.

The state’s energy impact coordinator maintains an office at Williston State College.

Membership is gained through a peer review process.

Music department chairman Tom Porter says the university has a 40-year history of excellent teachers, students and ensembles, and boasts a strong record of placing students in graduate schools and professional positions.

The University of Mary music department offers four majors and a minor.

SANFORD, Fla. (AP) – Friday afternoon a Florida jury  started deliberations in the murder trial of neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman, who fatally shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin last year. Zimmerman is charged with second-degree murder, but the jury will also be allowed to consider manslaughter. Under Florida’s laws involving gun crimes, a conviction on either could mean life in prison. Jurors will have to determine whether Zimmerman took the law into his own hands or was in a fight for his life and shot Martin in self-defense.

BRETIGNY-SUR-ORGE, France (AP) – At least seven people are dead and dozens have been hurt after a passenger train derailed and crashed into a station outside Paris on the eve of a major holiday weekend. The crash is the deadliest in France in years. And officials say the casualty toll could rise.

LAS VEGAS (AP) – Wet and cloudy weather is helping firefighters battling a mountain blaze that has charred almost 44 square miles near Las Vegas. But a U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman says the danger’s still too great to let residents return to about 400 homes in the area. Firefighters are battling to stop the spread of the fire south into the scenic Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, just 17 miles west of the Las Vegas Strip.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – Opponents of same-sex marriage have gone to the California Supreme Court, demanding that the gay weddings that recently resumed in the state be immediately halted. For one thing, they’re arguing that the voter-approved ban on same-sex marriages is still in effect, because the U.S. Supreme Court didn’t rule directly on the constitutionality of the ban.

PEABODY, Mass. (AP) – Workers at a Massachusetts cemetery have begun digging up the remains of the man suspected of being the Boston Strangler. The casket will be taken to the medical examiner, where tissue or bone samples will be taken. It’s part of a process that prosecutors believe will tie Albert DeSalvo to the death of Mary Sullivan, possibly the Strangler’s last victim. Already, DNA from Sullivan has been matched to a member of DeSalvo’s family. Eleven women were killed in the Boston Strangler slayings in the 1960s. DeSalvo confessed, but later recanted and was never convicted in the slayings.
