Verna Marie Pfaff, 83, Tappen, ND went to her heavenly home on July 5th, 2021, at the Ave Maria Village in Jamestown after a lengthy battle with cancer.
Verna was born in 1938, in rural Medina the daughter of Edwin and Lydia (Ruff) Enzminger. She attended a one room schoolhouse in rural Medina until 8th grade. The family then moved to Tappen, ND where she graduated from high school.
She and Ervin Pfaff were married September 9, 1956, at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Tappen, ND. Their first home was south of Tappen on Ervin’s parents’ farmstead. Later, the family moved to a farm of their own south of Tappen. Verna worked many different jobs during her lifetime. Her first and favorite was taking care of her children and husband. Verna worked at Krieger’s Grocery store in Tappen, both in high school and after she was married. Verna also worked at the Tappen School as a cook, Golden Manor in Steele and at the Dawson Grocery Store part-time for many years until she was diagnosed with cancer in 2013. Verna taught Sunday School and Bible School at the Evangelical United Brethren in Tappen for many years and was a member of the Tappen Homemakers Club. Verna and her family started attending Faith Evangelical Church in Crystal Springs in 1969 where they are currently members.
Verna was a fantastic cook and you never left hungry. Although she had many specialties, her favorites were kuchen and blachinda.
As Verna worked outside the home for many years, she also took care of several grandsons who came to live with them to help on the family farm. Josh and Jason Schmieg and Britain Pfaff meant so much to her as they helped Grandpa Ervin on the farm and helped Grandma Verna whenever they could. Verna always said she was so blessed. She loved her children and grandchildren so much, no matter who came to visit she was so thrilled to see them. Verna loved listening to music, putting puzzles together and reading.
She is survived by her husband, Ervin, of 64 years, her children, daughters Tammy (Marlowe) Schlecht, Medina, ND, Deme (Wally) Schlecht, Minot, ND, Peggy Gabrielson, Jamestown, ND, and sons Casey Pfaff, Bismarck, ND, Luke (Kelli) Pfaff, Medford, WI. 14 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and one to be born this month. 3 sisters, Ramona (Gene) Mayer, Marlys (Billie) Schmidt, Donna (Terry) Hilmoe, 2 brothers, Lawrence (Marlys) Enzminger, Donald (Marie) Enzminger and sister-in-law Betty Lang.
