Darell Berg, 70, Valley City, ND passed away at the Sheyenne Care Center on August 26, 2021.  His funeral service will be 2:00 PM, Wednesday, September 1, 2021 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Valley City.  Visitation will be at the church on Tuesday from 5:00 until 7:00 with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 PM.  Darell will be laid to rest in the Fargo National Cemetery, Harwood, ND.  The prayer service and funeral service will both be live streamed then archived and can be viewed along with his obituary on his tribute page at www.lerudschuldt.com

Darell Dean Albert Berg was born in Mercy Hospital, Valley City, ND on July 28, 1951 to Olga (Olufson) and Albert “Slim” Berg.  He attended Washington Elementary School and then Valley City High School, graduating in 1970.  After graduation, he enlisted in the North Dakota National Guard, where he began his career working as a mechanic in the shop.  In 2003, he was deployed to Iraq with the 141st ND National Guard Unit.

On March 9, 1974, he was united in marriage to Cindy Fath.  To this union, 3 children were born.  They made their home in Valley City where Darell continued his career with the ND National Guard.  They later divorced.

He married Judy Johnson on December 16, 2003.

Darell had a 39 year career with the National Guard before his health forced him to retire.  He was honorably discharged and retired on July 28, 2011 with the ranking of SFC.  He spent a year in Iraq as a communications specialist during Operation Iraqi Freedom.  During his military service, he received numerous medals and ribbons

On Easter Sunday, 2009, he had a brain stem stroke.  He stayed home for as long as he was able and then spent 5 years at Mary Hill Manor in Enderlin, ND.  Darell wanted to be closer to home and was able to move into the Sheyenne Care Center in Valley City in 2017.

He was a lifetime member of the AmVets.  Darell was inducted into the Valley City Bowling Hall of Fame in 2010.

Darell is survived by his wife, Judy; three children, Darren of Sioux Falls, SD, Mark of Fargo, ND and Jenni (Ryan) Marquart of Valley City; stepchildren, Lee and Michael Middlestead; a sister, Carol Dahl and friend Dave Hayen of Valley City; nieces and nephews, Pam (Mike) Nelson of Casselton, ND, Brenda (Jeff) Halverson of Ft. Collins, CO, Doug (Diane) Moderow of Casselton, ND, Debbie (Ron) King and Cody (McKenzie) Sivertson of Langdon, ND.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister and brother-in-law, Mary Ann and Duane Moderow; brother-in-law, Gary Dahl; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
