BISMARCK, N.D. (AP Jul 24, 2013) – State health officials have confirmed the first human case of West Nile in North Dakota.
The patient is a female in her 30s who resides in Grant County. She was not hospitalized for the illness.
Alicia Lepp, an epidemiologist with the North Dakota Department of Health, says the case is a reminder that people should protect themselves from mosquito bites. West Nile is spread through mosquitoes.
Symptoms of West Nile include fever, headache, body aches and rash.
In 2012, there were 89 human cases of West Nile virus reported in North Dakota.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Almost $1 million in federal money will be spent over the next few months to make sure North Dakota’s uninsured residents are aware of their options for coverage under the new federal health care law.
The marketing blitz is happening in all 50 states, and it’s part of the Affordable Care Act.
North Dakota has about 74,700 people without insurance.
More than half the money will go toward grants for marketing and outreach. About $300,000 will go to health centers in Beaulah, Turtle Lake, Fargo and Northwood to help spread the word.
North Dakota isn’t putting any state money toward the effort. The GOP-led Legislature only reluctantly voted this year to expand Medicaid to cover more uninsured residents, and opted to let the federal government run a new state health exchange.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota woman has dropped a lawsuit accusing a Fargo-based bank of charging unfair overdraft fees.
Amber Pieloor, of Underwood, alleged that Gate City Bank changed the sequence of checks before clearing them, resulting in the extra charges.
Pieloor’s attorney, Dan Gustafson, says his client believed she had a strong case but changed her mind after a meeting between the two parties.
The lawsuit is one of several throughout the country alleging that banks reorder the debit card entries to process the largest ones first, rather than the order that the transactions took place.
A federal judge in California has ordered Wells Fargo to pay $203 million back to customers who paid multiple overdraft fees.
Gate City’s attorney, Todd Zimmerman, did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP Jul 24, 2013) – You might expect nothing less from Twins catcher Joe Mauer and his pregnant wife, Maddie – newborn twins.
The ballclub says Emily and Maren Mauer arrived Wednesday morning after dad made it home to Minnesota for the births. Mauer was scratched from the Twins’ lineup Wednesday in Anaheim, Calif., so he could rush back for the debut of his twin girls.
The original due date for the twins was Aug. 31, but Mauer said recently that doctors told them the babies could arrive at any time.
Mauer has been placed on baseball’s paternity list. Catcher Drew Butera from Class AAA Rochester is set to replace him.
CHICAGO (AP) – Chicago’s City Council has approved a $500 million renovation of historic Wrigley Field, including a Jumbotron above the ivy-covered left-field wall.
Aldermen voted Wednesday to support the work for the home of the Cubs, one day after it got crucial approval from a City Council zoning committee and the alderman whose ward includes the ballpark.
The Jumbotron will be a first for the 99-year-old ballpark on the city’s north side. The team is also adding another sign in right field. But they agreed not to build any other signs that could block the views of rooftop businesses across the street. They also shelved a planned pedestrian bridge just west of the park.
The Cubs have been trying to put together the plan since new ownership took over in 2009.
In world and national news…
NEW ORLEANS (AP) – Experts say the blowout and fire at a natural gas well off the coast of Louisiana won’t necessarily carry much of an environmental risk. For one thing, officials say they’re seeing no sheens near the well during flyovers of the area. That indicates that gas is burning off without releasing oil or other hydrocarbons — which are sometimes found in gas wells — into the water. Several scientists say natural gas poses much less of an environmental threat to the Gulf than crude oil would pose.
GALESBURG, Ill. (AP) – President Barack Obama is accusing Congress of being less concerned about the economy than about what he calls “an endless parade of distractions, political posturing and phony scandals.” Speaking at a college campus in Illinois, Obama promised some new ideas in the weeks ahead, on manufacturing, education, housing, retirement security and health care. But Republicans say he’s offering little more than vague, empty promises.
WASHINGTON (AP) – For generations, Americans have come to depend on door-to-door mail delivery. But under a proposal being considered by the House of Representatives, that service could be virtually phased out over the next eight years. Instead of letter carriers slipping mail into front-door boxes, there would only be curbside delivery — including deliveries to mailboxes at the end of driveways — and cluster box delivery.
LONDON (AP) – The British throne may eventually be occupied once again by a King George. The new baby boy who was born Monday to Prince William and his wife Kate has been named George Alexander Louis (LOO’-ee.) For now, the littlest royal is expected to stay out of the spotlight, after making his first “public appearance” in the arms of his parents outside London’s St. Mary’s Hospital yesterday.
NEW YORK (AP) – Despite some splashy new marketing campaigns, Americans are drinking less soda. Coke, Pepsi and Dr. Pepper all sold less carbonated beverages in the second quarter of the year in North America. Coca-Cola blames the sluggish sales on a cold, wet spring. But the declines continue a trend that has been seen for years.
