Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Jul 24, 2013) — Prairie Paws Rescue in Jamestown, is joining animal rescue organizations in obtaining temporaty foster homes for a majority of over 180 dogs taken earlier this month from a puppy mill in Wheatland, North Dakota.
Prairie Paws is receiving nine of the dogs for fostering.
On July 10, 2013, the dogs were taken from the farm of dog breeder Darcy Smith and have been under quarantine at the Casselton Veterinary Service.
The dogs are not available at this time for permanent adoption.
4 Luv of Dog Rescue in Fargo was given temporary custody of the animals, and is fostering 59 of the dogs. Rescue organizations from Devils Lake, and the Minneapolis area are also assisting with fostering.
According to previous Forum News Service reports, the dogs had allegedly been kept in kennels three deep, sometimes five dogs to a kennel, with inches of waste covering the kennel floors.

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Jul 24, 2013 — The evening of July 27, 2013, the Zombie Crawl starts with registration at 8-p.m., at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Jamestown. The event will also raise funds for the James River Humane Society, and Prairie Paws Rescue.
Registration is $10.
This year. the majority of the proceeds will go to The James River Humane Society and the balance going to Prairie Paws Rescue.
Next year the plan is to hold another Zombie Crawl with the majority of the proceeds going to Prairie Paws Rescue, and the balance to The James River Humane Society.
The event is similar to a pub crawl held in Fargo.
On Wednesday’s (Jul 24, 2013) Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, Zombie Crawl creators Johnny Jerome and Joel Grant said participants are in “zombie” costumes going from bar to bar similar to Runnin’ O’ The Green in Jamestown.
T-shirts are available at The Corner Bar, and Leon’s Bridal for $15 with the proceeds also going to The James River Humane Society, and Prairie Paws Rescue.
The Zombie Crawl starts at the registration point, the Knight’s of Columbus Hall, and continues to The Office Bar, then to Shady’s at the Gladstone Inn & Suites, the Wonder Bar and concludes at The Corner Bar.
About $3,000 in prizes for the crawl, have been donated by businesses and organization, who are listed on the back of the T-shirts…. including Twins Tickets, and Mall of America Passes.
A two dollar raffle prize to support the shelter, and Prairie Paws, is for a DLP T.V. Must be present to win, the prizes at the drawing at The Corner Bar at about 11:30-p.m.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – State health officials have confirmed the first human case of West Nile in North Dakota. The patient is a female in her 30s who resides in Grant County. Experts say the case is a reminder that people should protect themselves from mosquito bites. Symptoms of West Nile include fever, headache, body aches and rash.In 2012, there were 89 human cases of West Nile virus reported in North Dakota.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Authorities say a construction worker who was buried up to his shoulders in a trench in Fargo is not believed to have suffered serious injuries.
The man was working in a trench 16 feet deep when the incident happened Wednesday morning. Other workers had dug him out by the time emergency officials arrived. He was taken to a hospital to be checked out.
Authorities did not immediately identify the man.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration will be investigating what happened.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota man says he will plead guilty to setting fire to a dwelling he lived in with his girlfriend and the couple’s child.
Ricky Sherven is charged in federal court with arson. The charge carries a maximum penalty of life in prison.
The incident happened March 3 in Parshall. Authorities say Sherven set a roll of toilet paper on fire and set it under the couch in the living room.
The fire caused about $35,000 in damage.
A change of plea hearing has not been set.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota woman has dropped a lawsuit accusing a Fargo-based bank of charging unfair overdraft fees.
Amber Pieloor of Underwood alleged that Gate City Bank changed the sequence of checks before clearing them, resulting in the extra charges.
Pieloor’s attorney, Dan Gustafson, says his client believed she had a strong case but changed her mind after a meeting between the two parties.
The lawsuit is one of several throughout the country alleging that banks reorder the debit card entries to process the largest ones first, rather than the order that the transactions took place.
A federal judge in California has ordered Wells Fargo to pay $203 million back to customers who paid multiple overdraft fees.
Gate City’s attorney, Todd Zimmerman, did not immediately return a message seeking comment.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A Taco Bell worker in Fargo accused of groping female customers in the restaurant’s drive-thru has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Twenty-year-old Austin Brady is charged with misdemeanor sexual assault and felony unlawful entry into a vehicle. He allegedly entered the women’s vehicles while delivering food, then groped them.
Brady is accused in alleged incidents in March and April. He is still employed at the restaurant.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Almost $1 million will be spent to make sure North Dakota’s uninsured residents are aware of their options under the new federal health care law. North Dakota has about 74,700 people without insurance. North Dakota isn’t putting any state money toward the effort.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Funeral services for a South Dakota teenager who went missing in North Dakota and whose body was found in Montana have been set.
The funeral for 18-year-old John Swain will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sioux Falls Christian High School in South Dakota. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the school.
Swain’s body was found June 26 at a home in Poplar, Mont. Swain had recently moved from Sioux Falls, S.D., to Bismarck, and authorities believe he was lured to a home where he was hit with a hammer before his legs were dismembered.
Two people have been charged in the death. Authorities say Swain’s body was found at a home owned by the grandmother of one of the suspects.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Minot-based Trinity Health has become the newest member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network.
The partnership gives Trinity Health’s doctors and other officials direct access to experts and resources at the Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic. Officials say the goal is to strengthen the delivery and quality of health care.
The nonprofit Trinity Health system has more than 2,700 employees and serves western North Dakota and eastern Montana. The Mayo Clinic Care Network has member organizations in 10 states, Puerto Rico and Mexico. Altru Health System in Grand Forks and St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck also are members of the network.
WATFORD CITY, N.D. (AP) – A national campaign will debut in Watford City next week to encourage men in the North Dakota’s oil patch to take a stand against domestic violence.
A town hall meeting called “Healthy Masculinity and the Patch” is set July 31. It’s one of six events planned around the country by the Healthy Masculinity Action Project.
The event is organized by the North Dakota Council on Abused Women’s Service in partnership with a Washington, D.C.-based organization called Men Can Stop Rape.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – An arrest warrant has been issued for another former North Dakota State University football player accused of skipping out on court-ordered community service.
Twenty-one-year-old Don Carter was sentenced to serve 50 hours of community service after he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor petition fraud charge. He’s accused of failing to complete the community service.
Carter and 14 others were accused of faking signatures on petition forms for two ballot initiatives last summer. Thirteen of the 15 were current or former Bison football players.
All 15 pleaded guilty last fall to an election offense and were sentenced to probation, community service and fines.
Arrest warrants also have been issued for two other former Bison players for allegedly skipping their community service: Aireal Boyd and D.J. McNorton.

NEW YORK (AP) – Atlanta Braves pitcher Tim Hudson needs surgery on a broken right ankle suffered during last night’s 8-2 win over the New York Mets. Hudson got hurt while covering first base when Eric Young Jr. stepped on the back of his lower leg. The Braves say he will undergo surgery in Atlanta once the swelling goes down.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP Jul 24, 2013) – You might expect nothing less from Twins catcher Joe Mauer and his pregnant wife, Maddie – newborn twins.
The ballclub says Emily and Maren Mauer arrived Wednesday morning after dad made it home to Minnesota for the births. Mauer was scratched from the Twins’ lineup Wednesday in Anaheim, Calif., so he could rush back for the debut of his twin girls.
The original due date for the twins was Aug. 31, but Mauer said recently that doctors told them the babies could arrive at any time.
Mauer has been placed on baseball’s paternity list. Catcher Drew Butera from Class AAA Rochester is set to replace him.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) – Patriots coach Bill Belichick (BEHL’-ih-chik) says he’s shocked and disappointed that former tight end Aaron Hernandez is facing a murder charge. Belichick says it was terrible to find out that a member of his organization was involved in a murder investigation, but that the team will learn from it and move forward. He added that the club did what it had to do when it released Hernandez. Belichick said the alleged actions of Hernandez should not reflect on the way the Patriots do business.
SOCCER-GOLD CUP…
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) – The United States men’s soccer team has advanced to the Gold Cup final by running their winning streak to a team-record 10 games.
Landon Donovan scored twice and had an assist as the Americans beat Honduras 3-1 in Arlington, Texas. Donovan fed Eddie Johnson for a goal in the 11th minute before tallying in the 27th and 53rd minutes.
Donovan has scored five times and set up seven others in the tournament.
The Americans next play Panama Sunday in Chicago. The Panamanians held off Mexico 2-1 in Arlington.

SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA, Spain (AP) – Spain’s Interior Ministry says terrorism has been ruled out as a possible cause of yesterday’s deadly train derailment in the northwest region of Galicia. The passenger train went off the rails just before arriving in the shrine city of Santiago de Compostela, where a major Christian religious festival was set to begin. At least 77 people were killed and officials say the toll could higher as workers clear the wreckage.
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) – There’s been a train derailment in Florida this morning. Firefighters at the Port of Tampa are using foam to clean up ethanol that leaked from a CSX train that derailed. Fifteen cars went off the tracks and officials say it could take much of the day to clean up the area. Access roads to the port are closed.
WASHINGTON (AP) – While the National Security Agency’s surveillance program survived a House vote yesterday, the narrow margin has opponents promising to fight on. It took furious lobbying and last-minute pleas to lawmakers for the Obama administration to secure the 217-205 victory. Rep. John Conyers, who co-sponsored the effort to halt the vast collection of phone records, says the program sets the “wrong direction in a democratic society” and the debate needs to continue.
TOKYO (AP) – Japan is welcoming the nomination of Caroline Kennedy as Washington’s new ambassador to the country. Noting the former first daughter’s close ties to President Barack Obama, Japan’s chief cabinet secretary says the nomination reflects the importance the U.S. government attaches to its longtime ally. While Kennedy lacks any obvious ties to Japan, many U.S. envoys to the country have been big political names, including former Vice President Walter Mondale and the late senator Mike Mansfield.
GRAND ISLAND, N.Y. (AP) – The oldest man in the world is a 112-year-old former coal miner and musician from Grand Island, N.Y. Guinness World Records says Salustiano Sanchez-Blazquez (sah-luh-stee-AH’-noh SAHN’-chez BLAHZ’-kehz) became the world’s oldest man last month when a Japanese man (Jiroemon Kimura) died at age 116. Salustiano was born June 8, 1901, in Spain. The world’s oldest person is a woman, 115-year-old Misao Okawa of Japan.
