Valley City, ND  (KCSi-T.V. News Aug 16, 2012)  Valley City officials are  ordering Valley City residents to limit water usage until further notice, while repairs are being made to the Master Sewage Lift Station.

Water is safe for drinking.

Mayor Bob Werkhoven  urges residents to refrain from using water for such purposes as showering, laundry, dish washing and flushing of toilets until further notice.

He says  residents downstream should not use the Sheyenne River, as the raw sewage is being pumped into the river, through a temporary pipe.

Valley City officials  are estimating the repair should completed by Monday.

 An equipment failure at the master lift station occurred shortly midnight, Thursday, during maintenance,  filling up the lift station with close to 30 feet of  sewage.

 A backup system was put on line within just a couple hours.

 

JAMESTOWN, N.D. (AP& KCSi-T.V. News Aug 16, 2012) – A witness testifying in the case of a Jamestown man accused of killing a Somali immigrant says the woman allegedly tried to dispose the body in his well.

Thirty-four-year-old Leron Howard is charged with murder and criminal conspiracy in the death of 18-year-old Abdi Ali Ahmed.

His body was found in a ditch near Spiritwood on April 30, 2011.

Authorities say he was beaten and stabbed.

Delmonte Jones testified Thursday that Howard and 22-year-old Janelle Cave came to his home early in the morning of April 30, 2011.

Jones says the two asked about Jones’ well, saying they had a body to dispose of.

Jones said he did not believe them and sent them away.

Jones was also questioned by court-appointed defense attorney, Steven Mottinger about selling marijuana to Howard and Cave, to which he replied, “no.”

Mottinger also asked Jones about a trip he, Howard and other individuals took to Montana and if marijuana was purchased.

Jones replied by saying the group went to buy shoes and clothes in Montana, but he could not recall the name of the city or the mall where they shopped.

Thursday afternoon a muddy and corroded sword was introduced into evidence, with no physical evidence from the weapon.

Other witnesses testified about clothing related to the crime that was taken into evidence by police, along with phone logs from Cave’s phone that indicating calls and text messages between Cave and Howard.

Stutsman County Deputy Jason Falk is scheduled to take the stand for cross-examination on Friday morning.

A jury earlier convicted Cave on manslaughter and criminal conspiracy charges.

She is serving an 11-year sentence, which is being appealed in the North Dakota Supreme Court.

As part of her sentence, Cave must testify in Howard’s trial.Howard’s trial is continuing in Southeast District Court in Jamestown.

 

Bismarck, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) — The NDDOT informs motorists, that the westbound Jamestown Rest Area on I-94 will be closed for maintenance work beginning the afternoon of Tuesday, August 21, 2012.

Work will include painting of the structure and is expected to be complete in a few days weather permitting.

 

KILLDEER, N.D. (AP) – Authorities say a 39-year-old Killdeer man
has been killed in a tractor accident.

     The Dunn County Sheriff’s Department says  Craig Skaar died early Wednesday morning.
     Authorities say Craig was parking a 30-horsepower yard-type
tractor at his home when the accident occurred.

Authorities say he was dismounting the tractor when he got caught by a wheel and was run over.

 GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – Au

thorities are investigating the cause of a house fire that killed a retired Grand Forks attorney.

Neighbors say 86-year-old Fred Arnason lived alone in the home, and relied on an oxygen tank to help him breathe.

The state fire marshal says the fire started Tuesday night in Arnason’s kitchen.
 

 

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The arrest of a West Fargo man on his 14th
drunken driving charge has spurred talk among some North Dakota
lawmakers about how to toughen state laws against DUI.

     Kevin Tegtmeier (TEG’-my-ur) pleaded not guilty on Thursday. He
was arrested last month, and had a blood-alcohol content of 0.25
percent.

Tegtmeier is being held in the Cass County jail on $15,000
bond.
     North Dakota’s toughest penalty against repeat drunken driving
offenders is five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

A person who’s convicted five times in seven years is eligible for the penalty.

     Fargo state Sen. Tim Mathern says he’ll be introducing
legislation to require DUI offenders to have different license
plates and a notation on their driver’s licenses.
    

 

  MINOT, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota man accused of using
counterfeit money to gamble in bars says he will plead guilty in
federal court.
     Joshua Jones, of Minot, has been indicted on two counterfeiting
charges. Authorities say he gambled with $950 in bogus bills at two
Minot bars on June 19.
     Authorities say police identified Jones at the second bar after
employees at the first bar gave a description that included a
swastika tattoo on his neck.
     A plea agreement filed earlier this week shows that Jones plans
to plead guilty to both charges.

Each charge carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s Health Department is reporting a small surge in the number of reported cases of the West Nile virus.

The agency says 13 new human cases of the virus have been identified since the first one of the year was reported last week.

Five of the people who have been infected were put into the hospital.

 Stutsman, Barnes and Dickey Counities in this area have confirmed human cases of the West Nile Virus.

Information from the North Dakota State Health Department show Barnes and Stutsman Counties with one human case, each.

Dickey County had four confirmed human cases.

LaMoure County reported one confirmed human case.

 

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A man who was kept off a bus because of his
saggy pants is accused of hitting a bus depot worker with a
magazine rack.
     Prosecutors in Fargo have charged 25-year-old Nigel Wakefield
with aggravated assault.
     The incident happened Tuesday at a south Fargo bus station.
Ticket taker James Lovejoy told Wakefield he couldn’t get on the
bus because his pants were hanging so low that his underwear was
showing.
     Police say Wakefield got mad, picked up a magazine rack and hit
Lovejoy at least three times on the right side of his head.

Lovejoy was treated for his injuries and released.

 

 FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Democratic Senate Candidate Heidi Heitkamp is
denouncing as false an ad from a third-party group backed by
Republican operative Karl Rove that alleges she received campaign
contributions from a lawyer she hired when she was North Dakota’s
attorney general.
     Heitkamp says the lawyer in question was never paid for his work
by North Dakota. She says Jack McConnell Jr. was appointed to
represent North Dakota and other states for legal action against
tobacco companies that she was involved in, but she says North
Dakota never paid him during her tenure.

McConnell and his wife donated $30,000 to Heitkamp’s 2000 failed bid for governor.
     A Crossroads spokesman did not immediately respond to a request
for comment.

The group recently pulled an ad Heitkamp said was misleading but re-released it with changes.

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s secretary of state says some signatures on the latest batch of initiative petitions are tough to read — and that hampers the verification process.
 
     Al Jaeger says he may ask the North Dakota Legislature to require people who sign petitions to also print their names.
 
     Jaeger’s office is reviewing five initiative petitions with more than 130,000 signatures.

They range from medical marijuana to a constitutional amendment on farmers’ rights.
 
     People who sign petitions have to list their addresses, and workers ask some of them later to verify whether they signed the petition.
 
     Jaeger says the process is more difficult when someone’s signature can’t be read.

He says a requirement that a signer also print his or her name would make things easier.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The president and chief executive officer of MDU Resources Group is retiring.

Terry Hildestad spent 38 years with the Bismarck-based company.

 It has interests in energy, mining, construction and electric and gas utility service.

The company says David Goodin will succeed Hildestad in January.

Goodin is president and chief executive officer of MDU Resources’ four utility businesses in multiple states.

SEATTLE (AP) – Nick Blackburn takes the hill tonight as the Minnesota Twins face off against the Mariners in Seattle.

The Twins enter the matchup having won just one of their last seven games.

This will be the Mariners first game since Felix Hernandez threw a perfect game against Tampa Bay.

 

UNDATED (AP) – Major League Baseball owners have approved the
sale of the San Diego Padres to a group that includes the O’Malley
family and pro golfer Phil Mickelson.

The group will buy the franchise from John Moores for around $800 million. Ron Fowler will become the controlling owner.

     MASON, Ohio (AP) – Andy Murray has tumbled out of the Western &
Southern Open.
     Jeremy Chardy (SHAHR’-dee) of France beat the Olympic gold
medalist from Great Britain 6-4, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals.

Murray had won their four previous matches, losing only one set.
     Serena Williams reached the quarterfinals and extended her
winning streak to 19 matches.

Top-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska (ahg-nee-ESH’-kuh rahd-VAHN’-skuh) and No. 5 Angelique Kerber also won.
     Mardy Fish and Juan Martin del Potro (wahn mar-TEEN’ dehl

     NEW YORK (AP) – With another six Olympic medals around his neck,
swimmer Michael Phelps is once again touting the breakfast of
champions.
     General Mills Inc. on Thursday unveiled limited-edition boxes of
its Wheaties cereal featuring Phelps, who now holds a record 22
Olympic medals.

Phelps was last featured on the box after the 2004 Olympics.
     After the 2008 Olympics, Phelps had jumped ship to rival Kellogg
Co. to grace the boxes of Corn Flakes and Frosted Flakes.

 KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) – Two U.S. service members are dead and
two NATO service members have been wounded in separate incidents
involving attacks by Afghans they are helping to train.

In western Afghanistan, a newly recruited Afghan village policeman opened fire on his American allies with a gun he got as part of his
inauguration ceremony.

The other shooting occurred in the south. Both gunmen were killed.
     
     BAGHDAD (AP) – The death toll is still growing even as funerals
are being held around Iraq after yesterday’s blistering string of
attacks across the country.

Officials now say at least 93 people died.

Since the start of August, more than 190 people have been killed in violence across Iraq.
     
     GENEVA (AP) – A U.N. agency says an increasing number of Syrians
are becoming refugees as they try to escape to Turkey and Jordan.
The agency says Turkey has seen a sharp increase in refugees and
the numbers are rising for Jordan too.
     
     PHILADELPHIA (AP) – One of the lead plaintiffs in a lawsuit to
block Pennsylvania’s new Voter ID law has been granted the
identification necessary to cast her ballot despite lacking the
documentation required to get the card.

Ninety-three-year-old Viviette Applewhite received her temporary identification card yesterday, the same day her attorneys appealed a judge’s ruling upholding the law Applewhite sued over.
     
     GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) – President Barack Obama is fighting back
on Medicare, defending his record in an ad launched today.

The ad accuses Republican Mitt Romney and running mate Paul Ryan of
undermining the health care program critical to millions of
seniors.

Romney is planning fund-raisers in non-battleground states.
