Valley City, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) — The North Dakota Highway Patrol reports a one vehicle accident Friday (Aug 2, 2013) about 9:25 a.m., on Highway 46, near Little Yellow Stone Park.

Captain Brian Niewind reports a 1990 Kenworth, towing a belly-dump trailer, operated by 49 year old Patrick McMahon, of Lisbon was westbound on Hwy. 46 entering the Sheyenne River Valley near Little Yellowstone Park, approximately 20 miles south of Valley City.

Fargo, N.D. (KCSi-T.V. News Aug 2, 2013) — Four North Dakota men were presented with the North Dakota Highway Patrol Colonel’s Award of Excellence for their courageous efforts to save a woman from a car fire in March 2013. Kent Severson of Gardner, Timothy Springer of Argusville, Jonathan Magnell and Mitch Goodmanson, both of Harwood, were recognized with the award.

On March 15 at 7:45 a.m., a woman was traveling on I-29 when she noticed flames coming from the rear of her vehicle. Marjorie Branden pulled onto the shoulder and became trapped inside her vehicle. She attempted to escape her vehicle but was overcome by smoke filling the cabin of her vehicle.

The four men, who were traveling individually on I-29, stopped and sprang into action.

Putting their own safety at risk, the men combined their efforts and successfully extracted Branden from her vehicle by breaking out a window, cutting her seat belt and lifting her through the broken window. After successfully removing her from the vehicle, the entire vehicle was engulfed in flames. Without their selfless actions, the outcome could have been far different.

Severson, Springer, Magnell and Goodmanson were presented with a coin displaying an engraving of the American bald eagle surrounded by the North Dakota Badlands, the Little Missouri River and the profile of Sioux warrior Red Tomahawk. Each coin is original and unique to North Dakota. The NDHP Colonel’s Award of Excellence is awarded to North Dakota state employees and private citizens for efforts and activities that benefit the North Dakota Highway Patrol, the State of North Dakota and its citizens.

As seen on CSi 14 ESPN…

LONG POND, Pa. (AP Aug 4, 2013)) — Jeff Gordon had the inside line, a lead and his first win of the season in sight, usually a sure thing for Pocono’s top winner.

Kasey Kahne was about out of time to pass his Hendrick Motorsports teammate.

”It was either to go for it and make it work,” Kahne said. ”Or not.”

Cruising from the outside, Kahne got the jump he needed, zipped past Gordon and pulled away with two laps left Sunday to win at Pocono Raceway.

Gordon nudged past Kahne after some thrilling two-wide racing and seemed poised to win at Pocono for the seventh time. After the final caution, Kahne was simply too fast, too strong to be denied his first win at Pocono since 2008.

So close to the checkered, this loss stung Gordon. Even worse, his runner-up finish came on his 42nd birthday in his 42nd career Pocono start.

Kurt Busch, who also celebrated a birthday, Ryan Newman and Dale Earnhardt Jr. rounded out the top five. The top five cars were Chevrolets.

Kahne’s 16th career win should make him a Chase lock.

Gordon hangs on to ninth in the standings, but could be out of a Chase spot if he falls outside the top 10 without a win.

Kahne took a moment in Victory Lane to remember his friend, Jason Leffler. Leffler was killed in June on a dirt track in New Jersey only days after racing in the Pocono Cup race.

Kahne and Leffler were friends and traveled together on the way home from the June race.

NEW YORK (AP) – Major League Baseball has informed the New York Yankees that Rodriguez will be suspended Monday but can play while he appeals the penalty, according to a person familiar with the deliberations. The person also says the Yankees were not told the exact length of the suspension, but were left under the impression it will be through the 2014 season. Rodriguez said on Saturday that he planned to rejoin his teammates in time for their series opener at Chicago tonight.

Thirteen other players faced discipline following baseball’s probe of the Biogenesis of America anti-aging clinic. All-Stars Nelson Cruz of Texas and Jhonny Peralta of Detroit are among those facing the stiffest penalties.

Toronto outfielder Melky Cabrera, Oakland pitcher Bartolo Colon and San Diego catcher Yasmani Grandal served suspensions after positive tests last year. They’ve been tied to this performance-enhancing drug case, but can’t be disciplined again for the same offense.

Michelle Kwan has been hired by Fox Sports to cover the Winter Olympics in Sochi.

The nine-time U.S. and five-time world champion figure skater will cover a variety of sports for Fox, which is launching its cable sports channel, Fox Sports 1, this month.

Kwan, a two-time Olympic medalist (silver in 1998, bronze in 2002) says she has been encouraged by the network to report on sports outside the Olympics, as well, and is hoping to be involved in Fox’s Super Bowl coverage just before the Sochi Games.

Fox, which is not an Olympics rights-holder – NBC carries the Olympics – also has hired Olympic skiing champion Picabo Street as another analyst. Kwan is hopeful of pairing up with Street on some assignments in Sochi.

In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) – Britain, Germany and France have closed their embassies in Yemen today, while the U.S. is keeping diplomatic posts in Yemen and elsewhere in the Arabian peninsula and North Africa shut through the week. The closures have been prompted by what U.S. lawmakers are describing as online terrorist chatter similar to what was seen before 9/11. Meanwhile, Interpol has issued a global security alert over suspected al-Qaida involvement in recent prison escapes in Iraq, Libya and Pakistan.

NEW YORK (AP) – New York Yankees Manager Joe Girardi says he’s planning to play Alex Rodriguez against the White Sox tonight in Chicago. But the third baseman could be suspended by then. Major League Baseball is expected to announce that it’s punishing at least 14 players linked to its investigation into a Florida clinic accused of distributing banned performance-enhancing drugs. A person familiar with the decision says that list will include A-Rod, but he would be eligible to play if he appeals the penalty to an arbitrator.
