Leone Fick, 89, formerly of Litchville, ND, passed away Friday, March 4, 2022, at Good Samaritan Society, Oakes, ND.
Leone Odella Person was born in Rosebud Township, Barnes County, ND, on May 29, 1932, to Oscar and Lena (Tweit) Person, the youngest of seven children. She was baptized at Skandia Lutheran Church October 10, 1933, confirmed becoming a member at First Lutheran Church, Litchville, on April 7, 1963, and a lifelong member of Sarah Circle. Leone moved into Good Samaritan Assisted living in March of 2018 and moved into the nursing home in July 2019.
Leone’s father passed away from double pneumonia when she was one year old. She and her mother continued to live and work on the farm with the help of her oldest, and favorite brother, George. She went to Rosebud Country School until third grade then she and her mother moved to Litchville. Leone wanted a career of becoming a beautician and worked at the city’s salon washing and setting hair while in high school. As most young ladies of that time, she quit school when she was a sophomore to help her mother in the café business. She was unable to fulfill her dream of beauty school because she needed a high school diploma.
Leone married Harold Fick on December 18th, 1951, at Fort Ransom, ND with witnesses, George, and Hilda Person. She and her husband moved to various locations in North Dakota, where he worked at Garrison Dam and grain elevators in Anamoose and Harvey. They moved to Litchville in 1957 when Harold drove bulk truck for Standard Oil. In 1972, they bought J & H Farm Service Supply where she did the bookkeeping. In 1978, they sold the fertilizer plant to Farmers Union and started Fick and Sons, Inc., which continues today by her son, Dennis. She did all the bookkeeping for the trucking business for 40 years. Harold passed away in January 2020. They were married for 69 years.
Leone fully supported her husband and sons in whatever endeavor they pursued. With Harold’s love of horses, wagon trains and trail rides, through Jerome’s love of motorcycles and mudrunners, and Dennis’ love of draft horses and horsepulling, she was at every event. Then came the grandchildren with all the school activities, of basketball and again, horses. She was Liz’s wingman, traveling with her to her granddaughter’s basketball and volleyball games, pony pulls, then to college graduations.
All who met Leone, immediately felt welcomed. Living at the northeast entrance to Litchville, she would wave to anyone passing by. She wasn’t one to get angry or upset because that wasn’t her nature. She could grow tulips and petunias like no other, appreciated nature and loved animals and was just a lovely woman.
Her surviving family members are Jerome Fick, and Dennis and Liz Fick, Litchville. Grandchildren, Daryl and Nicole Fick, Sanborn; Travis Fick and Tracy Grabe, Henning, MN; Denise and Chris Erlandson, Oakes; Abbey and Justin Quandt, Oakes; Cassandra and Mike Werlinger, Linton. Great grandchildren Samatha, Nathan and Courtnie Fick, Jackson, Brooke, and Natalie Erlandson, Rowan and Knute Quandt, and Dawson Werlinger.
Greeting her in heaven was her husband, Harold, and daughter-in-law Mary Lou (Sobieski) Fick, her parents and brothers, George, Clifford, Russell, James, and sisters, Pearl Higgins, and Maelyn Justesen.
Memorial Service will be on Thursday, March 10th, 7 pm with visitation beginning at 6, at the Lerud Mathias Funeral Home, Valley City. No church service will be held. Leone will be buried by her husband at Memory Gardens later in the spring. The service will be live streamed then archived on Leone’s tribute page along with her obituary at www.lerudmathias.com
