Jamestown (UJ) The University of Jamestown baseball team used the long ball for a 10-6 win in Sunday’s first game against Hastings (Neb.) College, then rode a strong start by Payson Mills (JR/Blackfoot, ID) in a 4-3 game two win for a sweep at Jack Brown Stadium.
The two teams will meet again Monday at Jack Brown in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
Xander Orejudos (JR/Ellensburg, WA) and Kendall Yackley (JR/Lynnwood, WA) each homered twice, and Julian Sansores (SO/Bellflower, CA) also left the yard as the Jimmies rallied for a 10-6 win in the opener.
Sansores homered with one out in the second to give UJ a 1-0 lead, then Hastings rallied for two runs in the top of the third to go ahead 2-1. Orejudos hit his first homer with two outs in the bottom of the third to tie the game.
In the bottom of the fourth, Sansores drew a two-out walk and Yackley followed with a homer to left center, making it 4-2 Jimmies. Trent Peters (SO/Niverville, MB, Canada) laced a two-run double in the bottom of the fifth as the lead grew to 6-2.
Hastings took advantage of two Jamestown errors and a wild pitch to push four runs home in the sixth to tie the game at 6-6. UJ countered with four runs of their own in the bottom half. Yackley hit a solo homer to right center with one out, then Orejudos later hit a three-run bomb to left center to increase the lead to 10-6.
Hayden Brown (JR/Buckeye, AZ) (1-0) got the win with one inning of relief. Trei Hough (SO/Pocatello, ID) started and went five innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on three hits, striking out three and walking one.
Yackley finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI. Orejudos was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and drove in four.
In the second game, Payson Mills struck out 11 in five innings while allowing only two runs on five hits, as Jamestown finished the sweep with a 4-3 win.
Trent Peters, Triston Madison (FR/Spokane, WA), and Tanner Shepard (SR/Grand Rapids, MN) each drove in a run while Xander Orejudos scored on a steal of home. Jamestown led 3-1 after three, then added a fourth run in the fifth after the Broncos had cut the lead to 3-2.
Mills struck out the side in the first and the fifth, and had two strikeouts in both the third and fourth innings. He improved his season record to 3-1 and has recorded 17 strikeouts in his last nine innings. Eric Kessler (FR/Dallas, OR) worked the seventh for his fourth save.
Jamestown stole eight bases in the game, with Yackley and Orejudos each stealing a pair. Isaiah Roebuck (FR/Marana, AZ) was 2-for-4 and scored twice from the leadoff spot in the order.
