SIOUX CENTER, Iowa (UJ) — The University of Jamestown pitching staff held Dordt University to one run in sixteen innings Saturday, winning a pair of games by scores of 2-0 and 6-1.
Saturday’s games, although played in Sioux Center, were technically home games for the Jimmies as weather conditions in Jamestown forced the location change.
Trei Hough (SO/Pocatello, ID) allowed four hits in six innings, striking out five as the Jimmies took the opener 2-0. Hayden Brown (JR/Buckeye, AZ) struck out two batters in the seventh to earn the save.
Jamestown scored their first run in the second, as Luke Shekeryk (SR/Seattle, WA) came home as Brown reached on an error by the right fielder. Quade Peters (FR/West Fargo, ND) made it 2-0 in the fifth with a two-run solo home run.
Andrew Kupec (SO/Peoria, AZ) and Tayler Cullen (SR/Santa Rosa, Calif.) had the other Jimmie hits. Kupec also recorded a stolen base.
In the second game, UJ fell behind 1-0 but scored six unanswered runs to complete the sweep. Payson Mills (JR/Blackfoot, ID) allowed only one run on four hits, striking out seven to get the win. Cameron Multer (SO/Greeley, CO), Ben Ray (JR/Federal Way, WA), and Eric Kessler (FR/Dallas, OR) combined to pitch four scoreless innings, striking out six while giving up two hits.
Triston Madison (FR/Spokane, WA) reached on an error in the bottom of the second, allowing Tayler Cullen to score and tie the game at 1-1. The Jimmies’ go-ahead run came in the third inning on a two-out single by Cullen to score pinch-runner Austin Shirley (JR/Idaho Falls, ID).
Andrew Kupec hit a sacrifice fly and Xander Orejudos (JR/Ellensburg, WA) scored on a passed ball in the seventh to make it 4-1, then Jamestown added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth. Madison hit a double to center field allowing Isaiah Roebuck (FR/Marana, AZ) and Blake Arritola (JR/Salem, OR) to cross the plate.
Tanner Shepard (SR/Grand Rapids, MN) finished 3-for-4 and Cullen was 2-for-4 as the Jimmies finished with 10 hits.
After on off day on Sunday, Jamestown plays a doubleheader on Monday at Briar Cliff (Iowa) University beginning at 1 p.m.
Men’s Golf
ORANGE CITY, Iowa (UJ) — The University of Jamestown men’s golf team finished eighth of 15 teams at the Red Raider Cup Saturday, hosted by Northwestern College at Landsmeer Golf Course.
The Jimmies finished with a team score of 10-over 294, two shots behind Iowa Central CC and Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) University, and four shots behind Midland (Neb.) University. Morningside (Iowa) University placed first at 12-under 272.
Tomas Garcia (FR/Vigo, Spain) was the top placer for UJ, shooting a 2-under 69 to take sixth. Tate Olson (SR/Cook, Minn.) tied for 30th at 3-over 74, Treyton Forsman (SR/Lewiston, Idaho) tied for 43rd at 4-over 75, Jackson Worner (JR/West Fargo, N.D.) tied for 50th at 5-over 76, and Max Noffsinger (FR/Ft. Collins, Colo.) tied for 62nd at 7-over 78.
Playing as individuals, Gehrig Geiss (FR/Glen Ullin, N.D.) tied for 58th at 6-over 77 and Benjamin Schaefer (SO/New Rockford, N.D.) tied for 62nd at 7-over 78.
Thomas Craig of Iowa Western CC turned in the top score in the 80-player field, finishing at 6-under 65.
The Jimmies will compete at the GPAC Spring Championship Friday and Saturday at The Bluffs GC in Vermillion, S.D.
