VALLEY CITY, N.D. (AP Aug 18, 2012) Water restrictions were lifted for Valley City residents.
Officials say Valley City is no longer pumping raw sewage into the Sheyenne River after a master lift station plug was broken during maintenance.
The sewage flow into the river was halted late Friday afternoon.
City officials say the master lift station holds all of the city’s sewage and pumps it into the sewage lagoon.
During routine maintenance the plug to the master lift drain failed and inundated the station.
Officials estimate sewage was pumped into the river for about 30 hours before the problem was fixed on Friday.
Valley City Mayor Bob Werkhoven says the cause of the master lift station break-down is a major concern and will be investigated.
Something in the system failed and it shouldn’t happen again.
CSiNewsNow – Jamestown, ND – August 18, 2012: The Jamestown Fire Department was called out at 9:45pm Saturday evening to the Dairy Queen on 10th St SW in Jamestown for a possible fire in the ventilation hood.
DQ Jamestown franchise owners,
Cheryl and Mark Wolf had just arrived and observed smoke and a flame coming from the vent.
The fire department was alerted as a precaution.
The fire department removed the vent screens and inspected the hood area.
They observed that a small flash-over event occurred in one corner causing the flame and smoke, but it was not enough to activate the hood’s fire suppression system.
Cheryl Wolf said her “heart was beating a million miles an hour” when they called the fire department.
The Jamestown Fire Department was on scene for 20 minutes while the inspection was made.
After the all clear, the DQ staff and patrons were able to return to the building.
The DQ remained open Saturday evening serving ice cream only as the grill was shut down until the screens and hood had been recleaned from the flash-over event.
Jamestown, ND (Aug 18, 2012) – After a pause in proceedings over the weekend, the trial of 34 year old Leron Howard of Jamestown will resume today Monday (Aug 20, 2012). The prosecution will call more witness for testimony today.
On Friday, state medical examiner William Massello testified on Friday that Ahmed was hit on the head and suffered a devastating brain injury, and
that he also was stabbed in the chest and stomach area
Howard is charged with murder and criminal conspiracy, both Class AA Felonies, in the death of Abdi Ali Ahmed of Jamestown, who was 18 years old at the time of his death.
Ahmed’s body was found in a roadside ditch, near Spiritwood on April 30, 2011, with the cause of death in the autopsy report as a result of stab wounds and blunt force trauma to the head.
Janelle Cave is expected to take the stand, today, as ordered as part of her sentencing from her conviction of manslaughter, and conspiracy in the death of Abdi Ali Ahmed, of Jamestown.
Cave and Howard shared a home at the time Ahmed was killed.
In February, of this year, co-defendant 22 year old Janelle Cave, of Jamestown was found guilty in Southeast District Court, of manslaughter and criminal conspiracy in Ahmed’s death.
Cave was sentenced to serve 11 years in prison, and is appealing her conviction in North Dakota Supreme Court.
As part of her sentence, she is required to testify against Howard at his trial.
See a recap of the trial proceedings through last Friday on line at CsiNewsNow.com under Jamestown News.

VALLEY CITY, N.D. (AP) — The new manager of the Valley City National Fish Hatchery is working to make the federal facility a recreational destination.
28 year old Kurt Eversman, has been managing the hatchery northwest of Valley City since March.
He says, “This is federal property and people should be able to come and enjoy it. I would like to see people on the property.”
The Valley City National Fish Hatchery atracting people from Valley City and the surrounding area include expanding the fishing pond now restricted to people 12 and younger to people 18 and younger along with senior citizens.
Eversman said he plans to replace the pond’s fishing pier with track decking, and the park benches need to be replaced. He also wants to add a simple hiking trail, plant patches of wildflowers and build an archery range.
Eversman has been working with Girl Scouts from an adjoining camp to construct the two-mile hiking trail, complete with bird blinds and suitable habitat.
Eversman also plans to begin an archery program. He has the bows and is seeking people to train as instructors. He also is thinking of adding a ninehole disc golf course to the site.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A man convicted of killing two Fargo men
and torching their apartment has been turned down in his bid for a
new DNA test of some evidence in his case.
Dale Burke is serving a life prison sentence without parole for
the April 1997 deaths of Lawrence Nelson and Edmund Huotari
(ho-TAR’-ee).
Prosecutors had a pair of Burke’s bloodstained jeans at his
trial. DNA testing showed the blood was probably Huotari’s blood.
Burke claimed during his trial that Huotari bled on his jeans
when Huotari cut himself with a carpet knife.
Burke is now saying he misspoke and he doesn’t think the blood
was Huotari’s.
Burke asked for more sophisticated DNA testing on
the jeans to back up his theory.
North Dakota’s Supreme Court rejected the testing request
Friday.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s Supreme Court says a deputy
state prison warden who was fired for sexual harassment must get
his job back.
The court’s ruling says Robert Heier (HY-ur) was improperly
disciplined twice for the same wrongdoing.
The court says he’s entitled to reinstatement and almost three years’ back pay.
Heier got into trouble in April 2009.
He grabbed the backside of a female prison employee at a music show and said he would have her fired if she told anyone.
Heier was suspended from his job for a day.
The employee said later the punishment wasn’t strong enough. The
case was reopened and Heier was fired.
The Supreme Court’s ruling says North Dakota law doesn’t allow
for a state employee to be punished more than once for the same
misconduct.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota had the lowest unemployment
rate in the nation in July, even as it increased slightly from the
month prior.
Job Service North Dakota says the state’s jobless rate was 3 percent in July.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The state Public Service Commission says
North Dakota’s strong harvest has resulted in a record amount of
grain storage licensed this year.
The total licensed capacity stood at 379.8 million bushels last week, breaking the record of 368.1 million bushels for the same time a year ago.
WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – Crews have completed work on a temporary
truck bypass on the west side of Williston.
The bypass will help route heavy oil field truck traffic around
Williston and ease congestion in city limits.
A temporary bypass also is planned on the east side of Williston. It’s to be done by the end of the year.
Local and state officials including Gov. Jack Dalrymple
scheduled a dedication ceremony today for the $10 million
west-side project.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Minot is experiencing an increase in the
number of hotel rooms being built.
There were less than 1,600 hotel rooms available in the area four years
ago.
Now, that number has increased to 2,300.
Another 475 rooms are under construction and expected to open soon.
The majority of the new hotels are popping up along Minot’s
southern edge.
Wendy Howe with the Minot Convention and Visitor’s Bureau says
such a surge is rare.
She says she doesn’t know anywhere else in the country where hotels are popping up as rapidly.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – This isn’t your average school sighting.
Bismarck police say a moose was spotted on the grounds of an
elementary school in Bismarck Saturday morning.
Police are unsure how the animal got to the school. They started receiving
calls about the moose around 7 a.m.
Police and game wardens from the North Dakota Game and Fish
Department followed the moose to the Missouri River, where the
animal swam back and forth several times before exiting the river
south of Mandan.
Bismarck police Lt. Dave Draovitch says the animal didn’t cause
any damage and nothing was wrong with it.
Several wild animals have made their way to Bismarck over the
years.
