Jamestown, ND (KCSi- T.V. News) Dry conditions led to grass fires on Sunday (Aug 11, 2013) in the Jamestown, Cleveland and Medina areas.
The Jamestown Rural Fire Department was called out at about 5:25 p.m. to a grass fire near 28th Street Southeast, near Pelican Point on the west side of the Jamestown Reservoir where about five acres of pasture burned.
The cause of the fire was ash from garbage being burned in a barrel nearby.
Fourteen JRFD firefighters and five units responded.
No injuries and no structures were damaged.
According to a Law Enforcement Center dispatcher, at 2:37 p.m. a grass fire was reported near Cleveland that burned about one acre and three large hay bales.
Cleveland Rural Fire Department firefighters were called back to the scene at 4:23 p.m. when one of the bales re-ignited.
A grass fire about five miles northwest of Medina was reported at 4:42 p.m.
Spiritwood, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) – Construction is starting on the ethanol plant that’s been in the works for two years.
The ground-breaking ceremony was held Friday (Aug 9, 2013) for the $150 million Great River Energy’s Dakota Spirit AgEnergy plant at Spiritwood.
It was estimated that about 300 people attended, including officials from the company along with North Dakota’s Congressional delegation, and local officials.
Production is slated to begin in January 2015. The plant will employ about 36 people and will use about 23 million bushels of corn to produce about 65 million gallons of the alternative fuel each year.
The plant is to use excess steam power from Great River Energy’s Spiritwood Station. The combined heat and coal-fired power plant currently is idled due to lack of demand for electricity in Minnesota but is scheduled to come online in January 2015.
Speaking were Governor Jack Dalrymple along with U.S. Senator, John Hoeven, U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp and Congressman Kevin Cramer.
In addition to the groundbreaking ceremony, an open house was held featuring project partner exhibits, along with tours of the Spiritwood Station, followed by a picnic lunch.

And Blaine embodies the true spirit of North Dakota every time he represents us at the Special Olympics. I’m so proud of him, and I look forward to hearing more about his future competitions and, of course, future awards.”

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Aug 9, 2013) — Jamestown College’s McKenna Thielsch Center will be open and ready when classes begin Aug. 26, 2013 providing a learning environment with state-of-the-art equipment and highly qualified faculty to prepare students for science-based careers as well as for graduate and professional school.
College President, Robert Badal says “As a liberal arts institution, we value the sciences as an integral part of Jamestown College. Having a state-of-the-art facility is vital as we move the College forward.”
The 20,500-square-foot building houses six laboratories for the Departments of Biology and Chemistry, two simulation laboratories for the Department of Nursing, a student research lab, and a greenhouse.
Vice President for Planning and Administrative Services, Tom Heck adds, “There are just a few odds and ends left on the punch list and some exterior details.
We’re in good shape to be ready for the start of the semester.”
The second phase of the project, a complete renovation of the adjacent Orlady Hall into office space and classrooms, is well underway and will continue throughout the 2013-14 school year.
The McKenna Thielsch Center is named for 1943 Jamestown College graduate Margaret (McKenna) Thielsch, who contributed the lead gift toward the project. The combined 38,000-square-foot complex will be the College’s largest academic building.
Polly Peterson, Vice President for Institutional Advancement and Business Affairs, says fundraising for the project is nearing completion.
She adds, “The support of alumni and friends of Jamestown College has been both humbling and exciting. Great things are happening here because people believe in the value of the educational experience we provide. As this new facility opens this fall, it brings me such joy to know that the fundraising is just shy of reaching the $9 million goal.”

WAHPETON, N.D. (AP) – A Nov. 6 jury trial has been scheduled for a South Dakota man accused of attacking a female store clerk with a pair of scissors in the North Dakota city of Wahpeton.
Twenty-year-old Christopher Yellow Earrings, of Peever, has pleaded not guilty to felonious restraint, reckless endangerment and preventing arrest.
Authorities allege that he entered a Family Dollar store on May 29, forced employees and customers into a back room, and inflicted a wound on the clerk that required stitches. Police say an officer also injured his thumb trying to arrest Yellow Earrings.
Yellow Earrings could face up to 40 years in prison if convicted on all eight felony counts against him.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Two men are accused in federal court for separate assaults on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation.
Robert Lee Azure is charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and assault resulting in serious bodily injury for an April 13 incident. Authorities say he attacked another man with a knife.
Robert Lee DeLong Jr. is charged with assault resulting in serious bodily injury for a July 4 incident. No further details were available.
Trials are scheduled Oct. 1 for Azure and Dec. 10 for DeLong.
Public defenders for the two men were not available for comment.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota University System officials say an investigation into emails of the state’s 10 college presidents has expanded.
The Legislature’s research arm has been looking into the emails amid the controversy surrounding Hamid Shirvani, the former chancellor whose contract was bought out after complaints about his leadership style.
The original request by an unnamed lawmaker or lawmakers had asked for emails since November and included certain topics to narrow down the search. The new probe asks for all emails since July 2012.
Legislative Council officials say they don’t have to disclose who is requesting the documents because it would violate attorney-client privilege.
University system spokeswoman Linda Donlin says the investigation is likely to cost $40,000 in staff time.
EAST GRAND FORKS, Minn. (AP) – With the death last week of an 11-year-old western Minnesota boy, there are now at least 14 children with autism known to have died in the U.S. this year after slipping away from their caregivers.
The tragic phenomenon goes by various names – wandering, elopement, bolting – and about half of autistic children are prone to it.
Advocacy groups say wandering has led to the deaths of more than 60 children in the past four years. They are working to raise awareness and find more effective preventive measures.
All but one of this year’s victims drowned, evidence of a fascination that many autistic children have with water. The body of the latest victim, Anthony Kuznia, was found Thursday in the Red River near his home in East Grand Forks, Minnesota.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Production expenses rose about 20 percent for farmers in the Great Plains last year.
The Agriculture Department says production expenses in the region totaled $88.8 billion in 2012, up from $73.8 billion in 2011.
The region includes North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas.
Farm production expenses nationally rose about 10 percent over the year, to $351.8 billion.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A group of Chinese milling executives plan to visit North Dakota to get a firsthand look at the state’s hard red spring wheat crop.
The North Dakota Wheat Commission says the millers will be in the state Sunday through Tuesday. Officials say the Chinese millers are interested in hearing about growing conditions, price outlook and wheat breeding and quality programs at North Dakota State University.
Officials say demand for U.S. wheat in China is strong and growing. U.S. sales to the country for the first two months of the year totaled more than 131 million bushels. Officials say that’s nearly nine times the five-year average.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Officials with several North Dakota agencies say they’re struggling to fill some of new positions approved by lawmakers in the last session.
Authorities cite the high cost of living and lack of housing, particularly in the western part of the state, as reasons for a lack of interest in some jobs.
Many of the 141 new jobs focus on the oil patch and include industry regulators and public safety officials.
The Highway Patrol has received 34 applicants for 15 open slots.
A spokeswoman for the state Human Resource Management Services says some of the agencies cannot offer salaries competitive with private companies, many in the energy industry.
DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) – After decades of battling the rising waters of Devils Lake, the city of the same name is starting to flourish.
Devils Lake is getting a new big-box store, restaurant, hotel and manufacturer, along with more homes. The city also is considering building a convention and wellness center.
Local economic development official Chris Schilken says it’s not “crazy growth” like in the western oil patch, but “growth in a reasonable way.”
The flood fight since the early 1990s has cost more than $1.5 billion. But the final pieces of flood protection infrastructure are nearing completion, and developer Rick LaFleur says the community can now plan for growth.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – The Grand Forks Public School District is asking for a nearly 29 percent increase in property taxes.
School district officials say the request is due to growing student enrollment and an unfair distribution formula for state money. Officials say they ended the last school year a $6 million deficit.
The increase comes after a property tax relief measure was approved by the state Legislature earlier this year. Republican Sen. Ray Holmberg of Grand forks says the district should be paying for the deficits by reducing the amount of cash it has on hand, rather than taking it from taxpayers.
Superintendent of schools Larry Nybladh says the district had 230 news students last year and “didn’t receive a dime of state money” for them.
WAHPETON, N.D. (AP) – Wahpeton residents will vote Oct. 1 on a plan to remodel and renovate school buildings.
The School Board has set a limit of $30 million for the project. It’s to include an addition to the middle school with more gymnasium and classroom space, and mechanical and electrical upgrades at the high school.
The school district plans several public informational meetings over the next two months.
The project would be completed by fall 2015 if voters approve.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s U.S. attorney says the LGBT community will have an ally in government as long as he’s the top federal prosecutor in the state. Timothy Purdon says the state still has much work to do in order to “ensure equality, opportunity and justice for every North Dakotan, regardless of identity or orientation.”
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A new hangar at the Fargo Air Museum honors two area aviation pioneers who died in crashes.
Groundbreaking ceremonies were held Saturday for the Beck-Odegaard wing. It is named for Gerry Beck and Bob Odegaard, the two men who helped establish the museum.
Beck died at an air show is Oshkosh, Wis., in 2007, and Odegaard was killed in 2012 while practicing for an air show in Valley City.
The new 100-foot-by-150-foot building will house several vintage planes, including a B-25 Mitchell that Beck donated during the museum’s early years.
Construction is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – An image of an experimental space suit developed at the University of North Dakota is on display at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.
UND’s lead space suit designer Pablo de Leon says the poster of the astronaut outfit is part of museum’s ‘Suited for Space’ exhibit that features space suits used in Apollo, Gemini and Mercury missions.
UND has tested its so-called planetary exploration suits from North Dakota’s Badlands to the bottom of the world in Antarctica to simulate missions to Mars.
