Valley City, ND August 16, 2013 (KCSi TV) – Two women were seriously injured in a crash about 5:04 p.m., Friday afternoon.
The North Dakota Highway Patrol reports a 2003 Ford F-150 pickup, driven by 69-year-old Sandra Burchill of rural Valley City was traveling westbound on Main Street at a high rate of speed and struck an eastbound 2012 Chevrolet Impala, driven by 65-year-old Geraldine Knutson of Valley City at the intersection of Main Street and 2nd Ave SE, which was preparing to turn north onto 2nd Avenue.
The force of the collision sent both vehicles westward, striking 5 other vehicles, both moving and parked vehicles, before coming to rest in front of the VFW. One car was pushed onto the sidewalk.
Barnes County Fire & Rescue crews extricated both women from their vehicles. Burchill was not wearing a seatbelt. They both were transported to Mercy Hospital in Valley City, then to Sanford Hospital in Fargo by ground, then air ambulance for treatment of serious injuries.
Burchill was released. As of Sunday, Knutson remained in serious condition. Other drivers involved sustained possible minor injuries. Alcohol was not a factor. The crash remains under investigation.
Also investigating at the scene were Valley City Police, and the Barnes County Sheriff’s Office.
LaMoure, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) — A Fullerton, N.D., teen died following an early morning crash Saturday (Aug 17, 2013) near LaMoure.
The North Dakota Highway Patrol, reports, 18 year old Micah Wagner, was driving a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 about 2 1/2 miles south of LaMoure when the crash happened at 7:30 a.m.
The patrol says Wagner lost control of the vehicle on a gravel road. The vehicle went into the east ditch, through a barbed wire fence, into a pasture and overturned. Three of the five people in the vehicle were ejected.
None of the occupants was wearing a seat belt.
All five were injured and transported to Oakes Medical Center, where Wagner died.
The others in the vehicle were 21 year old Dylan Eull, of Verona, 18 year old Daniel Haugen, of LaMoure; and 15 year old Madeline Haakenson, of Dickey, and 14 year old Caitlin Miedema, of Litchville.
Also responding to the crash were the LaMoure County Sheriff’s Office and LaMoure County Fire and Ambulance.
The Highway Patrol continues with the investigating.
Tappen, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Aaug 18, 2013) – The North Dakota Highway Patrol reports, one person died and another was injured in a one-vehicle crash near Tappen, Sunday morning about 1-a.m.
The report says a 2007 Chevrolet pickup was traveling about a half a mile north of town when the driver lost control of the vehicle, entering the west ditch where it struck an approach and rolled. Both occupants were thrown from the vehicle. Neither was wearing seat belts.
24 year old Scott Lindegard, of Hallock, Minnesota, was taken by Kidder County Ambulance to Sanford Health in Bismarck. His condition was not released.
The other occupant of the vehicle, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead on scene. The car was totaled. The Patrol listed Lindegard as the driver, but the it is still investigating who was actually driving the vehicle.
The Stutsman County Sheriff’s Office reports a 20-year-old rural Jamestown man rolled his vehicle about 12:10 a.m. Sunday (Aug 18, 2013) on U.S. Highway 52 near mile marker 263.
The report says he was airlifted to Sanford Hospital In Fargo, with possible life-threatening injuried, after being extracated by the Jamestown Fire Department.
He was the lone occupant.
Stutsman County Sheriff’s Deputy Damian Hoyt, says, the driver, whose name is not being released, yet, was operating his vehicle at a high rate of speed, when it entered an east ditch, struck an approach, and rolled several times..
Hoyt says, “The vehicle was destroyed.”
He says, alcohol was not a factor, but speed was.
The driver was wearing a seat belt.
The crash remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office and the North Dakota Highway Patrol.
The NDHP, Jamestown Police, and Jamestown Area Ambulance Service responded to the scene.
Valley City, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Aug 16, 2013– The North Dakota Highway Patrol, Friday afternoon identified one of the persons killed in Wednesday’s crash between two tractor-trailer rigs. He was identifed as 46 year old Allen Tofsrud, of Leeds, North Dakota.
Tofsrud was driving a semi-truck east on Highway 46, failed to stop at the intersection and struck a northbound semi-truck on Highway 1. Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.
The name of the second man, driving the other rig is being withheld and will be released upon further investigation.
Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Aug 16, 2013) – A segment of 81st Ave SE west of Jamestown that is currently closed to traffic is anticipated to remain closed for about another week.
The closure starts at 20th St SW, near the new Titan Machinery location, and extends to the south for approximately 300 feet.
A detour is in place on 38th St SE.

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) — The Jamestown Academy of Mixed Martial Arts, presents a FREE Women’s Defense Seminar, “Fight Like A Girl,” on Saturday August 24, 2013 from 2-p.m.-5-p.m., at the Jamestown Civic Center, Exhequor Room.

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – A judge has refused to lower bond for one of the six suspects in the slaying of a Williston-area hobby rancher, saying there is probable cause to believe Jeremy Weyrauch was involved in the death of Jack Sjol.
Defense attorney Nicole Foster sought to reduce Weyrauch’s bond from $1 million to $25,000. She said during a court hearing Friday that Weyrauch passed a polygraph test, and that one of the questions was whether he had shot the 58-year-old Sjol.
Prosecutor Nathan Madden said another of the suspects said during a phone call in prison that Weyrauch pulled the trigger first, and that Weyrauch’s only alibi for the day Sjol died was that he was “doing drugs and stealing stuff.”
Weyrauch faces a murder conspiracy charge.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Authorities say a man suspected of stealing more than $100,000 in nickel from mines in the northern Manitoba region of Canada has been arrested and turned over to U.S. Border Patrol agents.
The Bismarck Police Department and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police helped agents arrest the man, whose name has not been released.
After Bismarck police received a tip that the man was in the city, police in Manitoba sent photographs to be distributed to homeless shelters. The man was arrested Aug. 12 at one of the shelters.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Minot Mayor Curt Zimbelman says he won’t seek re-election next year for a fourth term.
Zimbelman made the announcement in a written statement.
Zimbelman, a banker, led the city through Souris River flooding in 2011 that swamped more than 4,000 homes and businesses in North Dakota’s fourth-largest city.
Zimbelman says “it’s time for new leadership to come in and continue the path of growth and prosperity.”
Zimbelman was a longtime city alderman before he was elected mayor.
WEST FARGO, N.D. (AP) – One of North Dakota’s fastest growing cities is looking at building a $21 to $30 million pool that officials say would rival most facilities in the Upper Midwest.
The base option for the proposed West Fargo community and aquatics center would be a more than 81,000-square-foot facility with two stories.
It would include a large pool deck space, two-court gym, auxiliary gym, locker rooms, kitchen, park district offices and meeting and classroom space. It would have seating for 600 spectators and room for 400 athletes on the pool deck.
An upgrade option would increase the capacity to 1,200 fans.
The proposal would likely need to go before West Fargo voters.
WALHALLA, N.D. (AP) – State and local officials are hosting a fossil dig at the Pembina River Gorge in northeastern North Dakota this week.
Fossils as old as 80 million years were recently found in the area, including those of mosasaurs, giant sea lizards that were fearsome predators. Fossils of sharks and fish also have been found.
The dig is being hosted by the state Geological Survey and state Parks and Recreation Department, along with the Walhalla Economic Development Corp. Members of the public can participate for a fee, if there are any slots available.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – The first piece to a proposed veterans memorial park has arrived in Grand Forks.
It’s a 24,000-pound anchor from a Navy ammunition ship.
The anchor from the USS Kiska was transported on a semi-truck from Texas to North Dakota. It was unloaded by crane last week into a park district storage facility.
The anchor is on loan from the U.S. Maritime Administration. The city will not have to pay for the anchor, but the contract requires that it be kept in good condition.
Other plans for the park include a tank, fighter jet and other military equipment.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – More than 80 anglers from nine states headed out on the Red River in the Grand Forks area for a large catfishing tournament.
Cabela’s King Kat tournament organizer Darrell Van Vactorsays the group always heard about fishing on the Red River and decided it would be a great location.
The event is sponsored by Outdoor Promotions, a non-profit that seeks to promote the outdoors as a way to bring families together. About $6,400 in prize money was up for grabs, and proceeds also go to fund scholarships.
The tournament heads to Nebraska next weekend.
WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – University of North Dakota alumnus and NBA legend Phil Jackson says he supports the retirement of UND’s Fighting Sioux nickname.
Jackson says that “if it’s offensive to people, we need to change it, gracefully.”
Sixty-eight-percent of North Dakota voters last year voted to drop the nickname deemed “hostile and abusive” by the NCAA.
Jackson returned to his hometown of Williston over the weekend for his 50th high school reunion and a baseball tournament.
He graduated from UND in 1967 with degrees in psychology, philosophy and religion. He was the UND’s all-time leading scorer.
Jackson played 13 seasons in the NBA, including 11 with the New York Knicks. As a coach, he led the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers to multiple titles.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – The Chicago White Sox beat the Minnesota Twins 5-2 yesterday. Alexei Ramirez finished a triple shy of the cycle. He homered to lead off the fifth inning and gave Chicago a 4-2 lead. Minnesota went 2 for 18 with runners in scoring position and lost for the fifth time in six games.
BOSTON (AP) – Alex Rodriguez was hit by a pitch four innings before hitting his first homer of the season in the New York Yankees’ 9-6 win over the Red Sox in Boston. Yankees manager Joe Girardi was ejected from the game by plate umpire Brian O’Nora after Red Sox pitcher Ryan Dempster wasn’t warned following the plunking. Brett Gardner hit a go-ahead, bases-loaded triple in the sixth inning for the Yankees, who cut the Red Sox’s lead in the American League East to one game over Tampa Bay.

Hanley Ramirez committed two errors in the ninth inning, the second of which allowed Casper Wells to score the winning run in the Phillies’ 3-2 verdict over the Los Angeles Dodgers. L.A. lost for just the ninth time in its last 51 games overall, and for the second time in its last 21 road games.

NASCAR…
BROOKLYN, Mich. (AP Aug 18, 2013) — Joey Logano boosted his chances of reaching the Chase for the Sprint Cup, winning for the first time this season in a fuel-mileage race at Michigan International Speedway on Sunday.
Logano and Kevin Harvick both breezed past Mark Martin with just over three laps to go in the 400-mile, 200-lap race. Martin had been trying to stretch fuel, but when he faltered, Logano was able to hold off Harvick.
Logano entered the weekend in 16th place in the points standings. After winning the pole Friday, he took Sunday’s race by 1 second over Harvick, who is safely near the top of the standings.
There are three races left before the Chase.
Points leader Jimmie Johnson lasted less than 60 laps before engine trouble knocked him out.

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) -Patrick Reed birdied the second playoff hole to win the Wyndham Championship for his first PGA Tour title, beating Jordan Spieth (SPEETH). Reed and Spieth finished regulation at 14-under 266. Reed closed with a 4-under 66, and Spieth had a 65.
ENDICOTT, N.Y. (AP) – Bart Bryant has his first Champions Tour victory, taking the Dick’s Sporting Goods Open in Endicott, N.Y. Bryant followed his tournament record-tying 10-under 62 with a 72 for a 16-under total, one shot ahead of Russ Cochran and Corey Pavin (PAY’-vihn).
BROOKLINE, Mass. (AP) – Matt Fitzpatrick has won the U.S. Amateur, beating Oliver Goss 4 and 3 in the 36-hole final. Fitzpatrick becomes the first English champion of the tournament since 1911.
Fitzpatrick won when Goss missed a par putt on No. 15 at The Country Club.
PARKER, Colo. (AP) – Europe has retained possession of the Solheim Cup by winning on U.S. soil for the first time. Caroline Hedwall earned the clinching victory in yesterday’s singles matches to become the first player in tournament history to win all five of her matches.

CINCINNATI (AP) – Rafael Nadal and Victoria Azarenka earned titles at the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati. Nadal beat American John Isner 7-6, 7-6 to improve to 53-3 this year and claim back-to-back hardcourt titles for the first time in his career. Azarenka ended Serena Williams’ 14-match winning streak with a 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 comeback victory.
ATHLETICS-WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
MOSCOW (AP) – Usain (yoo-SAYN’) Bolt has done it again, earning his third gold medal of the world championships. The 100- and 200-meter world champ anchored Jamaica to victory in the 4×100-meter relay. It’s the second time Bolt has swept the sprint triple at the worlds, matching the two he’s won at the Olympics.
The United States finished second by 30-hundredths of a second.
In world and national…
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) – New Jersey is about to become the second state to ban so-called conversion therapy, which attempts to turn gay teenagers straight. Gov. Chris Christie plans to sign a bill today barring licensed therapists from using the therapy. California is the other state to ban the practice.
WASHINGTON (AP) – A poll finds deep demographic differences in the details of how parents see teachers, schools and even their own roles in their children’s education. The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research Poll finds that minority and low-income parents are more likely to see serious problems than those who are affluent or white. Also, a majority of Hispanic and black parents think they have a lot of influence over their child’s education. Only 34 percent of white parents think that.
CAIRO (AP) – One toppled Egyptian president is about to become a free man, even as supporters of another continue the drumbeat for his return. Egyptian judiciary officials say former President Hosni Mubarak could be freed this week after a court ordered his release. The Islamist Muslim Brotherhood continues to demand the reinstatement of Mohammed Morsi amid violence that has killed hundreds.
BAGHDAD (AP) – Iraq’s northern self-ruled Kurdish region is seeing an unusual spike in refuges from Syria. The U.N. refugee agency says that around 30,000 Syrians have fled to the region since Thursday. Syrian refugees in the Kurdish region now number about 195,000.
LONDON (AP) – A British lawmaker is demanding answers about the airport detention of the partner of a journalist writing about U.S. snooping. Keith Vaz, the chairman of the Home Affairs Select Committee, said that he wants to know why police held David Miranda, the partner of Guardian journalist Glenn Greenwald, who got classified material from Edward Snowden. Miranda was held for nearly nine hours.
