Jamestown (UJ) After giving up three runs in the top of the first, the University of Jamestown baseball team scored the final seven runs of the game to defeat Mayville State University 7-3 at Jack Brown Stadium Monday evening. 

Alan Larocque’s two-run double and and RBI single by Marcus Hughes accounted for the Comet runs against Jimmie starter Payson Mills (SR/Blackfoot, ID).

Chase Burke (SO/Minot, ND) homered to lead off the home half of the first inning, then Jamestown would take the lead in the bottom of the second. Kendall Yackley (SR/Lynnwood, WA) drew a walk and Jordan Singleton (SO/East Wenatchee, WA) followed with a home run to right center to make it 3-3. Triston Madison (SO/Post Falls, ID) then singled, and courtesy runner Alex Alva (SO/Littleton, CO) moved up a base after a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Reece McKenzie (SO/Gresham, OR) reached on an error by shortstop Ricky Marquez that allowed Alva to cross the plate.

In the bottom of the fourth Xander Orejudos (SR/Ellensburg, WA) singled up the middle to score Ben Patton (FR/Bismarck, ND) to push the lead to 5-3, then Jamestown added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth. McKenzie hit a sacrifice fly to score Troy Berg (FR/Dickinson, ND) and Orejudos singled in Burke for a 7-3 edge.

Luke Zimmer (FR/Velva, ND) (1-0) came on in relief in the second and pitched four scoreless innings, striking out five and allowing only one hit. Hayden Brown (JR/Buckeye, AZ) allowed a leadoff walk in the top of the ninth but then struck out the side to record his second save. Jimmie relievers did not allow a run over the final eight innings while striking out nine.

Singleton, Madison, and Orejudos all went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead UJ. Yackley, Burke, McKenzie, Orejudos, and Trent Peters (SO/Niverville, MB, Canada) each stole a base.

Jamestown improves to 3-1 and will host Dickinson State (N.D.) University in a single nine-inning game beginning at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
