Sherrill R. Schmitt, 71, of Jamestown, ND, passed away peacefully Wednesday afternoon, November 9, 2022 at her home.
Sherrill Rae Fransen was born November 20, 1950, the daughter of Raymond and Marlys Fransen. She grew up in Williston, ND and graduated from high school in 1968. Sherrill earned an AA degree from UND – Williston in 1970 and a BS degree in Elementary Education in 1972. She taught in Belcourt at Turtle Mountain Elementary School Special Ed. For 2 years, and then earned her Master’s degree in Learning Disabilities from Minot State University in 1975. Sherrill moved to Jamestown in 1976 to work for the Stutsman County Special Education Unit and Buffalo Valley Special Education Unit, serving at itinerate LPD teacher in Pingree, Kensal, Courtenay, Wimbledon, and Spiritwood schools.
Sherrill married James W. Schmitt in Las Vegas, NV on January 21, 1978 and they made their home in Jamestown. She enjoyed spending time with family, especially her husband, and sending them birthday cards. Sherrill also enjoyed traveling to casinos and loved cooking, quilting, taking care of flowers, gardening, working in the yard, reading cooking magazines, and teaching. She devoted her time and energy to helping the students be the best they could be.
Sherrill is survived by her husband, James Schmitt; brothers: Larry (Janet) Fransen and James (Yolanda) Fransen; nieces and nephews: Michael Fransen, children Andrew (Nikki) and Alexander (fiancé Maddy). David Fransen (Laura) Vanessa, Sirena, and Levana. Amber McCauley (fiancé Darin Gabriel) Graycen. Kimberly Graff(Jordan) Amalya and Brielle. Jamie Fransen; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Memorial Service – 11:00 a.m., Friday, November 11, 2022 at Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown.
