VALLEY CITY, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota college student who went
missing for nearly a week before turning up in Arizona says she had
a bout of amnesia and didn’t know who she was.
Twenty-two-year-old Valley City State University student Amber
Glatt vanished on the Fourth of July, prompting aerial searches.
She contacted her mother five days later from the Grand Canyon. Her
mother says Glatt has had recurring amnesia since suffering a head
injury years ago.
Glatt says after she lost
her memory she met a man in a bar who let her tag along on his trip
to the Grand Canyon. She says the man eventually saw online that
she’d been reported missing and alerted her.
Glatt says she regained most of her memory on Wednesday.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A northeastern North Dakota man has lost
an appeal of his murder conviction for beating his brother to death
two years ago.
Rodney Chisholm of Manvel claimed he was defending himself when
he hit his brother, Donald Chisholm, with an iron pipe and put a
hose clamp around his neck.
At his trial, Rodney Chisholm said his brother had been
threatening to shoot him over a property dispute.
Rodney Chisholm’s lawyer says the trial judge should have
allowed testimony about an incident where Donald Chisholm allegedly
threatened Rodney Chisholm with a pistol and shotgun.
The judge wouldn’t allow testimony about the incident because it
happened at least 10 years before Donald Chisholm was killed.
The Supreme Court on Thursday unanimously upheld the judge’s
decision and the jury’s murder verdict.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s Supreme Court has affirmed
a Minot woman’s murder sentence in the beating death of her
19-month-old boy.
The toddler’s skull and jaw were broken and he was covered with
bruises when he died in February 2011.
Cassondra Ayala pleaded guilty to murder in the child’s death.
Northwest District Judge Doug Mattson ordered the woman to serve 22
years in prison.
In her Supreme Court appeal, Ayala claimed Mattson didn’t pay
enough attention to her psychological problems when he was deciding
her sentence.
The high court affirmed Mattson’s sentence in a one-paragraph
order on Thursday.
Ayala’s boyfriend, Anthony Robinson, also pleaded guilty to
murder in the case. Robinson was ordered to serve 27 years in
prison.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s Supreme Court has ruled a
bicycle counts as a vehicle when it comes to enforcing drunken
driving laws. Matthew Johnston of Lincoln was arrested last year
after he slammed his bike into a pickup truck. His lawyer
unsuccessfully argued that since a bicycle moves under human power,
it isn’t considered a vehicle.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The trial for a former Fargo surgeon accused
of drugging and raping his wife likely will begin in November.
Judge Douglas Herman on Wednesday set a Nov. 5 trial date for Jon Norberg, who is charged in Cass County District Court with gross sexual imposition
and reckless endangerment.
Norberg is accused of having sex with his wife, Alonna Norberg,
while she was on propofol, a powerful sedative.
The Associated Press typically does not identify victims of sex
crimes but Alonna Norberg has spoken publicly, once to deny her
husband’s claims she agreed to the medication as part of treatment
for a debilitating disease.
Defense attorney Robert Hoy requested the later date because he
is receiving discovery information and waiting for prosecutors to
release expert testimony.

POWELL, Wyo. (AP) – A Utah man suspected of holding up banks in
four states after being furloughed from jail will be brought to
Wyoming to face charges.
Joshua Beckstead was arrested on July 4th in North Dakota on a

Cheyenne, Wyoming.
The 32-year-old waived
his right to extradition hearings, clearing the way for his transfer.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s Board of Higher Education
has approved its proposed budget for the next two years. Now board
members will see how the Legislature responds next year.
Board members on Thursday endorsed asking for a 16 percent
general fund spending increase for the next two years.
That adds up to almost $700 million for North Dakota’s 11 public
colleges. The figure includes North Dakota State University’s
extension service and agricultural research stations.
Board members also want 14 building and renovation projects.
They would cost $146 million.

The presidents of most of North Dakota’s 11 public colleges are getting 3 percent pay increases.
The exception is Williston State College. Williston President
Ray Nadolny (nah-DOL’-nee) got a 6 percent raise. He’s now making
almost $168,000 a year.
Among the presidents, the University of North Dakota’s Robert
Kelley has the biggest salary. He’s making $340,000 with the raise.
Nadolny’s salary is the smallest, even with the 6 percent raise.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Congressman Rick Berg says is asking House leaders to bring the 2012 Farm Bill up for a vote by the full chamber as quickly as possible. champion.
Helling pitched 13 years for five teams. He won 20 games with
the Texas Rangers in 1998, and won two World Series rings with the
Florida Marlins.

Jamestown, ND — (KCSi-T.V Sports Jul 13, 2012) — Jamestown College announces that Nick Becker has been named the head women’s soccer coach.
Becker has 12 years of experience and education in management, development, and leadership of a team. He was also part of the South Dakota State coaching staff and was a graduate assistant for the Northern State University Women’s Soccer Program where he assisted the head coach in planning, developing and promoting the program as well as helping with practice and recruitment and learning the conference rules and procedures.
“Coach Becker is young but has been well-mentored,” said Lawrie Paulson, Jamestown College Director of Athletics. “He has an understanding of who we are and what we are about as a school. I think he will do an excellent job leading our women’s team, and I think this hire will end up helping both soccer programs move forward.”

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – The heat wave is taking its toll on fish in
the Upper Midwest. High water temperatures and low oxygen levels
have combined to kill thousands of fish in Minnesota, the Dakotas
and Wisconsin.
Thousands of northern pike died in several shallow southern
Minnesota lakes since last week. Large numbers of northerns have
also died in shallow southern Wisconsin lakes, as well as in the
James River in southeast North Dakota and northeast South Dakota
this past week.
Northerns are vulnerable because they’re better suited to cooler
temperatures and can’t seek refuge in the depths when lakes and
streams are less than 6 feet deep.
While the region’s most popular fishing lakes have been spared,
officials warn that additional die-offs are possible as the summer
progresses.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – State and federal wildlife officials have completed stocking nearly 10 million walleye fingerlings in 113 North Dakota lakes.
Jerry Weigel (WY’-guhl) with the state Game and Fish Department says 8.7 million fingerlings came from the Garrison Dam National Fish Hatchery and 1.1 million came from the Valley City National Fish Hatchery.
Notable stockings included 4 million fingerlings in Lake Sakakawea and more than half a million in Stump Lake.
Fisheries crews will check on survival rates and natural reproduction in the fall.

torn cartilage in his left knee and will miss the Olympics.

surgery but should be ready for their training camp.
Anthony Davis was added to the U.S. roster and was in uniform
for Thursday’s opening exhibition game against a Dominican Republic
team led by his college coach, John Calipari of Kentucky. Davis
shot 3-for-4 and scored nine points as the Americans thumped the
Dominicans 113-59.

finishing about one minute clear of the runner-up.

nine-hole record with a 28 and finished at 5-under 65 to take the
first-round lead at the U.S. Senior Open.

tie atop the leaderboard, but a two-stroke penalty pushed him back
to the pack after completing his first round. Bernhard Langer and
Lance Ten Broeck share second at minus-4.

In world and national news…

NEW YORK (AP) – JPMorgan Chase says its surprise trading loss
has grown to $4.4 billion. That’s more than double the bank’s
original estimate of $2 billion. CEO Jamie Dimon (DY’-muhn) is
telling Wall Street analysts that the bank has closed the division
responsible for the bad trade and “significantly reduced” its
risk.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) – Joe Paterno’s motto for the Penn State
football program he led for more than six decades was “success
with honor.” But the chairwoman of the university’s board of
trustees says Paterno’s “excellent service is now marred” by the
scandal involving one of his long time assistants. Yesterday,
former FBI Director Louis Freeh (LOO’-ee free) released a 267-page
report that found Paterno and other top Penn State officials
covered up Jerry Sandusky’s sexual abuse of children to avoid bad
publicity.

BEIRUT (AP) – International envoy Kofi Annan (KOH’-fee AN’-nan)
says he is “shocked and appalled” by the latest reports of a
massacre in Syria. Activists have posted videos they say show at
least 17 people killed in government shelling of a farming village
in central Syria. They say a total of more than 200 people may have
been killed in the incident. Annan says the killings violate the
government’s commitment to cease the use of heavy weapons in
population centers.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – A woman who says she’s part of the Occupy
movement is telling The Los Angeles Times that protesters at last
night’s Art Walk in downtown were demonstrating their support for

that went on for about three hours and left one officer injured.

SANFORD, Fla. (AP) – A Florida woman has been rescued after
spending three days stuck in her car in a water-filled ditch. The
