Sylvia Martin, 68, passed away on December 8, 2022, in her home north of Pettibone, ND, surrounded by her family after a long, courageous battle with cancer.

Sylvia was born on August 28, 1954, to Edward and Viona (Mittleider) Zimmerman in Bismarck, ND. She lived in Tappen, ND and then moved to Jamestown, ND. Sylvia married Ronald Martin on November 18, 1977, and they just celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary together with many friends and family present. They had two children, Sheri and Dawn, and lived on a farm near Pettibone their entire marriage. Sylvia could be found helping with the farm animals, in the field or running errands. She also worked outside the farm at the school in Pettibone and was a caregiver for a local community member. Sylvia enjoyed gardening and her flowerbed. Her favorite time of the year was when the flower bed was in full bloom.

Sylvia was active in the Pettibone community, loving her time spent teaching Sunday School, being on the Community Building Board, 4-H leader, township board member, and Farmers’ Union Board for many years. She also enjoyed crafting and could be found at many local craft shows through the years.

Sylvia fought her battle with cancer for many years, showing courage and strength, and being an inspiration for all her family and friends. She refused to give up the fight against cancer even when it was at its worst. Sylvia was a friends to everyone she met and held every friendship dear to her heart. Her memory will be held onto by so many people.

Sylvia is survived by her husband, Ron; daughters, Sheri (Jim Morlock) and Dawn Martin; mother, Viona Zimmerman; sister, Kathy Meuller; and brother, Jerome (Lynn) Zimmerman. She also leaves behind several nieces and nephews, and her beloved housecats (Patches, Fluffy, Tipper and Johnny).

She was preceded in death by her father, Edward Zimmerman; sister, Laura Zimmerman; grandparents; and her mother and father-in-law, Leondina and Paul Martin.

Funeral Service – 10:30 a.m., Monday, December 12, 2022 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Pettibone, ND withy Rev. Robert Hill officiating.

Visitation – One hour before the service at the church.

Burial – Petersville Cemetery, Pettibone, ND.
