Jamestown, ND (KCSi- T.V. News Aug 22, 2012) — A Southeast District Court Jury, of eight women and four men, in Jamestown Wednesday began deliberation in the trial of Leron Howard.

Not reaching a verdict Wednesday, the jurors recessed just before 5-p.m., and will continue deliberations, on Thursday morning.

Howard is charged with murder and criminal conspiracy in the death of Abdi Ali Ahmed on April 30, 2011.

Howard’s court appointed defense attorney, Steve Mottinger, asked the jury to convict Howard of manslaughter during closing arguments.

If they find Howard not guilty of murder they would then consider the lesser included charge of manslaughter.

Abdi Ali Ahmed’s body was found in a road ditch near Spiritwood, on April 30, 2011.

An autopsy revealed Ahmed died of blunt force trauma to the head and he was also stabbed twice in the abdomen.

On the stand Tuesday, Howard admitted to striking Ahmed twice during an altercation during the early morning hours of April 30, 2011.

Murder and criminal conspiracy are Class AA felonies punishable by life in prison without parole.

Manslaughter is a Class B felony punishable by 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Jury selection in the case began August 14, 2012 with testimony beginning on August 15, 2012.

Closing arguments were heard in the case Tuesday.

The co-defendant on the case, Janelle Cave of Jamestown was found guilty, in a jury trial in Jamestown, in February of 2012, of manslaughter, and conspiracy, in the death of Ahmed.

She is appealing her conviction in the North Dakota Supreme Court.

Jamestown, ND (KCSi T.V. News)  –  On August 22nd, 2012 at approximately 4:45 pm, a NDHP Trooper located a reported reckless driver traveling eastbound on I-94.

The vehicle was a silver, 1999 Hyundai Sonnata, which was reported by other motorists as traveling at a high rate of speed and weaving on the road way from the ditch to the median of the eastbound roadway.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Fargo police are making arrests in connection
with an armed robbery at a Chinese restaurant.

Authorities say a 15-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl are in
custody in the holdup Friday at the Giant Panda, and they
anticipate a 17-year-old boy also will be referred to juvenile
court.
Police say two people wielding a shotgun entered the restaurant
about 9:30 p.m. and took an undisclosed amount of money from a cash
register. They fled in a vehicle waiting outside.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota woman who tried to flee
police while driving drunk with two teenage passengers in her
vehicle says she will plead guilty in federal court.
Kristal Good Bird is charged with child abuse in Indian country.
Authorities say she was speeding on Main Street of New Town on May
21 and crashed her vehicle into a gas pump while trying to elude
authorities.
Police say a 14-year-old passenger was injured in the crash and
hospitalized overnight for observation.
Good Bird faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison.

MANDAN, N.D. (AP) – A former female teacher in the southwest
North Dakota town of Hebron is on trial for alleged sex crimes
involving male students.
Jennifer Schultz has pleaded not guilty to felony sexual assault
and two misdemeanors – corrupting minors and giving them alcohol.
Authorities allege that she drank vodka with four boys in her home
in October 2011, had sex with one of them and groped another.
The boys were between 16 and 18 years of age. Prosecutor Jackson
Lofgren told jurors in opening statements that Schultz’s alleged
actions went from being inappropriate to being illegal.

Defense attorney Stormy Vickers says there was no sexual contact
between Schultz and the students.
Schultz resigned her teaching position during the investigation.

HUDSON, Wis. (AP) – The man accused of killing his three young
daughters in River Falls is facing an additional charge.
Prosecutors have filed an attempted arson charge against Aaron
Schaffhausen.

The 35-year-old father is already facing three counts
of first-degree intentional homicide. Eleven-year-old Amara,
9-year-old Sophie and 5-year-old Cecilia Schaffhausen were killed
July 10 in the home they shared with their mother, Schaffhausen’s
ex-wife.
The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports an investigator smelled gas
in the basement of the River Falls home and found a gas container
had been tipped over.
The Minot, N.D., construction worker is being held in the St.
Croix (kroy) County Jail on $2 million cash bond. An arraignment
hearing is scheduled for Aug. 28.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s two largest universities set
enrollment records during the first day of fall semester classes.
North Dakota State in Fargo had 14,319 students enrolled
Tuesday, an increase of about half a percent over the year.

The University of North Dakota in Grand Forks had 14,807 students, up
about 5 percent.

The official fall enrollment won’t be tallied at either
university until the fourth week of classes.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota lawmakers are supporting big
increases in some of the state’s highway speeding fines.
North Dakota has some of the region’s lowest fines for speeders.

They’re also hard for law officers to calculate without using a
chart.
The Legislature’s Transportation Committee on Wednesday endorsed
raising the fines and making them easier to figure.
Now, someone who’s caught driving 65 mph on a 55 mph road is
fined $10. Under the new bill, the fine would be $50.
Someone going 80 mph on North Dakota’s interstate highways would
be fined $50, instead of $25.
The bill would also allow cities to increase their speeding
penalties.
Fargo state Rep. Ed Gruchalla and assistant West Fargo police
chief Mike Reitan say the higher fines will be a deterrent to
highway leadfoots.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Dakotas-based Sanford Health is offering $15,000 bonuses to recruit registered nurses in Fargo to address a shortage of experienced nurses.

The bonuses are for nurses who have at least two years of experience and commit to stay at least three years.

Sanford says the unusual incentive has helped recruit about two dozen nurses.

Carla Hansen, Sanford’s chief nursing executive in Fargo, says the hospital is seeing more patients, and that experienced nurses are needed more because of the increasingly sophisticated technology used in health care.

In sports…

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – University of North Dakota athletic
director Brian Faison (FAY’-zawn) has received a two-year contract
extension.
School officials say Faison is signed through June 2017. Terms
of the deal were not announced.
This year is Faison’s fifth at the helm of UND athletics.

He has led the school through the transition to the NCAA Division I level,
which included entrance into the Big Sky Conference.
Prior to joining UND, Faison served as special assistant to the
president for four years and athletic director for five years at
New Mexico State University.
Faison is UND’s 15th athletic director.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – A judge in Grand Forks has thrown out
the last felony charges stemming from an investigation into
suspected steroid possession by three former University of North
Dakota football players.
Judge Joel Medd on Monday dismissed charges against 23-year-old
Justin Belotti, who finished his senior season last fall.
Two other players also were accused of possessing steroids and
amphetamines. Kenneth Watkins Jr. pleaded guilty in March to
misdemeanor marijuana charges and served 10 days in jail.

Medd earlier this month dismissed charges against Jon Goertz, and also
those filed against Richard McConn, who wasn’t on the UND team.
Attorneys for the men who had their cases dismissed successfully
argued that there were problems with a police search of the house
where the men lived.

In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) – Federal Reserve officials have been speaking
with increased urgency about the need to provide more help for a
weak U.S. economy.

That’s according to the minutes of their most recent meeting three weeks ago.

The minutes reveal that many members felt further support would be needed “fairly soon” unless the economy improved significantly. The minutes didn’t say what steps might be taken.

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. (AP) – President Barack Obama says Mitt
Romney’s spending cuts would cripple schools even as his tax cuts
would shower more breaks on millionaires.

And he says Romney’s running mate, Congressman Paul Ryan, has already helped thwart efforts to rehire teachers laid off during the recession.

In a rally at a high school in North Las Vegas, Nev., Obama said GOP
limits on education spending are “unfair to our kids” and
“foolish for our future.”

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – Differences between Mitt Romney and Paul
Ryan on abortion and other hot-button social issues are on display.

For one thing, Ryan opposes abortion in cases of rape and
incest, while Romney would allow it in those cases, and if it would
save the mother’s life.

But Ryan is brushing aside the differences, telling a Pennsylvania TV station that if the Republican ticket wins in November, Romney will be the one setting policy.

ELLICOTT CITY, Md. (AP) – A federal investigator says a coal
train that derailed in Maryland was going the authorized speed of
25 miles per hour with the engineer-in-training at the controls.
Two 19-year-old college students were killed around midnight Monday
while sitting on a rail bridge in the historic section of Ellicott
City as the train passed a few feet behind them.

Their bodies were found buried in spilled coal.

LONDON (AP) – The photos that have emerged of Britain’s Prince
Harry cavorting in the nude with an unidentified woman in a VIP
suite in Las Vegas last week apparently aren’t doing any harm to
his image back home.

A construction worker in London who was asked if Harry did anything wrong seemed offended by the question — and added, “I’d be proud of him if he were my son.”

And the editor of a magazine for royal-watchers says Harry’s party-boy image is part of what people like about him.

But she says he might get a talking-to from his dad, Prince Charles.
