SIOUX CENTER, Iowa- (UJ) https://www.jimmiepride.com/article/6901Trailing fifth-ranked Dordt University by seven points early in the fourth quarter, the Jimmie women’s basketball team rallied to tie the Defenders with 27 seconds left, but a pair of free throws ended up being the difference as Dordt took a 72-70 win Saturday afternoon.

Jamestown fell behind 20-13 after the first quarter, but used nine points from Kia Tower (SR/Bigfork, MN) and eight more by Hannah DeMars (SR/Grand Rapids, MN) to outscore Dordt 29-15 in the second for a 42-35 halftime lead.

DeMars put the Jimmies up by eight at the 6:04 mark of the third, matching their largest lead of the game. Dordt responded with the next eight points and 14 of the final 17 of the quarter to go up 55-52 entering the fourth.

Tower converted a three-point play and DeMars made a pair of free throws in a 5-0 run that tied the game at 70. With three seconds left, Faith Van Holland sank a pair of free throws for the eventual winning points.

DeMars led UJ with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Tower had 18 points, Audrey Rodakowski (JR/Dickinson, ND) 11, and Kate Cordes (FR/Shakopee, MN) finished 10 points off the bench. Karly Gustafson paced Dordt with 19 points and 10 rebounds, one of three Defenders in double figures.

Jamestown (12-4, 7-3 GPAC) returns home to host No. 22 Briar Cliff (Iowa) University Wednesday at 6 p.m.

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa (UJ) https://www.jimmiepride.com/article/6902 Will Cordes (JR/Shakopee, MN) scored a career-best 35 points Saturday to help the ninth-ranked Jimmie men’s basketball team to a 93-90 win over Dordt University.

Twenty-nine points was the previous high for Cordes, which he achieved twice in the 2021-22 season.

In his second game after sitting out the previous five due to injury, Cordes was a perfect 5-for-5 from three-point range on the way to 19 first-half points. UJ shot 58 percent from the field overall and connected on 12-of-21 threes in the first 20 minutes.

While Jamestown was doing their damage from the outside, the Defenders went to work on the inside. Dordt hit on 66 percent of their first-half shots, making 16 of 23 tries inside the arc.That included a 9-for-11 effort from Jacob Vis, who had 24 points at the break.

Cordes put the Jimmies up by 10 early in the second half, but Dordt cut the lead to three just 69 seconds later. The Defenders would take the lead with 5:34 to play on a Luke Rankin bucket.

The game featured three ties and six lead changes before Cordes gave Jamestown an 89-87 with 50 seconds left.

All five UJ starters finished in double figures. Marc Kjos (SR/Lake City, MN) had 14 points and six assists, Reid Gastner (SO/Lake City, MN) added 13 points and nine rebounds, and Cole Woodford (JR/Redwood Falls, MN) and Mason Walters (SR/Jamestown, ND) each had 11.

Vis matched Cordes with 35 points, and Bryce Coppock (16) and Rankin (12) also reached double digits.

Jamestown (13-3, 5-3 GPAC) hosts Briar Cliff Wednesday at 7:45 p.m.

(UJ) Three second-period goals helped the eighth-ranked Jimmie hockey team to a 5-0 win over Colorado State University Saturday afternoon at Wilson Arena.

Brandon Weare (FR/Calgary, Alberta) made 32 saves for his fourth shutout of the season and has allowed just four goals in his last seven starts.

Alek Erichuk’s unassisted goal at 7:06 of the first was the only score in the first period as the Jimmies outshot the Rams 15-8.

Jake Huculak (JR/Jasper, Alberta) scored shorthanded at 3:48 of the second, assisted by Reid Wilson (JR/Castlegar, British Columbia), to double UJ’s lead. Jordon Kromm (JR/Calgary, Alberta) made it 3-0 on assists from Wilson and Gage Thompson (SR/Valley City, N.D.) at 11:20, then at 12:30, Venne rounded out the second period scoring with assists by Jordan Baranesky (FR/Red Lake, Ontario) and Zane MacDonald (SR/Minnedosa, Manitoba).

Venne’s power play goal at 7:40 of the third made it 5-0. Greg Susinski (JR/Calgary, Alberta) and Brad Fortin (FR/Langley, British Columbia) got credit for the assists.

Shots were 35-32 in favor of Jamestown, who also went 1-for-3 on the power play and successfully killed off five penalties.

The two teams finish the weekend series Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
