On January 9, 2023, we lost a beautiful Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Sister and Friend, Arlene Marie Altringer, but we gained an angel who will always look over us.

She was born on April 27th, 1939 to Frank and Leona (Rutherford) Japel on their family farm south of Tower City, ND. Arlene graduated from Tower City High School in 1957. She then went on to attend Valley City State Teachers College and graduated in 1959.

After graduation, she moved to Wimbledon, ND and began teaching third grade. There, she met the love of her life Don Altringer. They were married on June 8th, 1962, in Oriska, ND. Don and Arlene made their home in Jamestown, ND and lived in the area for their entire married life. They were blessed to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on June 8th, 2022.

Following her teaching career, Arlene stayed home caring for her two beautiful sons and helping Don with the family business. She was also a Para at St. John’s Academy for several years. Arlene then began her career at the YMCA as a teacher and went on to run the front desk for 26 years until her retirement in 2005.

Arlene loved talking with people, helping others and always making sure those around her felt welcome. Arlene was an active member of the St. James Basilica, St. John’s Circle and volunteered with the St. James Tabernacle Society. She also loved attending many of her grandchildren’s school events and activities, baking delicious treats, enjoyed playing a good game of pinochle, going to the movies and embroidering.
