MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (UJ) — The 13th-ranked Jimmie women’s hockey team recorded its first conference road sweep with a pair of wins over No. 15 University of Minnesota on Friday and Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Friday’s game saw the Gophers get on the board first as Izzy Parenteau scored at the 4:57 mark of period one for a 1-0 lead.
  • Annika Braun drew the Jimmies level with her goal at 10:18 of the first, assisted by Mackenzie Couling and Kelsey Amick.
  • Neither team scored in the second period, although the Jimmies went on the power play three times and Minnesota twice.
  • Emma Strouse‘s goal at 1:56 of the third period broke the 1-1 tie, and was the first of four Jamestown tallies in a span of 8:07.
  • Bethany Wielgosh, from Crystal Wale and Rylee Gee, made it 3-1 at 12:51.
  • Wale extended the lead to 4-1 with an unassisted goal at 11:30.
  • Gee notched the final UJ goal at 9:57 on an assist from Wielgosh.
  • Erica Lieske got Minnesota’s second goal with 12 seconds left as the game ended 5-2.
  • Shots were 22-13 in favor of Jamestown.
  • Makenzie Gibson made 11 saves in goal for the Jimmies.
  • Annika Braun and Rylee Gee had first-period goals on Saturday as UJ led 2-0 after one.
  • Minnesota scored four times in the second to go back in front 4-2 with 5:25 left before the second intermission.
  • Bethany Wielgosh brought Jamestown within 4-3 on a power play goal at 18:49 of the second. The Jimmies had gone 25 straight power play chances without a goal.
  • The Gophers retook a two-goal lead at 4:18 of the of third, then scored again at 9:03 for a 6-3 advantage.
  • Samantha Muller made it 6-4 with UJ’s second power play goal of the game at the 11:41 mark.
  • The Jimmies capitalized on two power play opportunities inside the final minute.
  • Braun’s second of the game cut the deficit to 6-5 with 48 seconds left, and Emma Strouse tied the game 24 seconds later with Jamestown’s fourth power play goal.
  • Crystal Wale picked up her second game-winning overtime goal of the season, scoring 19 seconds into the extra period to complete the Jimmie comeback.
  • Wielgosh had three assists and Wale finished with two.
  • Shots were 32-24 Jamestown.
  • Lilah Drew had 18 saves for UJ.

HASTINGS, Neb. (UJ)The Jimmie women’s basketball team won its third straight game Saturday afternoon, defeating Hastings College 68-62 at Lynn Farrell Arena

THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Six lead changes and one tie occurred in the first 5:15 of the game before Sarah Lenz put Jamestown in front for good with a three-pointer at the 5:04 mark.
  • UJ built up a six-point lead before Hastings closed the quarter on a 5-0 run to make it 19-18.
  • The Jimmies continued to lead by as many as six after baskets by Kate Busek and Hannah DeMars with just over five minutes left in the half.
  • The Broncos trimmed the lead to two following a Mariyah Avila basket with 1:48 left, then the teams traded three-pointers (Kia Tower and Lenz for UJ; Avila for Hastings) to close out the half with Jamestown leading 36-34.
  • Busek and Lenz each hit from long distance as part of an 8-1 run to start the third quarter as the Jimmies went up 44-35 at the 6:07 mark.
  • Hastings got as close as five (49-44) with 2:11 left in the third, but a three-point play from DeMars and a three-pointer by Kate Cordes helped UJ go ahead by 10 at the 1:14 mark.
  • The fourth quarter opened with Hastings on a 5-0 run to get with 55-52, but Jamestown responded with a 7-0 run to go back in front by double digits (62-52) with 6:14 to play. The lead stayed between 7 and 10 points until Alyssa Baker made a three with nine seconds left, and the game ended 68-62.

JAMESTOWN GAME NOTES

  • The Jimmies shot 42.1 percent (24-of-57) from the floor, including 32.3 percent (10-of-31) from three-point range.
  • DeMars filled the stat sheet with 17 points, 15 rebounds, five assists, and three steals.
  • Tower scored 15 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and dished out six assists.
  • Lenz and Audrey Rodakowski each finished with nine points.

HASTINGS GAME NOTES

  • The Broncos shot 37.5 percent (21-of-56) from the floor, including 30.8 percent (8-of-26) from three-point range.
  • Avila had 14 points, including four three-pointers, while Allison Bauer finished with 11 and Baker had 10.
  • Hastings lost to the Jimmies for the third time in their last four meetings.

HASTINGS, Neb. (https://www.jimmiepride.com/article/6933 (UJ)– Mason Walters and Will Cordes combined for 43 points to help lead the 14th-ranked Jimmie men’s basketball team to a 71-57 win over Hastings College Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Walters (two), Colby Vazquez, and Cordes all hit three-pointers in a 12-1 run that turned a 7-5 Hastings lead into a 17-8 edge for the Jimmies.
  • After Tyrique McMurrin converted a three-point play to make it a six-point lead (28-22) with 4:33 to play, the Jimmies went on a 5-0 run and finished the half with 12 of the final 14 for a 40-24 lead at the break.
  • Seven of UJ’s 14 first-half field goals were threes, including two each from Walters and Cordes.
  • Cole Woodford‘s basket to start the second half began a 7-0 run that ballooned Jamestown’s lead to 47-24 and forcing a Hastings timeout at the 16:56 mark.
  • Hastings would get no closer than 15 points while the Jimmies eventually pushed their advantage to 27 on two different occasions.
  • A dunk by Jimmy Llinas at the 5:59 mark made it 71-44, but the Broncos held UJ scoreless for the remainder of the contest, finishing on a 13-0 run.

JAMESTOWN GAME NOTES

  • The Jimmies shot 46.4 percent (26-of-56) from the field, including 40 percent (12-of-30) from three.
  • Walters had 23 points, six rebounds, four assists, and two steals to lead the Jimmies.
  • Cordes finished with 20 points and made 6-of-9 three-point attempts.
  • Cooper Olson grabbed six rebounds and Cole Woodford also passed out four assists.
  • UJ is 10-1 against Hastings since joining the GPAC.

HASTINGS GAME NOTES

  • Hastings shot 45.8 percent (22-of-48) from the field, including 44.4 percent (4-of-9) from three.
  • Danilo Matovic paced the Broncos with 21 points and seven rebounds.
  • Reggie Thomas was also in double figures with 11 points.
  • The Broncos lost for the fourth time in their last five games.
