(Wash Commanders) The Washington Commanders have released Carson Wentz.
Wentz, who was acquired by the Commanders through a trade with the Indianapolis Colts last offseason, played in eight games with seven starts and completed 62.3% of his passes for 1,755 yards and 11 touchdowns with nine interceptions.
Wentz started the first six games of the 2022 season and was placed on Injured Reserve after breaking his finger against the Chicago Bears. He returned to action in Week 16 against the San Francisco 49ers.
The Commanders believed that Wentz could use his veteran experience to push Washington to the playoffs, but after missing over half the season with his injury, those hopes ultimately did not pan out.
The move to release Wentz leaves Sam Howell and Taylor Heinicke as the only quarterbacks currently on the active roster. Heinicke is set to be a free agent in March.
Bobby McCain joined the Commanders in 2021 and appeared in 34 games with 32 starts. During that time, McCain recorded 139 tackles with four interceptions.
