Jamestown, ND (KCSi- T.V. News Aug 22, 2012) — A Southeast District Court Jury, of eight women and four men, in Jamestown Wednesday began deliberation in the trial of Leron Howard.

Not reaching a verdict Wednesday, the jurors recessed just before 5-p.m., and will continue deliberations, on Thursday morning.

Howard is charged with murder and criminal conspiracy in the death of Abdi Ali Ahmed on April 30, 2011.

Howard’s court appointed defense attorney, Steve Mottinger, asked the jury to convict Howard of manslaughter during closing arguments.

Stutsman County State’s Attorney, Fritz Fremgen, said the case fits the definition of murder.

If they find Howard not guilty of murder they would then consider the lesser included charge of manslaughter.

Abdi Ali Ahmed’s body was found in a road ditch near Spiritwood, on April 30, 2011.

From Gov. Dalrymple’s Office

BISMARCK, N.D. – (Aug 22, 2012) – Gov. Jack Dalrymple late Tuesday toured the John Deere manufacturing plant in Valley City where company officials are in the process of hiring about 65 additional workers to meet the plant’s production workload.

The John Deere Valley City Seeding Group currently employs about 320 people.

Plant Manager David Bradford and other John Deere employees led Dalrymple and North Dakota Commerce Commissioner Al Anderson on a tour of the plant which manufactures crop seeders and tillage equipment.

Dalrymple said, “I was impressed with the plant’s efficiency, the quality of its workforce and with John Deere’s commitment to the community.

John Deere’s Valley City plant is a good example of the innovation and expertise that continues to drive our state’s manufacturing growth while other states are experiencing declines in this important economic sector.”

Manufacturing accounts for about 10 percent of North Dakota’s gross domestic product and directly employs about six percent of the state’s workforce.

Strong market growth, both domestically and internationally, have contributed to North Dakota’s healthy manufacturing economy.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Fargo police are making arrests in connection with an armed robbery at a Chinese restaurant.

MANDAN, N.D. (AP) – A jury has found a former female teacher in
the southwest North Dakota town of Hebron not guilty of sexually
assaulting two students.

She was found guilty of distributing alcohol to minors.
The state dropped a charge of soliciting a minor.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota lawmakers are supporting big increases in some of the state’s highway speeding fines.

North Dakota has some of the region’s lowest fines for speeders. They’re also hard for law officers to calculate without using a chart.

The Legislature’s Transportation Committee on Wednesday endorsed raising the fines and making them easier to figure.

Now, someone who’s caught driving 65 on a 55 mile per hour road is fined $10. Under the new bill, the fine would be $50.

Someone going 80 mph on North Dakota’s interstate highways would be fined $50, instead of $25.

The bill would also allow cities to increase their speeding penalties.

Fargo state Representative Ed Gruchalla and assistant West Fargo police chief Mike Reitan say the higher fines will be a deterrent to highway lead foots.

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – Williston’s public schools began the
academic year with an estimated 229 new students, nowhere near the
potential 1,200 new students that Superintendent Viola LaFontaine
had projected.
LaFontaine says she’s glad she was wrong. And she says the fact that the school district prepared for a big rise in students means it will have
growing room for the future.

The district hired more than 50 new teachers this year.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Education officials say North Dakota’s
average student score on the ACT college entrance exam is slightly
lower than the national average.
The national average score is 21.1, on a scale of 1 to 36. North
Dakota’s average score is 20.7 and the same as last year.
Officials say percent of North Dakota graduates took the test,
compared with 52 percent of graduates nationwide.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The Democratic candidate for North Dakota governor is proposing an education plan that would include funding for early childhood programs, more scholarship money for college students and a boost in teacher salaries.

State Sen. Ryan Taylor on Wednesday unveiled his “Lasting Harvest” plan for education, from pre-kindergarten through college.

He says the state should take advantage of its economic prosperity by investing in something that will last beyond the oil boom.

Taylor says North Dakota is one of only 10 states in the country that does not fund the Head Start program for low-income children.

He says there are nearly 1,000 families on the waiting list for Head Start.

Taylor says he would raise the teacher pay ranking in the state from 47th in the nation to 40th within his first term.

life of a food service worker who collapsed of an apparent heart
attack at Chase Field.
Vice President of Ballpark Operations Russ Amaral says Joyce
happened to be walking past Jayne Powers when she collapsed before
Monday night’s game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Miami
Marlins.

suggested, Joyce quickly started CPR.

Marlins bullpen catcher Jeff Urgelles, a former firefighter and

Prevention reports that of 178 people infected in 21 states, two
