Jamestown ND (KCSi-T.V. News Sept 12, 2013) – The North Dakota Highway Patrol has released the names of those involved in a one vehicle rollover accident Wednesday evening about 9:40- p.m., near Spiritwood, that claimed the life of a Jamestown man.
The report says a 1972 Ford pickup driven by 48 year old Leon Skjeret of Jamestown was northbound on Stutsman County Road 62 en route from Spiritwood, to Wimbledon. The vehicle dropped off the east edge of the roadway and the driver over-corrected losing control of the vehicle. The vehicle slid sideways across the roadway and entered the west ditch. The vehicle overturned several times in the west ditch.
Both Skjeret and passenger, 24 year old Harmony Olafson of Jamestown were not seat belted and were ejected from the vehicle. Skjeret was pronounced dead at the scene. Olafson was injured and taken to Jamestown Regional Medical Center by ambulance for non life threatening injuries.
The Stutsman County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene.
The crash is under investigation by the NDHP.

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) — Officials will be receiving requests for proposals for an essential air service carrier for Jamestown later this year.
On Thursday’s (Sept. 12, 2013) Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, Jamestown Regional Airport Manager, Matt Leitner said, the RFP’s will to out in November this year, with the carrier selected to begin the new contract on March 31, 2014.
He added that the process includes public input, and other mandates in the selection process.
Jamestown has been under the Essential Air Service program since the late 1970’s as a federal subsidy is given to the airline, to enable the service to Jamestown to be profitable.
Leitner said the August 2013 boardings at Jamestown were 267, compared to 263 in August of 2012. He pointed out that August had the highest number of boardings so far this year, and the 5th consecutive month of growth in Jamestown boardings.
He noted that Great Lake Airlines is sponsoring the 5th Annual, Flying 4 Food program. Those bringing non-parishable food items to Jamestown Regional Airport, during the airport’s hours of operation, will be eligible for a drawing, with the winner receiving a round trip ticket for two to Minneapolis.
Food items will be distributed to the Progress Community Center, in Jamestown.
In other airport news, Leitner says the new rotating beacon will be soon installed at the airport, with the current beacon, over 70 years old, to be donated to a museum. The new beacon will be easier to maintain, while shining at about the same luminescence as the present beacon.
Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Spet 13, 2013) — Jefferson Bus Lines says that intercity bus service is planned to return to Jamestown October 1, 2013.
Director of Marketing Kevin Pursey, says the stop will not be staffed at the shelter near the railroad tracks in downtown Jamestown, on First Avenue West near Babb’s Coffeehouse, as approved by the Jamestown City Council.
No ticket agent will be available in Jamestown.
Pursey says signs will be put up at the stop, and a way to post schedules.
The tentative Jamestown schedule calls for a westbound bus will stop at about 2 p.m. each day.
The eastbound bus is scheduled to stop at 6:10 p.m.
Jamestown, ND (Sept 12, 2013) — The Jamestown Salvation Army will sponsor a carnival for the community held Saturday September 14, 2013, at McElroy Park’s Sertoma Shelter 11 am to 2 pm.
There will be lots of food, games with prizes, crafts and door prize drawings every half an hour and much more.
The purpose of this event is to offer a safe family friendly event for the community.
Lt. Mitch Brecto says the Salavation Army also we wanted to thank the community for their support and make them aware of what The Jamestown Salvation Army does for the Jamestown and Stutsman community, and to give back to the community, since it continues support in the time of need.
The carnival is open to everyone and there is no admission charge.
Lt. Brecto add, to feel free to bring an item for the Jamestown Salvation Amry food pantry, but it’s not required.
WASHINGTON (KCSi TV. News Sept 12, 2013) – Senators John Hoeven and Heidi Heitkamp and Congressman Kevin Cramer have announced that North Dakota airports have been awarded grants totaling more than $2.5 million for construction and renovations to airport infrastructure.
In a news release the delegation stated, “These federal grants will help us to maintain and improve runways, taxiways and other airport infrastructure. Investing in our transportation infrastructure will help our airports continue to safely serve passengers and grow to meet increasing demands,” said the delegation.”
Grants awarded through the Federal Aviation Administration, included, Barnes County Municipal Airport, awarded $66,864 for the design phase of a new taxiway to provide access to aircraft hangars and for rehabilitation designs for the existing apron pavement.
The grants were awarded by the U.S. Department of Transportation with funds appropriated by Congress.
BOWMAN, N.D. (AP) – A Bowman woman has pleaded not guilty to drowning her newborn baby and has been scheduled for trial beginning Dec. 4.
Authorities allege that 42-year-old Stephanie Lindstrom gave birth in the bathroom of her Bowman home on July 23. They say the baby was found drowned in the toilet.
Lindstrom and her boyfriend both later told police that they were unaware of her pregnancy.
Lindstrom on Thursday pleaded not guilty to Class AA felony murder, a charge that carries a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Defense attorney Erica Jaehning said in court that the coroner’s report “does not indicate the manner of death, just the cause of death.”
Prosecutor Andrew Weiss argued that there was probable cause to continue the case against Lindstrom.
GRANVILLE, N.D. (AP) – Authorities say a pickup truck driver escaped with only minor injuries after he failed to yield to an Amtrak train that separated his vehicle into two pieces.
The North Dakota Highway Patrol says the 20-year-old man was driving seven miles east of Granville Thursday morning when he crossed the tracks. The left rear of the truck was hit by the train, and both pieces came to rest in the southwest ditch along the tracks.
The train suffered just minor damage to the front of the engine and no passengers were injured.
The Granville man was treated at Trinity Hospital and cited for failure to yield at a railroad crossing.
DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) – Another suspect in the Easter Sunday robbery of a Devils Lake bowling alley has pleaded guilty.
Ramsey County State’s Attorney Lonnie Olson says 18-year-old Johnson Tollefson, of St. Michael, pleaded guilty to felony robbery this week and was sentenced to serve two years in prison.
Authorities say Tollefson and 19-year-old John Greywind Jr., of Fort Totten, robbed the Royal Lanes bowling alley of more than $2,800 at knifepoint. No one was hurt.
Greywind earlier was sentenced to serve four years in prison.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – One of the three finalists for interim chancellor of the North Dakota University System has withdrawn his name.
Former Fargo Mayor Bruce Furness said in an email to the State Board of Higher Education that although he thinks he can create positive change within the system, it’s not the time to take on such a role.
Furness’ decision leaves Larry Skogen, the acting interim chancellor and president of Bismarck State College, and Shane Goettle, a former North Dakota commerce commissioner, as the remaining candidates.
Board members hope to fill the position, which was vacated with the departure of the previous chancellor, Hamid Shirvani, at the Sept. 25 higher education board meeting in Bismarck.
The board bought out Shirvani’s contract after months of turmoil over his leadership style.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The Red River Diversion Authority is asking a federal judge to allow the group to intervene in a lawsuit filed by opponents of the planned project to divert the river around Fargo-Moorhead.
Opponents have sued the Corps of Engineers, saying the nearly $2 billion flood protection project is vastly overpriced and will damage farmland.
Diversion Authority Chairman Darrell Vanyo says intervening in the lawsuit would allow diversion leaders “a seat at the table” to help the corps’ legal team.
Authority member Nancy Otto says a lot is at stake, and it’s important that the local group be involved “in the legal realm.”
The U.S. Senate authorized the project earlier this year but hasn’t approved any money for construction. The U.S. House hasn’t yet authorized it.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The U.S. Department of Agriculture has lowered its yield forecast for North Dakota’s corn and soybean crops. The department’s National Agricultural Statistics Service says the average yield for the state’s corn crop is forecast at 111 bushels per acre, down 5 bushels from the August estimate and down 11 bushels from last year. North Dakota’s corn crop is forecast at just below 400 million bushels, down about 5 percent from last year’s record high.
MENOKEN, N.D. (AP) – Authorities are testing a raccoon for rabies after a 9-year-old Menoken boy was bitten on the hand.
Burleigh County Sheriff’s Office deputies met with the family of the boy at Sanford Health Wednesday after he was bitten by the animal near his home.
Deputies on Thursday morning captured and killed the animal after it was trapped at the property.
Local health officials are testing the raccoon for rabies.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s Game and Fish Department is working with 18 landowners in 16 hunting units across the state who want to host deer hunters with doe licenses.
The program isn’t intended for buck hunters. It’s designed to direct hunters with antlerless licenses to specific areas to reduce deer populations.
Interested hunters can get their name on a list of possible participants through the Game and Fish website at http://www.gf.nd.gov , or by calling the department’s main office in Bismarck at (701) 328-6300.
Participating landowners have openings for about 170 doe hunters. Interested hunters must have a valid 2013 deer gun license – the Game and Fish Department does not provide a hunting license with the program.

CHICAGO (AP) – Joey Logano is defending his place in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship, saying he earned his spot in the 12-driver field.
Logano is the latest driver caught in the fallout of NASCAR’s investigation into the field-deciding race at Richmond on Saturday. Radio traffic appears to show Front Row Racing offering to let Logano pass David Gilliland for a pivotal track position in exchange for something unidentified from Penske Racing.
There’s nothing in Penske radio transmissions to indicate wrongdoing. NASCAR said Thursday it is still looking into the incident.

LYONS, Colo. (AP) – The water is still rising in parts of Colorado inundated by heavy rain. GENEVA (AP) – There’s even more riding on efforts by the U.S. and Russia to agree on the details of a plan to collect and destroy Syria’s chemical weapons. WASHINGTON (AP) – President Barack Obama is losing his top economic adviser. A White House official says Gene Sperling plans to leave in January and will be replaced by Jeffrey Zients, who has twice served as White House acting budget director. An official announcement is expected today. Sperling served in the same post under President Bill Clinton.
MOSCOW (AP) – Officials in Russia say a fire at a building already deemed unsafe has killed 37 people. The mostly wooden psychiatric hospital dates back to the 19th century and an inspection this year determined that it should close. The blaze also underscored the widespread neglect of fire safety standards in Russia.
