Lawrence Francis Goehring, 94, son of Francis and Ruth (Ames) Goehring passed away, October 18, 2023 at home, under the care of his wife and Hospice of the Red River Valley. He was born on November 28, 1928, on a farm along the James River northwest of Dickey in Saratoga Township. He was raised on various farms around the Dickey area. He began working for local farmers at the age of 11. He was usually home in the wintertime and attended country school. His sixth, seventh and eighth grades were completed in the Dickey School. After graduating from eighth grade, he continued to work for farmers and at home. In 1950 he joined the Navy, attending basic training at Great Lakes Naval Training Center in Illinois. He was sent to torpedo school on Goat Island in Newport, RI. He boarded ship in San Diego for a four-year tour on the USS Sperry, a submarine tender, working as a torpedo man. Discharged in 1954, with the rank of Petty Officer 2nd Class, he returned to Dickey, where his brother Bernard was farming. Lawrence then purchased a farm 2 miles south of Dickey and he and Bernard became partners in farming. Bernard had acquired machinery while Lawrence was in the Navy. They seeded the first crop in 1955. In the 1960’s, the brothers worked at home and did custom combining locally and from the Canadian border to Texas. During the winter months, from 1955 to 1958, they went to Gilbert, AZ, working in the cotton seed oil mills, mining diatomaceous material and talc in NV. They also did some gold mining in Manhattan, Nevada. In 1966 they stopped going west and raised cattle, hogs and grain on the farm until 1985 when Bernard passed away. Lawrence stayed working on the farm and harvested for other farmers.

On June 8th, 1989 he married Susan (Kramer) Edgeley in the Dickey Methodist Church officiated by Pastor Peg Zerface. He was happy to add a step-daughter, Christine Diane to the family. The previous livestock was now gone, and he adjusted to his new role as the “feed man” for the new business of breeding and raising Paint and Quarter horses.

He enjoyed making a wide variety of friends and made room for everyone to come and visit. Beginning in 1990 and every five years thereafter, until 2010, large family reunions were held at the farm, usually around the 4th of July. At times over 100 friends and relatives came from across the United States and Canada. He loved to travel, as did Sue, and they took at least a few trips a year to visit friends and family.

It would be incomplete to not mention Lawrence’s special friends Peg and Linda and his boys. A volume of friends he felt he had a special and different relationship with throughout his lifetime. Ralph, Greg, Derick, Nathan, Lynn, Curtis, Jim, Bryan, Marly, Mike, Justin, Ray, Kenrad, Cliff, Walt, Dan, Harry, Dennis and Scott. He also became a grill master for an annual May potluck event of Sue’s hospital friends. He referred to this group as his ladies and they spoiled him rotten with annual treats and his favorite dishes.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Warren (as an infant), Bernard, John, Norman and Ray. Sister, Rhoda, sisters-in-law Myra (Ray), Linda Kiser, Rebecca Gear, brothers-in-law, Richard Whitman (Marian) Leroy Lyon (Jean) and Perry Roscoe (Rhoda). Nephews, Warren Roscoe, Tony Kramer, Quinton Kramer and Richard Kiser.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Susan, daughter Christine, grandsons Paul Joseph (PJ) and Emerson Christophe, two sisters, Marian Whitman, and Jean Lyon, two sisters in law, Sue (Norm) Goehring and Marie (John) Goehring. Nephews and nieces, David (Thanicha), Paul, Janice, Sandi (Carter), Steve, Stuart (Pamela), Sara (Elvis), Susan (Robert), Sharon (Corey), Nicole, Holly, Nancy (Mitch), Carla, LeAnn (Josh) Mike (Anne), Sharon, Douglas, Rob (Mary), Cindy (Mark) and an ever expanding special family group of great and great-grand nieces and nephews.
