Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Sept 19, 2013) — With the Jamestown Sanitary Sewer Project, Interstate Engineering reported Thursday, that 3rd Ave NW, from 4th St NW to 3rd St NW, and 3rd St NW, from 3rd Ave NW to 1st Ave N, are now open to traffic.

Motorists and residents should be aware that cleanup and other miscellaneous work is expected to take place in these areas periodically during the next few weeks.

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) – A segment of 37th Street SE, in front of Country Acres Vet Clinic, was closed to traffic Thursday, so crews can install a water main. 37th Street SE will be closed from Country Acres Vet Clinic to Highway 281.

The closure was expected to last for one day, as access Country Acres Vet Clinic was from the west, via 8th Ave SW.

 

 GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – Fire officials are investigating the cause of a blaze that damaged a Grand Forks business that makes coating products used in the aerospace industry.
 
     The Wednesday fire at Technology Applications Group Inc. damaged the building and some equipment. It is believed to be electrical in nature.
 
  A damage estimate was not immediately available.

 

 WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – The Williams County Sheriff’s Office says a pickup truck believed to be driven by a possible suspect in a Williston-area shooting has been found in Bismarck.
 
     Authorities are still searching for the male they believe might have shot another man twice early Wednesday. The 42-year-old victim is expected to recover. Authorities say he’s from Idaho.
 
     The sheriff’s office has not yet identified the victim or possible suspect or released details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

 

 GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – A jury has convicted a North Dakota man of neglecting and abusing his two daughters by living in a garage attached to a home where his parents lived in squalor with dozens of animals and birds.
 
     The jury acquitted 32-year-old James Hume of a similar charge involving a 7-year-old boy who is not his son but was in his care.
 
     Prosecutors say sheriff’s deputies found Hume living in a garage northwest of Reynolds with his 3- and 4-year-old girls, with no running water, hundreds of flies and hazardous conditions.
 
     Hume faces up to 10 years in prison when he’s sentenced Nov. 4. He also faces a separate terrorizing trial next month for allegedly threatening the person who alerted authorities about the garage living arrangements.

 

 FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Jurors in Fargo have started deliberations in the trial of a man accused of killing two children on the Spirit Lake Indian Reservation.
 
     Twenty-year-old Valentino “Tino” Bagola is charged with murder for the May 2011 slayings of 9-year-old Destiny Jane Shaw-Dubois and her 6-year-old brother, Travis Lee DuBois Jr. in St. Michael.
 
     Their mother found their bodies under a mattress at the home she had once shared with the sibling’s father.
 
     Authorities allege that Bagola stabbed the children to death after he sexually assaulted the girl, and that he did so because he was angry at their father but couldn’t find him.
 
     The defense alleges that the children’s father killed them. He denies the claim.

 

 GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – Prosecutors have dropped charges against the wife and daughter of a northeastern North Dakota farmer charged with terrorizing law enforcement officials two years ago.
 
     Fifty-seven-year-old Rodney Brossart, of rural Lakota, still is scheduled to stand trial, as are his three sons, Jacob, Thomas and Alex. They’re also charged with terrorizing.
 
Daughter Abby Brossart had been charged with assault for allegedly hitting a deputy during her father’s arrest. Wife Susan Brossart had been accused of lying to investigators about guns on the farm. Dismissal orders were filed this week.
 
     The summer-long standoff between the Brossarts and law officers in 2011 began as an investigation into missing cattle and intensified when family members ignored repeated orders to appear in court.

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Montana-Dakota Utilities Co. is asking North Dakota regulators for a 6.4 percent increase in its natural gas rates. The request would raise a typical residential customer’s natural gas bill by about $5.15 a month.
 
     President and chief executive officer Frank Morehouse says the company has made “significant” investments in its natural gas infrastructure and the increase is needed to help recover the costs.
 
     MDU’s proposed natural gas increase would raise $6.8 million in additional revenues for the Bismarck-based company each year. The utility has about 99,000 North Dakota customers.
 
     North Dakota’s Public Service Commission has seven months to review the request.
 
     MDU says its last natural gas rate increase was 2.1 percent in 2004.

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota, South Dakota, Texas and Nevada have sued the Environmental Protection Agency, alleging it has failed to determine the states’ compliance with a new federal clean air requirement that limits sulfur dioxide emissions.   
 
     The lawsuit was filed last week in federal district court in Bismarck.
 
     Attorneys general say in court papers that the states meet the new standard under the Clean Air Act. The states allege the EPA is in violation federal law by missing its deadline to make the required determinations.
 
     EPA officials did not immediately return telephone calls from The Associated Press on Thursday.
 
     Sulfur dioxide smells like rotten eggs and is a major emission from coal-fired power plants. The air pollutant has been linked to acid rain and various respiratory ailments.

 

 FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A movie prop used in an unsettling scene from the movie “Fargo” will be part of Saturday’s ESPN broadcast from the city of the same name.
 
     Charley Johnson with the Fargo-Moorhead Convention and Visitor’s Bureau says the wood chipper from the movie “Fargo” will be on the set of “College GameDay.”
 
     In the movie, one of the characters met his fate through the device.
 
     The visitor center later bought it and put it on display.
 
     Johnson says  he doesn’t know how the ESPN crew will use it.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The nation’s top state agriculture officials are urging the federal government to work with them in developing strategies for protecting the health of honeybees.
 
     The National Association of State Departments of Agriculture recently adopted a policy amendment recommending that the federal Agricultural Research Service work with state agriculture departments to implement “pollinator plans.” 
 
     North Dakota Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring introduced the amendment. He says the plans should emphasize enhanced communication between beekeepers and farmers, to ensure beekeepers continue to have access to areas that will support bee health.
 
     Goehring says the amendment is in response to increasing losses of honeybees to colony collapse disorder.
 
     North Dakota leads the nation in the production of honey. South Dakota is second.

 WASHINGTON (AP) – They’ve passed background checks, and have even been given security clearances — but now, some of those people doing work for the U.S. government have been implicated in espionage, disclosures of national secrets, and mass shootings. And a review of the government’s system of those checks and clearances finds that it’s nearly impossible to adequately investigate the nearly 5 million Americans who have those clearances, and make sure they can be trusted with access to military and sensitive civilian buildings. The Associated Press review was based on interviews, documents and other data.
 
     WASHINGTON (AP) – The man who planned a mass shooting last year at the headquarters of a conservative Christian lobbying group in Washington is apologizing, saying “resorting to violence to achieve a political end is never OK.” But Floyd Corkins says he still disagrees with the Family Research Council. He was sentenced today to 25 years in prison for the plot, which injured a security guard. Corkins was carrying 15 Chick-fil-A sandwiches and nearly 100 rounds of ammunition during the shooting. Chick-fil-A was in the news at the time because of its president’s opposition to gay marriage.
 
     CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – A North Carolina district attorney is asking the state’s attorney general to handle the prosecution of a police officer charged with the fatal shooting of an unarmed man. The D.A. says he wants to make sure there’s no appearance of bias. The police officer is facing a charge of voluntary manslaughter in the death of Jonathan Ferrell, who authorities say was shot 10 times early Saturday. They say he may have been seeking help after a car wreck when he went to a home and knocked on the door, frightening a woman into calling 911.
 
     ELLENWOOD, Ga. (AP) – As authorities in Georgia search for others who may have been involved in the kidnapping of 14-year-old Ayvani Perez, there’s word of a connection between the girl’s mother and one of the two men who’ve already been arrested in the case. Arrest records show that one of the men had been arrested in a drug bust in February of 2012, along with the girl’s mother. But the mother was never indicted, and the case was dismissed. The teen was found safe Wednesday, a day after she was taken from her home.
 
     TIFFIN, Ohio (AP) – Four young girls who died in a mobile home fire have been laid to rest in a single casket in Ohio. Mourners gathered at a funeral for the girls this morning in Tiffin. The youngest victim of the fire is being buried with his father. The five children died along with their mother’s boyfriend early Sunday morning in northern Ohio. The mother was at work at her fast-food job when the fire broke out.
