Norma Elaine Hicks, the third daughter of Erl and Rosalia (Smith) Hicks, was born October 1, 1938 near Page, ND.  She attended Minnie Lake School through the eighth grade, then attended Pillsbury High School, graduating as Valedictorian.  Following graduation, she went to work at F.W. Woolworth in Valley City where she worked her way up from a clerk to bookkeeper.  During her time at Woolworth’s, she met her future husband, Harold Hoiland.  They were married March 11, 1954 in Devils Lake, ND.  They moved to Wahpeton so Harold could attend the Wahpeton School of Science for two years.  They returned to Valley City where Norma again worked for F.W. Woolworth as a bookkeeper. Harold passed away June 7, 1988 and is buried in Woodbine Cemetery.  Norma loved to travel and did so with her sister Ardith and brother-in-law Russell Brudevold.  She traveled with her younger sister Bonnie Swanson to England, Scotland and Wales.  While in England, they visited their maternal grandparents farm and toured the countryside.  For years Norma helped with the North Dakota State Science Olympiad at North Dakota State University doing what ever she could but primarily as a calligrapher.  Norma was a very good artist working with oil paints, charcoal and metal scratch art.  In later years, she sold her house and moved to an apartment in the Elks Building, later the Rudolph and finally to the Sheyenne Care Center.

Norma is survived by several nieces and nephews:  Patricia (Pat) Martineau, Joan Ohlgren, Roger Ohlgren and Richard “Rick” (Vanita) Ohlgren.

Norma was preceded in death by her parents, her husband; sisters, Ardith Brudevold, Geraldine “Jeri” Johnson and Bonnie Swanson; brothers-in-law, Jerry Johnson, Russell Brudevold and Richard “Dick” Swanson; two nephews, Clay Hicks and Ronald “Ron” Ohlgren.
