VALLEY CITY – The Valley City State women’s basketball team ended its season Wednesday night at home, upset by Dickinson State in the NSAA Quarterfinal 84-70.

Four Vikings scored in double figures Wednesday night, but the Blue Hawks shot 48 percent from the field as well as 48 percent from 3-point range in Wednesday’s game.

VCSU finishes the season with a 13-14 overall record and a 7-5 mark in conference play. No. 6-seed Dickinson State advances to the NSAA Semifinal round and will travel to play Dakota State on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Dickinson State made seven 3-pointers and shot 50 percent in the opening half Wednesday en route to a 43-32 halftime lead. With the Vikings trailing 50-34, Adriana Torres scored seven straight points to get back within single digits with 6:32 on the clock in the third quarter. From there, Dickinson found a 13-1 run to build its biggest lead of the game on a fastbreak layup from Heather LaBree and the Vikings would never recover.

VCSU shot 36 percent from the field Wednesday (24-66), 21 percent on 3’s (5-24) and 90 percent from the free throw line (17-19). Dickinson shot 48 percent from the field (31-65) and on 3-pointers (10-21), and 71 percent on free throws (12-17). Dickinson’s 84 points and 48 percent shooting Wednesday night both ranked second-best of its season.

The teams were deadlocked with 40 rebounds apiece. Dickinson finished with 17 assists and 13 turnovers while VCSU totaled 10 assists and 16 turnovers in the game.

Four Vikings finished scoring in double double figures Wednesday, including Hailey Roberts (17), Ashlyn Diemert (15), Adriana Torres (15) and Elyse Hebrink (10). JayCee Richter pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds, and Ellie Braaten added five assists and three steals for VCSU.

Dickinson’s Samantha Oase led all players with a double-double of 27 points and 10 rebounds. She added four blocked shots and three assists to her team-leading performance. Kayden Steele (21), Hannah LaBree (12), and Heather LaBree (10) rounded out Blue Hawks scoring in double figures Wednesday.
