Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) — The Buffalo City Tourism Foundation Executive Advisory Board, Friday (Sept 20,2013), meeting at the CSi Technology Center, at Historic Franklin School, approved a $15,000 grant request from the Jamestown Parks and Recreation Department for the addition of a press box to the recently improved fast-pitch softball diamond number 11, at McElroy Park.
Spokesperson Joan Morris who helped initiate the project, said Parks and Recreation asked for the dollars so that a base of additional funds would be established to ask for matching dollars. The total cost of the press box is estimated at $25,000 to $30,000.
The press box to be located behind home plate is addition to recent improvements to diamond 11, which has included a scoreboard, new dugouts, and fences. Handicapped accessible seating is also be looked at.
The BCTF grant was approved unanimously, as the foundation board heard from Ms. Morris about increasing tourism dollars, with additional fast patch softball tournaments with teams from around the state using the facility and bringing more tourism dollars to Jamestown.
She added that other entities that have contributed to the project included the University of Jamestown, Jamestown High School, Parks and Recreation, and private donations amounting to $70,000 which has increased to $90,000, with the addition of private pledges and about $10,000 in “in-kind” donations.
Also at the meeting, former Jamestown Mayor Clarice Liechty outlined a proposal to construct a road to connect and develop into one area, the tourism sites of the Frontier Village, the National Buffalo Museum, the McElroy Park softball diamonds, and Pepper’s Dog Park, by means of a connecting road.
Also giving a presentation at the meeting was Fred Walker, of North Dakota Tourism, who since joining the department, following his tenure at the former Jamestown Convention and Visitors Bureau, has traveled about 500,000 miles, since 2003, promoting North Dakota internationally.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – Authorities say they arrested a man after an early-morning standoff at a Grand Forks motel. Police received a tip that a man with four outstanding arrest warrants was staying there. Police say Ryan Mountain is charged with felonious restraint, terrorizing, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of stolen property.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The jury in the case of a man accused of killing two children on the Spirit Lake Indian Reservation in North Dakota is set to resume deliberations.
Twenty-year-old Valentino “Tino” Bagola is charged with murder for the May 2011 slayings of 9-year-old Destiny Jane Shaw-Dubois and her 6-year-old brother, Travis Lee DuBois Jr. in St. Michael.
Authorities say Bagola stabbed the children to death after he sexually assaulted the girl, and that he did so because he was angry at their father but couldn’t find him. Defense attorneys say the father of the victims is responsible.
The jury of eight women and four men deliberated for three hours Thursday and about seven hours Friday.
Jurors are scheduled to return to the federal courthouse in Fargo at 9 a.m. today.
LEITH, N.D. (AP) – Hundreds of people from the Dakotas and Minnesota have turned out to support the small North Dakota town of Leith as members of a white supremacist group come to town.
The National Socialist Movement held a town hall meeting Sunday afternoon to support Craig Cobb, who has been buying up property in Leith in hopes of developing a white enclave.
Leader Jeff Schoep (skoop) says the group wants to ensure Cobb isn’t driven out of the community. He also says his group could do good things for the town of 16 people, including revitalize the economy.
Many people in the area say they just want Cobb and Schoep to leave. John Parker of nearby Elgin says all people want is a peaceful, quite place to raise their families.
CHRISTINE, N.D. (AP) – Opponents of the planned Red River diversion around Fargo-Moorhead are raising money to pay for a federal lawsuit against the project.
about 500 people turned out Sunday night for a fundraising steak dinner in the town of Christine.
The lawsuit filed last month over the nearly $2 billion project claims it is vastly overpriced and will damage farmland. Supporters of the project that has been authorized by the U.S. Senate but not by the House say it will provide long-term flood protection for the metro area that has fought several major spring flood battles in recent years.
Christine resident Cash Aaland says the court fight will be long – and expensive. The dinner raised $40,000, the same as a similar fundraiser in April.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A group that represents companies working in North Dakota’s oil patch is formally opposing a proposed constitutional amendment that would set aside 5 percent of the state’s oil extraction taxes to fund water, wildlife and parks projects.
The North Dakota Petroleum Council says its members passed a resolution last week at the group’s annual meeting in Grand Forks.
A coalition of conservation organizations is sponsoring the measure. The group must collect 26,904 signatures to put the issue on the November 2014 ballot.
Board Chairman Terry Kovacevich says the “initiative is a wrong approach and would take away from other critical needs across the state.”
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Two brothers from Bangladesh say they decided to pursue their doctorates in agriculture at North Dakota State University partly because they love snow.
Abdullah Al Bari and his brother, Hisam Al Rabbi, had never seen snow before they moved to North Dakota. Bari moved to the state with his wife in 2009 and Rabbi joined his brother in 2012.
Bari says that experiencing snowfall in Fargo was “like a real dream.”
The brothers were introduced to North Dakota through the book “Hotel Graver Inn,” by Ahmed Humayun, a celebrated author and director in Bangladesh who earned a doctorate at NDSU.
Bari and Rabbi plan to return to Bangladesh when they have earned their degrees, but say they will leave with good memories of the area.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – The superintendent of a small North Dakota school district says a funding glitch is forcing the district to pay out of its own pocket to cover thousands of dollars in lost state aid.
Manvel’s Richard Ray says the district is forced to pay about 90 percent of its property tax revenue to the Grand Forks public schools because Manvel does not have a high school.
The Manvel district was expecting a 10 percent increase in state aid from legislation passed this year but because of the formula, Ray says the district is getting chopped by more than $135,000 from last year.
Ray says he testified to lawmakers about flaws in the formula.
About 65 Manvel students attend high school in nearby Grand Forks.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) – The restoration of Minot’s Amtrak depot is complete.
Officials say that 16 wooden benches were installed this month inside the depot, which was inundated by historic Souris River flooding in 2013.
The depot and boarding platform were damaged by the high water, and passenger service was interrupted for five months.
The Minot Area Community Foundation donated $30,000 to replace plastic seating with the eight-foot wooden benches.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The head of Fargo-Moorhead’s Convention and Visitors Bureau says the expansion of the Bismarck Civic Center will give Bismarck an edge in the competition for conventions.
Charley Johnson says Fargo-Moorhead lacks a big convention space with adequate breakout rooms. He supports the idea of adding on to the Fargodome or building a convention center downtown. He says it’s needed if Fargo is going to compete with cities not only in the state but in the region.
Fargo has hired a consultant to study what to do.
Construction on the $27 million expansion to the Bismarck Civic Center started in July and is expected to be done by next May, in time for a major oil conference.

GameDay producer Lee Fitting tells The Forum newspaper that ESPN will make Fargo a yearly stop “if everything falls into place.”
Thousands of Bison fans dressed in green and yellow filled the streets of Broadway and many spectators cheered from windows, patios and rooftops flanking the street.

LOUDON, N.H. (AP) – Roger Penske (PEHN’-skee) says his team didn’t do anything wrong in the Richmond scandal that has rocked NASCAR.
Penske was at New Hampshire and back at a NASCAR track for the first time since the sport’s big embarrassment. He insisted his team was in the clear and knew nothing about a deal with Front Row Motorsports to get Joey Logano in the Chase.
Penske says his team had “no deal” with Front Row.
He also says he’s yet to make a decision on Sam Hornish Jr.’s future. Hornish leads the Nationwide Series standings but has no Cup ride for 2014. Penske says he told Hornish to look around at other offers.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL-AP RANKINGS
NEW YORK (AP) – With most of the top teams merely tuning up, there is little movement in The Associated Press college football poll this week. Alabama remains No. 1 and the first 14 teams in the rankings held their positions from last week.
The Crimson Tide did lose some support from the media panel, dropping from 59 first-place votes last week to 56. Alabama beat Colorado State 31-6 on Saturday in a game that was 17-6 heading into the fourth quarter.
No. 2 Oregon, which didn’t play, receives the remaining four first-place votes.
No. 4 Ohio State was one of four ranked teams to score at least 70 points Saturday. Never before had more than two ranked teams reached 70 points on the same weekend since the rankings went to top 25 in 1989.
No. 25 Fresno State is the only team to enter the rankings. Arizona State drops out.

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) – Black and grey smoke rose up from an upscale mall in Kenya after four large blasts today. Gunfire also followed the explosions. A hostage siege is in its third day at the mall in Nairobi. Security forces have been trying to rescue an unknown number of hostages held by al-Qaida-linked terrorists since an attack that killed at least 68 people.
GENEVA (AP) – The U.N. labor agency says the pace of the decline in the number of children doing hazardous work is still too slow, even though it dropped by half to 85 million from 2000 to 2012. The International Labor Organization’s goal is to have no child laborers by 2016. But the ILO’s Constance Thomas says that because of over-optimistic goals set in 2006, that may not be possible.
BOSTON (AP) – Defense lawyers for Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (joh-HAHR’ tsahr-NEYE’-ehv) want to talk about the death penalty today in federal court. Tsarnaev’s attorneys have the right to argue against the death penalty.
LONGMONT, Colo. (AP) – There’s a hectic pace in Colorado as crews work on road repairs following catastrophic flooding this month. They have a Dec. 1 target to complete temporary fixes to at least some heavily damaged roads leading to Colorado mountain towns that are still cut off. The other priority is getting key roads open to truck traffic before the fall harvest, which is worth billions to the state economy.
MANILA, Philippines (AP) – A group of Muslim rebels opposed to peace talks with the Philippine government stormed a southern town today and seized several hostages while battling security forces. As troops closed in, the withdrawing rebels split into several groups. Some hostages were later released.
