FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A West Fargo man has been sentenced to five years in prison for stealing about $72,000 worth of copper wiring from a Fargo business.
A jury convicted Soran Kaka in Cass County District Court.
A prosecutor says he broke into Bergstrom Electric in July 2012 and used a forklift to load the copper into a truck.
Kaka was also found guilty in a similar case in Bismarck and given two years in prison for that burglary.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A Fargo woman accused of texting while driving drunk, running a red light and crashing into two other vehicles has been charged with a felony.
Megan Marie Spiekermeir is charged with one count of criminal vehicular injury for the Aug. 3 crash in Fargo.
A toxicology report states the 29-year-old’s blood alcohol content was 0.209 percent, more than twice the legal limit.
Her first court appearance is Oct. 16.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Federal court officials have released documents accusing 13 people in a methamphetamine conspiracy that resulted in the overdose deaths of two people from the Dakotas.
Brock Fish, of Bismarck, is the only defendant named in all six counts of the indictment. He’s charged with conspiracy to distribute drugs resulting in death and intent to distribute meth within school zones in Bismarck, Mandan and Hague.
Court documents show that the conspiracy resulted in the deaths of 39-year-old Douglas Peterson, of Pollock, S.D., on Dec. 20, and 59-year-old Cheri Bettis, of Mandan, on Feb. 6.
Fish’s lawyer, Brenda Neubauer, and U.S. Attorney Timothy Purdon declined comment.
The indictment seeks nearly $50,000 in drug proceeds from Fish, Bretton Link and Andreas Samsa.
Trial is scheduled Nov. 18 in Bismarck.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Cass County prosecutors and Fargo police have launched a coordinated effort to combat elder abuse.
Fargo Police Chief Keith Ternes and Cass County States Attorney Birch Burdick said their agencies will devote extra attention to crimes committed against seniors.
Burdick and Ternes cited a recent investigation of thefts at a senior living center in Fargo. One case involved a 90-year-old woman who had $100 that she received for her birthday stolen from her.
Authorities say a former employee at the senior center has been charged with the thefts.
Ternes says the police department is dedicating one of its detectives to focusing on crimes against the elderly, similar to how the department approaches domestic abuse and crimes against children.
MEDORA, N.D. (AP) – Theodore Roosevelt National Park in western North Dakota is hosting a three-day astronomy festival.
The park says astronomers, rangers, educators and others will gather Friday through Sunday for the event dubbed Dakota Nights.
Park Superintendent Valerie Naylor says many people don’t have the opportunity to see stars because of light pollution in urban areas, and she’s excited about the event. Participants will use 10 telescopes to stargaze. There also will be other events such as rocket building and launching.
There is no charge for the festival, and admission to the park is being waived on Saturday in celebration of National Public Lands Day.

BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) – The annual Dakota Marker game between North Dakota State and South Dakota State typically shows up on the October or November schedule with conference titles and playoff berths on the line.
This year’s battle arrives early, and South Dakota State coach John Stiegelmeier says the timing couldn’t be better.
Stiegelmeier says the Jackrabbits got whipped at Nebraska last week, but there’s no time to dwell on that with the two-time defending FCS champion Bison coming to Brookings for Saturday’s game.
North Dakota State has won 13 straight games on the road, but coach Craig Bohl says leaving Coughlan Field with a W is always a “tough task.”

DENVER (AP) – Federal regulators say the criminal charges filed against two Colorado farmers over a deadly food-borne illness sends an emphatic message to crack down on food safety.
Cantaloupe farmers Eric and Ryan Jensen were charged in Denver federal court this week with introducing adulterated food into interstate commerce.
Prosecutors say conditions on the Jensens’ farm led to a listeria outbreak that killed 33.
The Jensens pleaded not guilty.
The Food and Drug Administration said Friday the criminal case shows farmers must take “absolute care” to keep deadly pathogens out of food.
WASHINGTON (AP) – It could be a major step toward resolving global concerns about Iran’s nuclear program. President Barack Obama and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani spoke by phone Friday, and Obama describes the conversation as constructive. It had been more than 30 years since a U.S. leader spoke with the president of Iran. Obama says there’s been “deep mistrust” between the two countries, but he now sees an opportunity for moving forward.
WASHINGTON (AP) – Whether or not the government shuts down at midnight Monday for the first time in nearly two decades could depend on the outcome of a battle within the Republican Party — pitting party leaders in the House and Senate against rebels led by some relatively junior conservatives who are adamantly opposed to funding the new health care law. The Democratic-controlled Senate Friday approved a stopgap spending bill that would keep the government running, after removing a provision that would de-fund the health care law. The House will be at work this weekend, but it’s not clear when it will vote on a new bill to avert a shutdown, and what items related to health care will be included.
WASHINGTON (AP) – President Barack Obama says a failure to increase the government’s borrowing authority would have a “profound destabilizing effect” on the U.S. and global economies. The government faces two looming deadlines. One is the potential government shutdown next week if Congress doesn’t approve a short-term spending bill. The other is a debt limit around Oct. 17 if Congress doesn’t increase the government’s borrowing authority. Obama says failure to raise the debt ceiling would be far more dangerous than a government shutdown.
NEW YORK (AP) – The stock market closed lower, Friday, capping its first losing week of September, as investors focus on the risk of a U.S. government shutdown. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 70 points. The S&P 500 lost seven, and the Nasdaq composite fell six points. The Dow and S&P 500 have fallen in six of the past seven trading days after reaching all-time highs on Sept. 18.
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) – The U.S. Justice Department says it’s providing $150,000 to put police officers in schools in Newtown, Conn., in the wake of last December’s massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The grant is intended to pay for two positions. Attorney General Eric Holder says the goal is to help the children of Newtown “feel safe and secure at school and elsewhere.”
