JAMESTOWN, N.D. – A Jamestown man accused of endangering a child, leading to the fentanyl overdose of a toddler, was sentenced to 10 years, two years of the sentence has been suspended.

Christopher Johnson is charged with endangerment of a child, reckless endangerment, and several drug-related charges. He was scheduled for a change of plea hearing on September 18.

A woman also charged in the case pleaded guilty on September 18 and was sentenced. Rhiannon Hufstetler was charged with reckless endangerment and maintaining a dwelling for using controlled substance. The latter charge was dismissed and she pleaded guilty to reckless endangerment. She was sentenced to 5 years in the North Dakota Department of Corrections and given credit for 20 days already served.

According to court documents, the Jamestown Police Department and Jamestown Ambulance responded to a home in the 1300 block of 6th Avenue NW on June 2 for a report of an unresponsive child.

When officers arrived, they found Hufstetler outside holding an unconscious two-year-old. Officers gave the girl Narcan and the child started to regain consciousness. The child was taken to the hospital by ambulance, more Narcan was given, and court records say the child became conscious.

Officers say Hufstetler and Johnson admitted they had methamphetamine and fentanyl in the house.

Court documents say Johnson admitted to using fentanyl while the two-year-old was home with him. He told officers he fell asleep and when he woke up, his daughter was unconscious.

Video surveillance from the home shows Johnson pass out after taking fentanyl with a syringe in the kitchen. The child was found unconscious laying on the kitchen counter.
