BISMARCK, N.D. – Grayson Mills Operating notified the North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality of a produced water spill resulting from well equipment malfunction in Williams County on Wednesday, Oct. 29. The company estimates that approximately 497 barrels (20,874 gallons) of produced water were released, with about 3 barrels (126 gallons) impacting rangeland. The incident occurred approximately 7 miles from Williston. Personnel from the Department of Environmental Quality are en route to the site and are working with the responsible party on cleanup efforts. They will continue to monitor the investigation and remediation. Federal and state laws require operators to report the spillages of any materials that may pollute water, air or soil. BISMARCK, N.D. – Hunt Oil notified the North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality (NDDEQ) of a freshwater release from a tank on a well location in Divide County, approximately 13 miles southwest of Crosby, on Saturday, Nov. 2.
Hunt released the remaining 278 barrels of freshwater from their hydraulic fracture process (fracking) onto the well site, resulting in a portion of the released water flowing off the well pad. Freshwater used in fracking is typically sourced from permitted locations, which may include nearby wetlands or municipal water supplies.
Personnel from the NDDEQ are working with the responsible party and will continue to monitor the investigation and remediation.
