BELLEVUE NEB – The Valley City State University baseball team dropped their first two conference games against Bellevue University on Thursday, March 27.
The Vikings fall to 15-16 on the season and 0-2 in NSAA Conference games. The Bruins move to 16-11 overall and start their conference schedule 2-0.
The Vikings played as the home team in both games as they were schedule to be the home team prior to the series being moved to Bellevue due to the weather.
BU 6, VCSU 5
The Vikings fell just short in their comeback efforts against the Bruins, with a final score of 6-5. Porter Jorgenson led the Vikings going 3-for-4 with two RBIs in the contest. Jaden Babiuk was 1-for-3 with a double, one run, and one RBI.
Bellevue got on the board first after Logan Grant three run home run giving them a 3-0 lead after the top of the third.
The Vikings quickly responded scoring two of their own in the bottom of the third after Porter Jorgenson batted two runs in on a single to center field. Kaden Rozdeba and Alexis Velasco scored on the play.
Down 3-2 the Vikings gave up one more run in the top of the fourth on a Bellevue sacrifice fly. In the bottom of the fourth the Vikings went on to tie the game 4-4 from a Jaden Babiuk double, that drove home Diesel Goya, and Jamel Chabot reaching on an error also allowing Babiuk to score.
Later in the top of the sixth the Bruins reclaimed the lead from a one run homer by Elijah Tanner making it 5-4.
The Vikings immediately responded scoring one of their own in the bottom of the sixth tying the game at 5-5. Jamel Chabot provided the game tying single that brought home Brady Papineau.
In the top of the seventh Bellevue’s Scott Hansen hit a one run homer to take the 6-5 lead. The Vikings were unable to answer in the bottom of the seventh, falling 6-5.
Valley City State’s Anthony Carrasquillo was credited the loss after a one yielding one run in the seventh. Hunter Magnuson pitched the other six innings yielding five hits, five runs, throwing three strikeouts.
Bellevue’s Teron Williams was credited the win.
BU 10, VCSU 0
The Vikings fell 10-0 via run rule after the eighth inning. VCSU had five hits in the contest and were led by Devon Minney going 1-for-2 and a walk.
The Bruins tallied two in the top of the second scoring two on an Ayden Makarus home run. They added on two more in the top of the third off a Viking error and a single making the score 4-0.
In the top of the fifth they scored one off a Steven Elsner home run growing their lead to 5-0.
The Bruins tallied two in the two more in the seventh and three in the eighth to make it 10-0 where the game would end via run rule.
Viking pitcher Connor Martin was credited the loss after a five strikeout, six hit, five run performance.
Bellevue’s Jace Wessels was credited the win.
