REDFIELD, S.D.— The Jimmie baseball team rallied from a 9-6 deficit in the final two innings Monday afternoon against Briar Cliff University to post a one-run win in game one, then combined for 14 runs in the middle three innings for a 15-4 victory and a sweep of the Chargers at Redfield Baseball Field.

GAME ONE

  • Briar Cliff got on the board for a pair of runs in the top of the first, but the Jimmies took a one-run lead after Ryan Muizelaar’s three-run homer in the bottom of the inning.
  • Jamestown plated a pair of runs in the second without the benefit of a hit. Riki Okamoto scored on a balk and Chase Burke crossed the plate on a steal of home to make it 5-2.
  • The Chargers got within 5-4 after scoring twice in the top of the fourth, then in the bottom half UJ got one of the runs back when Muizelaar came home as Triston Madison reached on an error.
  • A five-run sixth inning from Briar Cliff gave them a 9-6 lead, and while the Jimmies were down, they were not completely out of the game.
  • A double by Madison and a single by Isaiah Roebuck brought in a pair of runs as Jamestown cut the deficit to one run going into their final at-bat.
  • Burke opened the inning with a walk, then stole second base. Alex Alva was hit by a pitch, then Muizelaar singled through the left side to score Burke and move Alva to second.
  • Sy Steele laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners a base, and Madison delivered the game-winner, a single through the right side that allowed Alva to come home with the deciding run.
  • Muizelaar had a big day at the plate, batting a perfect 4-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored. Madison added a pair of hits and drove in two.
  • Payton Hochhalter (1-0), the last of eight Jimmie pitchers in the game, retired the only hitter he faced in the top of the seventh to get the win.

GAME TWO

  • Jamestown used a six-run third inning to take a 7-1 lead and went on to a 15-4 victory to finish the sweep of Briar Cliff.
  • Chase Burke’s solo home run started the scoring while Ben Patton’s three-run homer capped off UJ’s offensive outburst.
  • The Chargers got within 7-3 after a two-run homer in the top of the fourth, but the Jimmies turned in another six-run inning that ended up being the knockout blow.
  • Triston Madison’s two-run single made it 10-3, then after RBI singles by Patton and Ben SwennumsonAlex Alva hit a sacrifice fly for the final run of the inning.
  • Madison and Isaiah Roebuck scored on separate wild pitches in the bottom of the fifth for the final Jimmie runs.
  • Roebuck turned in a 3-for-4 game at the plate, while Swennumson, Patton, and Burke all had two hits.
  • Nolan McCaffery (1-0) got the win in his first UJ start, giving up three runs on five hits over four innings.
  • Payton Hochhalter, Patton, and Varen Sabino combined to pitch the final three innings and allowed only one run on two hits.
