Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) — The Jamestown City Council met in Special Session Wednesday (Oct 9, 2013) at 4-p.m., at City Hall, to discuss economic indicators in Jamestown. All members were present.

Areas of discussion included:

Receiving information concerning certain economic indicators in the Jamestown Trade Area.

Mayor Andersen said a developers agreement was signed concerning the site development plan, which includes a “retail leakage study,” in Jamestown.

She noted that some information may be confidential concerning dealing with businesses that may be looking to locate in Jamestown, but that the city will conduct business in public as much as possible.  Developers on hand explained working with retailers in the upper midwest, with a home improvement “leakage” study, with Jamestown in need of a major home improvement store.

Real Estate Developer, Drew Snyder,  President at Woodsonia Real Estate Group Inc, Omaha, Nebraska, said Jamestown is under served concerning home improvement stores, such as Lowes, Home Depot, and Menards.

He presented information on Jamestown and Stutsman County census data, showing stagnant growth. He said unemployment is low in the area, which can be a negative to retailers in terms of available workers to staff stores.

He pointed out that the recent Jamestown Taxable Sales was $251 million of which $4.4 million was in home improvement sales, which he said is extremely low, or 1.8 percent, amounting to $88,000 in sales taxes, annually.

The Jamestown home improvement store sales “leakage” is about $56 million and $1.1 million in sales taxes.

The percentage is compared to Brookings, and Mitchell, South Dakota, and North Platte, Nebraska, comparable to Jamestown.

He defined a “trade area,” where an area generates most of its sales. He said a 50-mile radius of Jamestown is from where shoppers will come to Jamestown.

He said sales not captured, going to Bismarck or Fargo is 61% or about $510,000,000 is going out of town.

A Jamestown site lay out for a home improvement store, includes, property west of the Buffalo Mall and south of I-94, with a secured purchase agreement  of 65 acres from Liechty Associates, for a major home improvement retailer.

The interested home improvement store would require 20- acres and the balance could be used for other retailers and ancillary service providers.  Those could include hotels restaurants  and fashion stores.

It was explained that with infrastructure, water and sewer is suitable, with improvements needed  in the area of surrounding roads, including road extensions and adding a proposed roadway.

Mayor Andersen said the retail “leakage” data will be presented to the officials of Menard’s, Lowes and Home Depot, and that potential contracts will be reviewed by the city and store officials. She said, one retailer, not named,  has shown “significant interest,” in Jamestown.  At one point in the meeting the area was referenced as “the Menard’s site.”

Snyder said the timeline is for an announcement in the first quarter of 2014 and an opening date for the actual retailer in early 2015.

The meeting was shown live on CSi 67 followed by replays.

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Oct 9, 2013) — As the winter season approaches, the Holiday Shopping Marathon is encouraging the public to get in shape for Christmas… Christmas gift giving that is.

In partnership with the Jamestown Area Chamber of Commerce, Buffalo City Tourism, Main Street Downtown and the Jamestown Civic Center, the goal of the Marathon is to increase local spending as well as raise awareness to the various retail offerings available here.

Buffalo City Tourism Director, Searle Swedlund says, “Last year, Americans spent $1 billion online just on Black Friday. Let’s keep those dollars here. The Holiday Shopping Marathon is the perfect opportunity – at a perfect time of year – for retail stores to display their offerings to Jamestown natives as well as those visiting from out of town.”

The Marathon begins Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013 in conjunction with the Jamestown Civic Center’s Gift & Craft Sale. The “race” ends 26 days later on Black Friday, Nov. 29.

As the committee prepares for the event, it is asking retail businesses to sign up and participate in the Marathon’s Punch Card. The goal of the Punch Card is to encourage shoppers to patronize local retail businesses as well as visit stores they’ve never entered. To complete the Punch Card, the shopper must visit at least a ten businesses.

Jamestown Mayor, Katie Andersen says, “We’re hoping people realize that the Jamestown area has a wealth of shopping opportunities. Jewelry, for example, most people know Riddle’s and JCPenney offer a sizeable selection, but Babb’s Coffee House and the Frontier Fort sell accessories as well.”

Once completed, the shopper can turn the Punch Card in for a chance to win $500 in Jamestown Area Chamber of Commerce Chamber Bucks. In addition to the grand prize, the committee is also giving out a prize each week. Shoppers who turn their Punch Cards in early get more chances to win.

Thanks to the Marathon’s generous partners, this service is provided to retail businesses at no cost.

Committee members include Swedlund, Andersen, Jessica Haak, Monica Hieb, Josh Vraa, Tim Perkins, Shirley Jackson, Erin Paulson, Kendra Krueger, Cassie Theurer, Pam Fosse and Katie Ryan-Anderson.

If your business wants to be included or have questions, please contact one of the committee members or call Buffalo City Tourism at 251-9145

Jamestown, ND, (KCSi-T.V. News October 9, 2013)— Women who undergo routine mammograms at JRMC will have the latest screening and diagnostic technology available to them starting in October.

JRMC is the first facility in North Dakota to offer 3D mammography for breast cancer screening. 3D mammography (breast tomosynthesis) helps radiologists identify and characterize individual breast structures without the confusion of overlapping tissue.

The center’s Selenia® Dimensions® 3D mammography system is made by Hologic, a world leader in digital mammography. 3D mammography offers exceptionally sharp breast images, an advanced ergonomic design providing more patient comfort, and the ground-breaking 3D mammography platform designed to deliver superior screening and diagnostic performance.

Breast cancer screening with 3D mammography when combined with a conventional 2D mammography has a higher cancer detection rate than conventional 2D mammography alone. Radiologists are reporting that 3D mammography technology gives them increased confidence with a significant reduction in recall rates.

During a 3D mammogram exam, multiple, low-dose images of the breast are acquired at different angles. These images are then used to produce a series of one-millimeter thick slices that can be viewed as a 3D reconstruction of the breast.

By offering women the latest technology in mammography, JRMC hopes to increase the number of area women who will be routinely screened. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women, exceeded only by lung cancer.

Statistics indicate that one in eight women will develop breast cancer sometime in her lifetime. The stage at which breast cancer is detected influences a woman’s chance of survival. If detected early, the five-year survival rate is 98 percent.

JRMC is committed to the fight against breast cancer. In offering 3D mammography, JRMC provides the latest in imaging quality.

If you would like to schedule a mammogram or have questions about this important breast health procedure, please contact JRMC Radiology at (701) 952-4852.

WATFORD CITY, N.D. (AP) – An FBI agent was shot and wounded though not seriously while helping serve a drug warrant in the western North Dakota oil patch.

FBI spokesman Kyle Loven says the agent was treated at a hospital and released after the incident Monday night near Watford City. The agent wasn’t identified.

Loven didn’t release any other details, citing the ongoing investigation. KFGO reports that a 52-year-old Keene man was arrested on drug and weapon counts but wasn’t charged in the shooting. Several other arrests were made in the same area Monday.

U.S. Attorney Timothy Purdon says the agent was part of a multi-agency crackdown on organized drug distribution in northwestern North Dakota, including the Fort Berthold Reservation. Twenty-two people were charged earlier this year as part of the investigation.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – About two dozen airmen with the North Dakota Air National Guard are back home after serving about half a year in Afghanistan helping with security at Bagram Airfield and elsewhere.

The members of the Fargo-based 119th Security Forces Squadron flew home late Tuesday. They were welcomed by state Guard commander Maj. Gen. David Sprynczynatyk (sprihn-suh-NAT’-ihk) and Lt. Gov. Drew Wrigley, among others.

Seven more airmen with the unit remain overseas but are expected home later this month.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Stockmen’s Association is urging ranchers who lost cattle in last weekend’s snowstorm to keep detailed records of their losses.

Ranchers and industry officials in the Dakotas have said the losses are aggravated by the fact that a government disaster program to help ranchers recover from livestock losses has expired, and ranchers won’t be able to get federal help until Congress passes a new farm bill.

North Dakota Stockmen’s President Jason Zahn says ranchers should make sure they have the necessary records if livestock disaster assistance programs become available.

The storm dumped more than 1  1/2 feet of snow on parts of southwestern North Dakota. Ranchers are still tallying their losses.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) – Rod Grams, a former Twin Cities anchorman who went on to serve as a Republican U.S. senator from Minnesota, has died at age 65.

Grams died at his home in the east-central Minnesota town of Crown late Tuesday night, Kent Kaiser, a longtime GOP activist and spokesman for the Grams family, said Wednesday. Grams had been diagnosed with cancer in April 2012.

Grams was well-known to Twin Cities TV viewers after nearly a decade as lead news anchor for KMSP-TV. He launched his political career in 1992 with a successful run for Congress in Minnesota’s 6th District.

After two years in the House, Grams won election to an open U.S. Senate seat. But six years later he lost the seat to Democrat Mark Dayton.

In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) – House Speaker John Boehner’s (BAY’-nurz) office says a small group of House Republicans will meet with President Barack Obama Thursday — instead of the full caucus that the White House invited. A Boehner spokesman says the meeting is only worthwhile if it’s focused on finding a solution. So only the elected leadership and select committee chairmen will attend. Republicans are demanding talks on deficit reduction and Obama’s health care law before they’ll approve spending legislation and reopen the government. Obama says he won’t negotiate until the spending plan is approved with no strings attached.

WASHINGTON (AP) – The Republican-led House has passed legislation to restore death benefits to the families of fallen U.S. soldiers — payments that were halted by the government shutdown. The vote split across party lines with most Democrats voting against and demanding the entire government be reopened. It’s unclear if the Senate will take up the bill. The Pentagon typically pays out $100,000 within three days of a soldier’s death. But it says the shutdown means there is no authority now to pay the money. The White House says it expects a solution to be found Wednesday.

BANDAR SERI BAGAWAN, Brunei (AP) – The White House is getting ready to cut hundreds of millions of dollars in military and economic aid to Egypt. U.S. officials say the announcement is expected this week. It’s expected to create new friction in what is already an uneasy relationship between the U.S. and the military-backed government of Egypt, which ousted the country’s first democratically-elected president.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – Officials at a San Francisco hospital have concluded that a body discovered in a hospital stairwell was that of a female patient who went missing more than two weeks ago. Fifty-seven-year-old Lynne Spalding was being treated for an infection at the hospital when she disappeared on Sept. 21. Her body was discovered Tuesday. Sheriff’s officials say they don’t know how she ended up in the stairwell or how she died.

FLORENCE, Ariz. (AP) – Arizona has executed the oldest person on its death row. The execution of 71-year-old Edward Schad came nearly 35 years after he was charged with murdering a man during a robbery. And it came about two hours after the U.S. Supreme Court denied his final appeals. The case had become tied up in a series of appeals to federal courts.
