Donald Steidl, 90, of Fingal, ND, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 14, 2025, in Valley City, ND, surrounded by his loving family.
Don was born on April 8, 1935, to Henry and Julia (Sherman) Steidl. He spent his entire life rooted in the Fingal community, growing up and later taking over the family farm. After serving honorably in the U.S. Army stationed at Fort Bliss, TX from December 1954 to November 1956, Don returned home to continue the family farming legacy. He began with dairy cattle and, in 1994, transitioned to raising beef cattle—a pursuit he continued for many years with dedication and quiet pride.
A man of enduring patience, subtle humor, and a deeply generous spirit, Don made a lasting impact on those around him. Many cherished memories were made at the kitchen table, where he spent countless hours teaching his grandchildren card games—not letting them win easily, but ensuring they truly learned. In his playful way, he even shared every trick in the book to cheat, filling those lessons with laughter, challenge, and a special bond that grew stronger over time.
He was also the first to hand over a set of car keys, trusting and encouraging even the most nervous first-time drivers. On routine trips to the Valley, he’d ride calmly in the passenger seat, offering steady guidance from their house all the way to Highway 32. Whether behind the wheel or sitting beside him, you always knew Grandpa believed in you.
The grandkids remember a childhood full of tractor rides, helping feed the cows, and many trips into town—all conveniently timed to pick up dog treats. These simple, joyful moments reflected the way Don lived: present, dependable, and always making room for connection.
Don gave his time so freely, his wisdom so generously, and his love so steadily. These small moments—whether in a lesson, a drive, or a quiet shared task—have left a legacy of quiet strength and gentle guidance that his family will carry forward every day.
Don is survived by his children, Larry (Ruby) Steidl and Susan (Charlie) Thompson; 11 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and his brother, Paul (Jeannie) Steidl. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rita Steidl; his son, Daniel Steidl; his parents, Henry and Julia; and siblings Henry, Dorothy, and Mitzi.
The funeral Mass for Donald “Don” Steidl will be celebrated Friday, June 27, 2025, in Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Fingal. Visitation will begin that morning at 9:30. The Rosary will be prayed at 10:00 with Mass starting at 10:30. He will be laid to rest in the Holy Trinity Cemetery with military honors. Don’s family suggests memorial be made in his memory to the Holy Trinity Cemetery.
