Jamestown ND (JPD) – UPDATE as of 6/19/25: On June 18, 2025, at approximately 0154 hrs., Jamestown Police were dispatched to a residence inside Western Park Village, on a report the resident was not feeling safe in her home. The victim indicated there was a male inside the residence, who was allegedly
using drugs and yelling at her.

Upon further investigation, the victim reported the male had threatened to “kill her”. The victim also reported the male refused to leave the residence and there were multiple firearms inside the residence, which the suspect would have access to. Officers attempted to make contact with the suspect, but he refused to speak with officers and quickly retreated further inside the residence. He barricaded himself in a back room. 4 occupants were safely evacuated from the home, but the suspect took a 2-year-old child with him, when he went to hold up in a back room.

Based on all the information learned about the incident, suspect, and the safety risks posed to the investigating officers, public, victim(s), and suspect, the James Valley Special Operations Team, consisting of Tactical Officers and Negotiators, was activated at 0250 hrs., to assist in minimizing those safety risks. During the standoff, Police were eventually able to establish some communication with the suspect inside the home. However, the suspect refused to comply with Police requests to come outside or to assist the child in leaving the residence.

At approximately 1245 hrs., the James Valley Special Operations Team successfully entered the
residence, quickly removed the child, and took the male suspect into custody.

The male suspect has been identified as 30-year-old Jacob Lee Schmitt of Jamestown. Schmitt was arrested on suspicion of Terrorizing. Schmitt was taken to Stutsman County Corrections, to await formal charges. This incident remains under investigation and additional charges are possible.

Jamestown Police were assisted by the Stutsman County Sheriff’s Office, North Dakota Highway Patrol, Jamestown Street Department, and the Stutsman County Emergency Management Office, and Jamestown Area Ambulance.

Jamestown Police and James-Valley Special Operations Team are continuing to work an active scene inside Western Park Village. The shelter in place advisory is still active and we are asking the public to continue to avoid the area.

At approximately 2am, Jamestown Police were dispatched to investigate a domestic violence incident. Upon investigation, it is alledged the suspect made terroristic threats toward another person. Officers tried to make contact with the suspect, but he refused and barricaded himself inside a room of a residence. He also took a 2 year old child with him and he remains held up inside the residence. It is believed he has access to firearms in his current location. Police have been negotiating with the suspect for a while, but he is refusing to comply with police requests.

The Jamestown Police Department and James-Valley Special Operations Team are working an active incident in the area of Western Park Village. We are asking the residents of WPV to shelter in place at this time. The area is shut down to traffic and we are asking for people to avoid the area.
