Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Oct 10, 2013) — Boardings at Jamestown Regional Airport, jumped in September this year.

Manager, Matt Leitner says September’s boardings were up 49 percent, over September of 2012, from 171 to 253. He said that was the highest number of boardings for a September, and the second highest number of boardings this year.

He pointed out that the tower for the new airport beacon has arrived on site, and is expected to be installed this Monday. The present beacon, 71 years old will be sent to the Bismarck Air Museum, that is yet to be constructed.

He added that the new runway lighting is installed and will be adjusted.

Leitner said the spring of 2014 is the target date to start construction of nine hangars the first phase of new hangar construction. Current the project is in the planning and design phase, and includes ramp and other lighting.

He said the Requests For Proposals for an Essential Air Service carrier for Jamestown will go out at the end of this month.

The carrier would be in place for Jamestown by March 31, 2014. The selected carrier, if different than the present carrier, Great Lakes Airlines, would then have 30 days to have such items as new signage, in place.

He said Great Lakes Airlines may continue, or another carrier could take its place, depending on which airline is selected, under a new contract.

 

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Oct 10, 2013 – The Jamestown City Fire Department continues to seek recruits.

Chief Jim Reuther says there are six volunteer positions available, with the goal to fill 8 spots to bring the total to 40 City Fire Department firefighters.

Experience is a plus, however, those accepted will undergo training.

BISMARCK, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Oct 10, 2013) – The N.D. Department of Human Services’ Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) recently honored several employees for their work assisting North Dakotans with disabilities to obtain employment.

Jennifer Moldenhauer and Debra Carlson, Jamestown, were recipients of the Director’s Award for Counselor Achievement. This award highlights the top 10 percent of counselors with the highest number of individuals placed into employment.

Robyn Throlson, Bismarck and Derek Kimmes, Jamestown, were co-recipients of the Exemplary Service Award. This award recognizes outstanding case service to VR clients by showing creative thinking, direct work with multiple agencies, and consistent client follow-up.

Other honorees included:

· Katharine Millner and Candace Hanson, Bismarck, were the recipients of the Director’s Award for Counselor Achievement – Honorable Mention. This award honors counselors who have the second highest number of individuals placed into employment.

· Jamie Hetrick of Dickinson was honored as the Rookie of the Year. This award honors a VR employee with less than two years of service who exceeds performance goals and displays a high level of community service and involvement.

· Erik Anthony of Grand Forks was honored with the Director’s Award for Excellence. Anthony was nominated for this prestigious award by his peers for demonstrating dedication, productivity, and dependability to the VR program.

The Career Achievement Awards are based on the number of people with disabilities placed into employment over the course of a vocational rehabilitation counselor’s career. The awards start at the 100 Club award level and increase in increments of 100.

· Debra Carlson of Jamestown received the Career Achievement – 500 Club award.

· Brenda Satrom of Grand Forks received the Career Achievement – 200 Club award.

· Jennifer Moldenhauer of Jamestown and Misty Leuthardt-Riskey of Fargo received the Career Achievement – 100 Club award.

The N.D. Vocational Rehabilitation program’s mission is to assist individuals with disabilities to maximize their employment opportunities and to assist business owners and employers in finding solutions to disability-related issues.

 COOPERSTOWN, N.D. (AP) – A critic of the five Griggs County commissioners who were voted out of office this week says it’s a victory not only for county residents but also for democratic government.
 
     John Wakefield says the first thing he and the other four new commissioners plan to do is call for an independent audit to get more information about the actions of their predecessors.
 
     The commissioners ousted in Tuesday’s recall election voted last spring to proceed with building a $3.5 million courthouse despite three public votes against it. Doing so helped secure a $1 million federal grant for the project. But Wakefield says the decision was “political suicide.”
 
     Ousted commissioner Keith Monson says the commission knew the decision wouldn’t be popular.

 

 FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A Minnesota toddler who bit into a Tide detergent pod more than two weeks ago has been released from a North Dakota hospital.
 
   1-year-old Alexander Rohde from Hitterdal, Minn., left Sanford’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit in Fargo Thursday.
 
     Donations to help with the mounting medical bills can go to any Gate City Bank location.
 
     Family members say he thought the pod was a treat.

 

 GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – A beet truck crash in Grand Forks left the road covered with the vegetable.
 
     Police say the driver of the tractor trailer was able to get out of the truck by himself.
 
     The mans’s  name and condition were not released after Thursday’s accident.
 
     It happened at an intersection that’s a busy one for truckers hauling beets from area farms to a nearby processing plant.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The state Department of Health says an oil pipeline owned by Tesoro spewed 20,600 barrels of crude oil in a wheat field in northwestern North Dakota.
 
     Environmental geologist Kris Roberts says the spill was discovered on Sept. 29 by a farmer harvesting wheat.
 
     Roberts says cleanup crews have been on site since then and have recovered about 1,165 barrels of oil. A barrel is 42 gallons.
 
     Roberts says the spill covers an area the size of about seven football fields. He says the spill has been contained and no water sources have been contaminated.
 
     Tesoro officials did not immediately return telephone calls from The Associated Press seeking comment on Thursday.
 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota regulators have approved plans for a $300 million wind farm project in southwestern Adams County.
 
     The state Public Service Commission voted 2-1 Wednesday to approve the Thunder Spirit Wind LLC project, which is to include up to 75 turbines near Hettinger.
 
     Construction is to begin late this year or early next year, and take about nine months to complete.

 

FORT YATES, N.D. (AP) – As many as 400 children on the Standing Rock Reservation will be getting free dental care this week.
 
     North Dakota’s Health Department says a Pediatric Dental Day is scheduled Friday and Saturday at Prairie Knights Casino near Fort Yates. A large group of dentists and dental workers and students from North Dakota, South Dakota and other states will be volunteering.
 
     The Kansas-based America’s Dentists Care Foundation Missions of Mercy nonprofit also is helping, as it has with similar events in other states.
 
     The Health Department says studies show that American Indian children have three times more dental disease than any other population.
 
     The Standing Rock Reservation straddles the North Dakota-South Dakota border.

 

In Sports…

 ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) – Twenty-two financial institutions have applied to help underwrite the $498 million taxpayer share of the new Minnesota Vikings stadium.
 
     Minnesota Management and Budget released the list Thursday. It includes some of the nation’s most prominent banks and financial institutions, including U.S. Bank, Wells Fargo Securities, Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs.
 
     A spokesman says Management and Budget will take a few weeks to select an underwriter. More than one firm could be chosen. He says no firm date has been set for issuance of the bonds, which will be executed over a period of about two years.
 
     The Vikings organization is responsible for the other roughly $477 million share of the new stadium. Groundbreaking is planned for November, with plans to open the stadium in time for the 2016 season.

 

In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) – Financial markets have been surging Thursday, in anticipation of a deal that could avert a federal financial default. President Barack Obama is meeting Thursday  afternoon with House Speaker John Boehner (BAY’-nur) and other Republicans at the White House. And Boehner said today that Republicans would vote to extend the debt limit for six weeks — but only if Obama agrees to new negotiations on spending cuts. In the meantime, the shutdown would continue. The White House says Obama would probably sign a measure increasing the debt cap, but that he wants Republicans to reopen the government.
 
     WASHINGTON (AP) – The head of the International Monetary Fund is warning the U.S. that failure to raise the debt ceiling could do deep damage to both the American and global economies. Christine Lagarde, speaking to reporters in Washington, said the United States needs to put its “fiscal house” in order. She’s attending an annual meeting of global financial leaders.
 
     WASHINGTON (AP) – The Senate has joined the House in approving a measure that would provide benefits for the families of fallen troops. Pentagon officials have faced outrage over the suspension of those payments during the partial government shutdown. The Pentagon typically pays out $100,000 within three days of the death of a service member. Since the shutdown began last Tuesday, 29 members of the military have died on active duty.
 
     NEW YORK (AP) – A 16-year-old Pakistani girl who survived a Taliban assassination attempt is making public appearances in New York on the eve of this year’s Nobel Peace Prize announcement. Malala Yousafzai (mah-LAH’-lah YOO’-suhf-zeye) is considered a contender for the prize, along with several others. The teenager is in New York Thursday, hours after winning Europe’s top human rights award. She is discussing her experiences and promoting her memoir “I am Malala” in media interviews.
 
     ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) – The Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit is operating again at Universal Studios Florida, after getting stuck Wednesday  night. The 12-person train stopped near the top of the roller coaster’s first hill, leaving a dozen people stranded for more than two hours. Universal says crews worked through the night to fix the problem, but a spokesman wouldn’t explain what that problem was. No serious injuries were reported. The ride was closed for two days in August after it came to a sudden stop.
