He added that the new runway lighting is installed and will be adjusted.

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News (Oct 10, 2013) — The Frontier Village Association will approach the Buffalo City Tourism Foundation for a $5,000 grant.

The money would be earmarked to restore the Jamestown Parade Train, which was built by longtime railroad man the late James Carlascio.

The FVA approved seeking the grant on a request from Shawn Syverson, a Jamestown mechanic who has been working to restore the four-car train replica, using his own money.

Syverson proposes that the Frontier Village assume ownership of the train after he restores it, as he becomes the train’s engineer, and driver, and could train other people to drive the vehicle.

The train is actually a motor vehicle with three attached cars — a coal tender, a flatbed trailer and a caboose.

The train has fallen into disrepair after Carlascio gave the train to Bonzanaville, in in Fargo, in 1998.

FVA President Charlie Tanata said the association will submit the grant request and see what happens.

MANDAN, N.D. (AP) – A Mandan man on trial for manslaughter in the death of another man after a house party fight a year ago has been convicted of a lesser charge.

Jurors on Thursday found 23-year-old Colten Towry guilty of aggravated assault. The charge carries a maximum punishment of five years in prison — half of what Towry could have faced had he been convicted of manslaughter.

Towry was accused of punching 30-year-old Derek Oshkeshequoam (awsh-KEESH’-kuh-wawm) at the October 2012 party. Oshkeshequoam fell and hit his head on pavement, and died days later at a hospital. Towry testified that he was trying to break up a fight between Oshkeshequoam and another man when the incident happened.

A sentencing date was not immediately set.

Police say the driver of the tractor trailer was able to get out of the truck by himself.

The Grand Fork Herald reports his name and condition were not released after Thursday’s accident.

It happened at an intersection that’s a busy one for truckers hauling beets from area farms to a nearby processing plant.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Wheat farmer Steve Jensen says he had been smelling crude oil for days on his farm near Tioga, in northwestern North Dakota. But he didn’t think much of it until his combine tires became coated with crude.

Jensen says the crude oil was “spewing and bubbling six inches high” at the apparent break in an underground pipeline.

State health officials say more than 20,000 barrels of crude oil spewed out of a Tesoro Corp. oil pipeline in Jensen’s wheat field. The spill was discovered on Sept. 29.

Jacob Wiedmer was helping Jensen harvest his wheat and likened the bubbling crude to the theme song from the “Beverly Hillbillies” television show.

North Dakota Governor Jack Dalrymple (DAHL’-rimp-ul) says he wasn’t told about the oil spill  until Wednesday night, days after it was discovered on September 29th.

A Sierra Club spokesman says the large oil spill near Tioga is an example of a lack of oversight in a state where oil development has exploded in recent years. Wade Schafer says North Dakota needs “more inspectors and more transparency.”

Tesoro says it will “work tirelessly” to clean up the area.

The Texas-based company says in a statement that the affected portion of the pipeline has been shut down. CEO Greg Goff says “protection and care of the environment are fundamental to our core values.”

Tesoro says no water sources have been contaminated, no wildlife has been hurt and no one has been injured.

Company officials are investigating what caused the hole in the 6-inch-diameter steel pipeline

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The Theodore Roosevelt National Park in western North Dakota won’t be reopening any time soon despite the federal government saying it would let states pay to operate some national parks closed by the shutdown.

The Obama administration said Thursday it will allow states to use their own money to reopen parks. And governors in at least four states have asked for authority to reopen national parks within their borders because of the economic impacts caused by the park closures.

Jeff Zent, a spokesman for Gov. Jack Dalrymple, says Dalrymple has not made a request.  Zent says no money has been set aside to cover the costs.

State Budget Director Pam Sharp says the state has never funded the Theodore Roosevelt National Park in the past.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Gov. Jack Dalrymple has appointed a new chief for the state Information Technology Department.

Mike Ressler has served as deputy chief and director of operations for the department since 1997.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – The University of North Dakota is elevating the level of training for students learning to fly large drones.

The state provided $2.7 million in grants to help finance what’s called the Predator Mission Aircrew Training System, or PMAT.

Students are being trained on smaller simulators in advance of the new course scheduled to begin in January.

The program will teach students to maneuver long-range drones that can fly between 18,000 and 30,000 feet.

UND aviation professor John Bridewell says the course will help fill demand for drone pilots.

UND was the first school nationwide to offer a bachelor’s degree in unmanned aircraft systems when the program started in 2009.

DICKINSON, N.D. (AP) – Dickinson residents are getting their first look at plans for a proposed $100 million events center and arena grounds.

The complex has been dubbed the Badlands Events Center.

The   funding has not been determined.

LAKOTA, N.D. (AP) – A prized duck decoy that went missing in advance of a charity auction has been returned.

The duck was painted with University of North Dakota colors and autographed by several present and past hockey team members, some of whom now play in the NHL.

It was taken from the SunLac’s Sundowner Lounge in Lakota sometime before Tuesday.

The duck will be among more than 80 plastic decoys to will be auctioned Saturday in the Duckfest fundraising event to benefit the public libraries in Lakota and the nearby town of Michigan.

The development foundation will back the project up to $41 million. It still needs approval from the state Board of Higher Education and state Legislature.

School officials say renovation of the Bison Sports Arena will give NDSU “a true Division I athletic complex.”

Sanford Health has given $10 million to the project and the Scheel family $5 million. School officials announced Thursday that Fargo businessman Jim Ingstad and his wife, Victoria, have committed $1.2 million to the project.
