Marvin was born on October 24, 1947, in Valley City, North Dakota, to Allan and Lila (Svenningson) Olson. His educational journey began at Noltimier School, culminating with his graduation from Oriska High School in 1966. Marvin pursued higher education at the North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton, where he earned a degree in Civil Engineering Technology. Shortly after college, he answered the call of duty and was drafted into the Army, serving from 1968 to 1970, a period that shaped his character and instilled a sense of pride in service. In October of 1967, he married Wanda Maier in Valley City, ND. From this marriage they had three children. The family lived in the Twin Cities area of Minnesota, Cider Rapids, Iowa, Coon Rapids, MN, West Fargo, ND and finally residing in Oriska, ND, where all three kids graduated from Oriska High School. His professional career began at Twin City Testing, and he later joined Midwest Testing, where he worked diligently as a civil engineering technician. Marvin was known for his hard work, integrity and honesty. Outside of work, Marvin was a man of many interests. He found joy in woodworking, tirelessly bringing old “junk” back to life through his skills and creativity. Whether it was fixing lawn mowers or refurbishing furniture, he poured his heart into every project. And oh, did he love rummage/auction sales. He loved to watch the birds in his backyard, especially the hummingbirds that came back every year. He always made sure the feeders were full of food so that the birds would keep coming back. Marvin was a proud member of the Eagles Club in Valley City where he knew everyone, and everyone knew him. His family meant a lot to him, and he loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends and everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.
He is survived by his Son Richard (Tina) Olson and Daughter Susan (Tony) Wendel, along with his grandchildren Mariah, Colton, Chloe, Jayden, Tori, Eli, Henry, his great-grandson Jax, Cousin Judy (Olson) PaDelford (who was like a sister to him), and Brother Tom (Eileen) Olson. He also leaves behind many nieces, a nephew and his loyal companion Marvin, affectionately known as “Big Dog.”
Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, Allan and Lila, his sister Marsha, his brothers Jerry and Micheal, his beloved daughter Sarah Jean, and his precious great-granddaughter Hazel Grace along with all his precious dogs and cats.
In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the HIA Hospice, where Marv’s last days were comforted by these earthly angels that took care of him.
