Jt ND (Chamber) – The Jamestown Area Chamber of Commerce recently helped mark the completion of the Pipestem Dam safety modification project with a ribbon cutting at Pipestem Dam north of Jamestown.
The project focused on strengthening the dam’s emergency spillway. That part of the system helps move water safely away from the dam during rare, high-water events. The work does not change how the dam normally operates. It adds protection for the moments when snowmelt, heavy rain, or extreme runoff put more pressure on the system.
The scale of the work was significant. Project leaders said the new spillway and related features used about 150,000 cubic yards of concrete, enough to fill roughly 5,000 truck trailers. That material went into a project built to reduce flood risk for Jamestown and downstream communities for decades to come.
The ribbon cutting recognized the planning, engineering, construction, and public work behind the project. Community members are encouraged to learn more about Pipestem Dam and its role in local flood protection.
