Marlyn C. Legler was born December 31, 1946, to Alfred and Myrtle (Hagseth) Legler. He attended and graduated from College High. Marlyn attended NDSCS where he earned an associate degree in Forestry. In June of 1966 he joined the United States Navy with the rank of Bu3 as a Seabee. He served two terms in Vietnam and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He was honorably discharged in 1969.

In 1970 he married the love of his life Helen Gutting at St. Catherine Church, Valley City. They enjoyed life together for 58 years.

Marlyn was employed with the Pepsi Company, Sears and many years with the Fargo Forum. He retired in 2008.

Marlyn was a member of the Valley City Fire Department for 31 years, long time member of the Eagles Club and the VFW, DAV and Red Knights Motorcycle Club.

He enjoyed woodworking, reading, chauffeuring the family and raising animals on his hobby farm. His greatest joy was spending time with his three grandsons.

Marlyn is survived by his wife Helen, daughter Toni Legler Haglund (Bret), grandchildren Evan, Jamestown, ND, Noah (Madi), Fargo, ND and Bodi Haglund (Samantha Samuelson), Valley City, sister Cory Haugen (Tony)Savage, MN, nieces Nicole Tranby (Ryan), Prior Lake, MN, Erica Barnett (Justin) Georgetown, KY; nephews Chad Hemmer (Tanya), Jamestown, ND, and their children McKenna Chavez (Kiano), San Diego, CA, and Jasmine Hemmer, Bismarck; and nephew Derek Legler (Maddie), Chesterfield, MO and his children Theo, Luke and Bhene; and sister-in-law Jan Legler, Madison, WI.

He was preceded in death by his father, mother, brother Ronnie, sister-in-law and husband Georgie and Mike Hemmer.

The funeral service for Marlyn will be 2 PM on Friday, October 9, 2026, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Valley City. Officiant will be Fire Department Chaplain David Montecullo. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church. Burial with military honors will be at Woodbine Cemetery, Valley City. Refreshments at the church will follow the burial. He passed away September 30, 2026, at Essentia Health, Fargo, ND.
