Douglas (Doug) D. Quick, 94, of Valley City, ND, formerly of Dazey, passed away on October 12, 2026, at SMP Health St. Raphael Care Center, surrounded by his family.

Doug was born April 21, 1932, to Melvin and Gladys (Sad) Quick on a farm near Dazey, ND. He was the fourth of six children. Growing up, Doug always knew he wanted to farm. He much preferred helping his dad in the field instead of attending school. However, after a memorable scolding from one of his teachers, he was persuaded to stay in school and graduated from Dazey High School in 1950. During his school years he enjoyed playing basketball and Legion baseball.

Before he started farming in 1955, Doug worked on the construction of the Garrison Dam, operating a dozer tractor. In 1953, during the Korean War, he and best buddies Ron Tolstad and Jerry Bender decided to enlist in the Army. They figured enlisting together would increase their chances of being stationed together. Shortly after they enlisted, the Korean War ended, and Doug remained stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. He was honorably discharged in March of 1955. As it turned out, the three friends from Dazey did not cross paths again until they had all returned home from military service. For years afterward, they enjoyed teasing one another about whose “bright idea” it had been to enlist together. But they served their Country with honor.

On January 6, 1957, Doug married his high school sweetheart, Violet Weller. Together they began their life farming near Dazey. In later years, they also farmed in Karlstad and Beltrami, MN. Farming and family were at the center of Doug’s life. He was always proud of the many family members who worked alongside him and Vi over the years, including his mom and dad, uncles, brothers, son, daughters, grandsons, nephews, nieces, and cousins. He especially cherished the many family gatherings, which often included relatives by the dozens.

In 1999, Doug and Vi moved to Valley City where they enjoyed their “semi-retirement” years with family and several new-found friends. They loved to go out dancing and playing cards with their close-knit group of friends. When Violet was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, Doug lovingly cared for her at home until her passing in 2020. They shared 63 years of marriage. Into his 90s, Doug continued to run tractor and combine for his son Jim, as it was what he loved to do.

Doug is survived by his daughter Julie and Butch Sizer of Wimbledon; daughter Beth Berge of Dazey; son Jim Quick of Dazey; grandchildren Emily and Tim Schmiedeberg and their children Caleb, Cole and Bella; Eric and Alison Sizer and their triplets Camden, Parker, and Ava; Trevor, Josh, and Dylan Quick; brother Alan Quick; sister-in-law Wendy Quick; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Violet; his parents Melvin and Gladys Quick; siblings Loretta (Francis) Schneider, Jeanette (Harold) Salander, William (Arlene) Quick, and Gary Quick; son-in-law Ron Berge; in-laws Jeanne Quick, Viola Carlson, and Clarence Weller; and parents-in-law Eugene & Helen Weller.

The family extends a special thank you to the staff of Bridgeview Assisted Living, SMP Health St. Raphael Care Center, and Hearts In Action Hospice for the wonderful care they provided to Doug.
The family requests donations be directed to the Dazey Cemetery Fund or a charity of the donor’s choice.
