LeRoy Buck, 96, of Wishek, ND, formally of Streeter, ND, passed away on October 13, 2026, surrounded by family, at the Wishek Community Hospital.
LeRoy was born on September 25, 1930, at Streeter, the son of John and Lydia (Remboldt) Buck. He was one of 10 children. He attended country school until the seventh grade when he was needed on the family farm. As a young man, he was employed as part of the work crew who helped build the Garrison Dam and overpasses along I-94 in ND.
He met Alice Miller on New Year’s Eve in 1950. He decided this gal was “the one.” They were married at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Streeter on July 22, 1951. They were blessed to celebrate their 75th anniversary in 2026.
Early in their marriage, they decided to be adventurous and move to Lodi, CA for work. LeRoy worked as a machinist in a cannery. After many months, they became homesick and decided North Dakota was the place to put down their roots. In 1958, they moved to a farm, ten miles south of Streeter where they continued to raise their family and worked side-by-side milking cows and grain farming. LeRoy took immense pride in his farm. Farming was more than a way of life; it was part of who he was. He enjoyed fixing broken things or tinkering with his International tractor collection. He was always willing to help any neighbor in need. They remained on the farm until 2019, when they moved into Streeter. In December 2025, they relocated to Wishek.
He leaves behind a legacy that cannot be measured in years alone. Together, LeRoy and Alice raised five daughters: Pam (Robert) Johnson, Robin (Vaughn) Dewald, Shirli (Mickey) Nenow, LoLita (Barry) Dutton, and Tanya (Todd) Schnabel. Being a father of five girls certainly kept him on his toes, but he never complained. Later in life, he was always proud to tell anyone, “These are my daughters. I had five girls and no boys.” But he always smiled and said, “but now the boys will come.” LeRoy and Alice were blessed with 14 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and 19 great-great-grandchildren. You could always find him with a little one on his lap.
LeRoy liked a competitive game of pinochle, listening to Polka Party, raiding the cookie jar, or enjoying a hot cup of coffee or a can of root beer. He loved spending time with family and friends, and visiting with people. He cherished his nephews, nieces, and cousins, as well as, the community of Streeter and the surrounding communities. Anywhere LeRoy and Alice went, they knew someone or they met someone and that new person would become their friend for life. If you came for a visit, you were always made to feel welcome and loved.
LeRoy was a faithful member of the Hope Ebenezer Church in Streeter. He enjoyed attending church services and the time spent with friends there.
LeRoy is preceded in death by his parents, one brother, 6 sisters and a great-grandson. He will be deeply missed and forever loved by his family.
A special thank you to the Wishek Community Hospital and the Wishek Living Center for the outstanding care they always provided. The staff always made him feel like family.
