BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota Republican U.S. Senate
candidate Rick Berg got a few moments in the spotlight at the
Republican National Convention on Tuesday.

The Republican congressman spoke for two minutes about North
Dakota’s low unemployment, job growth and state budget surplus.

He says North Dakota provides a contrast to the sluggish national
economy.
Berg says North Dakota doesn’t “burden our job creators with
red tape” and that people “trust the individual, not big
government.”
Berg is running against former Democratic Attorney General Heidi
Heitkamp for the Senate seat now held by retiring Democrat Kent
Conrad.
Heitkamp said afterward that Berg’s speech didn’t mention his
failure to get new farm legislation approved in the House.

She says the lack of a farm bill is causing uncertainty among North Dakota’s
farmers and ranchers.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – A Tokio man has been sentenced to six
months in federal prison for abusing a 2-year-old boy on the Spirit
Lake Reservation.
Twenty-nine-year-old Allen Demarce Sr. pleaded guilty in June to
striking the child with an open hand, resulting in injuries to the
boy’s face, arms and back.

The incident happened in March 2011 on the reservation, where officials have been criticized for alleged lapses in child protection efforts.

U.S. Attorney Timothy Purdon says Demarce will be on supervised
release for three years following his prison term.

He must serve the first six months of that time at a halfway house.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A federal magistrate says North Dakota’s
Public Service Commission has the right to participate in a lawsuit
that challenges its authority to regulate coal mining.
The lawsuit was filed by two North Dakota environmental groups
against U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar.
The groups want Salazar to take away the state agency’s
authority to regulate coal mining and land reclamation in North
Dakota.

They say the move is justified because Commissioners Kevin
Cramer and Brian Kalk have taken campaign contributions from the
coal industry.

Magistrate Charles Miller Jr. says federal law gives the
commission the right to participate in the lawsuit.
Cramer says Tuesday the decision is a victory for state
regulatory authority.
The environmental groups say taxpayers are having to defend
Cramer and Kalk’s acceptance of coal industry campaign donations.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A fast food restaurant worker in Fargo is
credited with rescuing a man from a burning car.

A person who came through the drive-thru at the Hardee’s
restaurant early Monday alerted 33-year-old Tim Koester that smoke
was coming from a car in the parking lot.
Koester says he unbuckled the man inside the vehicle, who appeared to be drunk and passed out.

Koester says after he pulled the man out of the car the gas tank exploded.
The 50-year-old man inside the car was arrested on suspicion of
drunken driving.

Fire officials say the blaze started in the trunk of the car and was ruled unintentional. The car was destroyed.

FORT TOTTEN, N.D. (AP) – Federal officials plan to return to the Spirit Lake reservation in North Dakota next month to check on progress resolving problems with the tribe’s child protection programs.

U.S. Sen. John Hoeven says the Bureau of Indian Affairs will decide after that review whether to take over control of the social services program from the tribe.

The member of the Senate’s Indian Affairs Committee also plans to travel to the reservation next week to get a firsthand look at the situation.

The tribe has been criticized for alleged lapses in protecting endangered children.

Federal officials have accused tribal officials of repeatedly ignoring reports of child abuse and neglect.

Interior Department officials were at the reservation Monday to meet with tribal officials.

Tribal Chairman Roger Yankton says most problems predate his administration.

CHICAGO, (AP)  —  United Airlines Tuesday afternoon was  having major computer problems that are affecting its operations at airports, and its website.

main website, United.com, is down.
United flights to its hub in Newark, N.J., are being held at
their origin until 6 p.m. Eastern. Flights to United’s San
Francisco hub are also being held at their destination.
The airline says it is trying to minimize any impact to its

United personnel.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) – Republicans have nominated former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney for president, culminating a long primary fight and setting the stage for a close contest against President Barack Obama.

In a roll call of states Tuesday, New Jersey put Romney over the top, giving him the prize that eluded him four years ago. Romney is scheduled to accept his party’s nomination in a speech Thursday night.

Republican voters flirted with a carousel of GOP rivals before settling on Romney, who effectively clinched the nomination in May. All of Romney’s former GOP competitors have endorsed him, with the exception of Texas Rep. Ron Paul.

Paul did not have enough support to have his name placed in nomination, but he got votes in roll call.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) – The mood is calm in New Orleans as the first
rain bands and wind gusts from Hurricane Isaac come ashore.

It’s one of the first tests for the stronger levee system that was put
in place after Hurricane Katrina, which arrived seven years ago
tomorrow.

Isaac is still a minimal hurricane — unlike Katrina, which packed winds of 135 miles an hour.

PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) – Coast Guard crews are searching for a man
who disappeared Monday while jet skiing off the coast of
Pensacola, Fla., in storm-churned waters.

The Coast Guard says three helicopters and a plane have been searching for the man.

A Coast Guard spokesman says crews will temporarily suspend their
search when wind and rain conditions from Hurricane Isaac make it
too difficult for them to continue.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) – Republicans are getting ready to present Mitt
Romney to the nation as a man who understands everyday Americans
and as a leader who can fix the economy.

And in a keynote address, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie will make the case
that Romney is the right leader to get the economy moving.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Under regulations finalized today by the Obama
administration, the average gas mileage of new cars and trucks will
have to nearly double by 2025.

The new rules would require the fleet of new cars and trucks to average 54.5 miles per gallon in 13 years, up from 28.6 mpg at the end of last year.

Mitt Romney has opposed the standards.

His campaign Tuesday called them extreme and said they would drive up the price of new cars, wiping out the savings at the pump.

AURORA, Colo. (AP) – Families of some of the 12 people killed in
the Colorado theater shooting are upset with the way the millions
of dollars raised since the tragedy are being distributed.

They held an emotional news conference Tuesday in Aurora.

Tom Teves (TEH’-vehs), whose son was killed, criticized fundraisers for not
giving victims a voice in how the money is distributed.

So far, just over $5 million has been raised with $5,000 each going to the
families of 70 victims to meet their immediate financial needs.
However, $100,000 has gone to 10 nonprofit groups.
